- World leaders are welcoming news of a deal between the United States and Iran, but key details of the agreement remain unreleased — and questions linger over how quickly global energy markets could return to normal.
Trump has long said the United States' goal was to ensure Iran would never obtain a nuclear weapon. According to Iranian state media, a 14-point memorandum of understanding includes the release of seized Iranian assets, the reconstruction of Iran, and an Iranian commitment not to pursue a nuclear weapon. Those details have not yet been confirmed.
But questions also remain over whether Israel will abide by the terms of the deal. Israeli officials said early Monday they will not remove troops from seized portions of Lebanon.
And the future of the Strait of Hormuz remains the biggest open question. A return to global shipping is expected to have a dramatic impact on energy prices, but it is unclear how long a full recovery will take, a...

A federal judge on Friday refused to block a scheduled UFC event at the White House.
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta denied a request for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction that sought to halt UFC Freedom 250, an event planned for the South Lawn on Sunday.
The lawsuit argued the event would improperly commercialize public spaces, damage historic landmarks and create aesthetic harms for visitors. Plaintiffs also contended the administration should have obtained congressional approval before constructing a massive stage structure on White House grounds.
It’s a short walk from the White House to the Donald J. Trump and Jeffrey Epstein Memorial Reading Room, but it’s still a long way for the accountability survivors are seeking.

“We're not quite at the finish line yet, but we are very close,” said a senior administration official, who noted they “feel good about where we are.”
While the administration expects to sign an agreement over the next few days, a senior administration official said the confidence level is around 80-85 percent. They acknowledged some Iranian hardliners “want to kill the deal” but that they believe “dissent is quite minimal.”
“Their system is very complicated. Most of the people that we've been speaking to, and most of the people who have authority wi...

- A key surveillance tool that allows the United States to collect intelligence abroad appears certain to expire after the House on Thursday failed to temporarily extend the program, in a protest of President Donald Trump 's temporary pick to head the nation's intelligence agencies.
Trump has doubled down on his choice of Bill Pulte for acting director of national intelligence, even though the federal housing finance regulator has little experience for the job. Democrats say they will not support the renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, known as FISA, unless the Republican president withdraws Pulte's appointment and nominates a permanent replacement.
The House vote collapsed in bipartisan fashion, with some 20 Republicans and nearly all Democrats rejecting the temporary measure, 198-218. The Senate may try its own vote later Thursday, but hopes are dimming to prevent what could be rare lapse of spy powers. The law expires on Frida...

- Description
- For months, Americans have been watching prices go up, and families have been struggling to make ends meet. New economic numbers out Thursday indicate lower prices are likely not around the corner.
The producer price index — which captures inflation before it reaches consumers — went up 1.1% in May, and it’s up 6.5% compared to May 2025. That’s the highest year-over-year change since November 2022.
A report Wednesday put consumer inflation at 4.2%, so Thursday’s new data shows producers, or wholesalers, are paying higher inflation than individual customers. That means Americans can probably expect prices to keep going up.
“It's entirely reasonable to think that with wholesale prices rising further and more, that that has to be passed along at least to some degree to consumers. They can eat some of the price increase at the retail level, but that remains to be seen,” explained Mark Hamrick, a senior economic analyst at Bankrate....

Gonzalez, an immigrant originally from Cuba who had been living in North Carolina, was hanging from a bed sheet at the Stewart Detention Center after apparently attempting suicide.
After staff at the jail brought him down to the floor, a nurse determined Gonzalez, 33, had “a thready pulse and shallow respirations,” an ICE report noted.
An employee at the detention center called 911 to request an ambulance, but it would take more than half an hour for one to arrive.
Federal detention regulations require detainees have “timely access” to emergency care outside a detention center, but a Scripps News investigation found the isolated location of the Stewart Detention Center often means it can take a while to get immigrants to a hospital for the urgent medical help they need.

But mortgage rates and tight inventory continue to make homeownership a challenge for many families. - Tens of millions of tax dollars wasted, and safety put at risk: that’s how a new federal audit describes the nation’s largest immigration detention center.
Last fall Scripps News exposed health and safety problems at a huge ICE detention site in Texas.
Now a new government report details never before disclosed examples of waste and safety concerns at Camp East Montana.
ICE cut corners rushing to stand up the camp in El Paso, Texas, according to federal auditors.
“The facility opened without meeting key detention standards,” their report finds, outlining “Serious risks to the safety and security of both detained noncitizens and staff.”
Three detainees have died.
Scripps News was on the ground at Camp East Montana in fall, and first to report Gerardo Lunas Campos dead after what ICE called a “spontaneous use of force” by guards. Now the report reveals evidence in the ca...

- Sell off for AI stocks drags Wall Street to first back to back drop in weeks

- Description
- Another sell-off for artificial-intelligence stocks dragged the U.S. market sharply lower.
The S&P 500 dropped 1.6% Wednesday after giving up a brief modest gain in the morning. The index had its first back-to-back drop in three weeks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average sank 1.9%, and the Nasdaq composite lost 2%.
Wall Street has been shaky since last week, when AI stocks went from roaring to records to suddenly turning lower. Among the worries is that their prices have simply shot too high, too fast. Oil prices rose after President Donald Trump threatened more strikes on Iran.
Super Micro Computer, which sells AI servers, tumbled 23.1% after saying late Tuesday that it plans to raise $7 billion in cash by selling shares of stock and convertible preferred stock. Such moves raise the most money for companies when their stock prices are high, and they can dilute the ownership stakes of existing shareholders.
Micron Technology went from an...

- Inflation surges to 4.2% as Iran war puts pressure on prices

- Description
- Consumers are paying significantly more for goods and services, as new government data shows prices climbed 4.2% in the 12 months ending in May. The price of goods and services within the month of May jumped 0.5%.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, inflation rose at its fastest annual pace since April 2023, driven largely by oil and energy prices, which surged after the United States launched an attack on Iran.
The consumer price index has spiked notably in recent months. In February, annual inflation stood at 2.4%, closer to the Federal Reserve’s target of 2%. The Fed had projected a quarter-point rate cut this year, but it typically raises rates during periods of high inflation.
With inflation more than double the Fed’s target and job growth remaining strong, hopes for interest rate cuts have faded. The central bank could opt to raise rates at its meeting next week.
The consumer price index weighs the cost of goods an...

- A burning cross has sparked an investigation in Chicago’s Grant Park
A motorist’s video shows the wooden cross, which police called an "object," engulfed in flames against a tree near Lake Michigan. Police are probing how it got there and why.
Keinika Carlton, 43, was driving home from running errands with her daughter and mother-in-law when they saw the cross on fire. She said she felt a combination of shock, sadness, disgust, and curiosity.
“Is this a racial thing? Is this a religious thing?" she said. “As Black women, of course, our first thought is racial, because burning crosses are known to be used as a tactic, an act of violence toward Black Americans in the South.”
