- At least 39 people have died in a high-speed train collision in southern Spain, Spanish police said.
The crash occurred when the tail end of a train carrying some 300 passengers from Malaga to Madrid, went off the rails at 7.45pm local time (6.45pm GMT) on Sunday, January 18.

- A white barn owl has escaped from its home in Huyton and its owner is hoping someone in Merseyside has seen him.
Soren, the one-year-old owl, managed to break free from his aviary in Wiktoria Bartnik's garden on Saturday, January 17, at around 8.15pm and has not been seen since.
He is a captive bird and is not used to being in the wild and there's a chance he could be hiding due to the rain.
The worried 22-year-old says she just wants her pet home as soon as possible and is asking for anyone who has any sightings of him to get in touch immediately.

Three areas of Merseyside have been announced as hosts for the global sporting event Tour de France in the summer of 2027.
To celebrate the announcement, all start and finish venues were lit up simultaneously on the evening of Thursday 15, with a yellow beam illuminating the sky from the city's Three Graces, St George's Dock building and the Mersey Tunnels

- Tributes were left on the one-year anniversary of the death of a much-loved toddler at a nursery. A year has passed since "smiley" Jude Gerrard tragically lost his life following what was described as a medical episode. On the morning of January 14, 2025, two-year-old Jude had gone to Early Learners Day Nursery on Hawthorne Road in Bootle like "any normal day", anticipating it to be "full of fun and adventure." Instead, it ended "catastrophically" with Jude losing his "young, vibrant and treasured life".
