- Industry must produce and innovate more, faster. This is how we keep our defence strong and our people safe.
🗣 | NATO Secretary General
On Thursday (12 March 2026), NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte attended the Brussels European Defense Exhibition (BEDEX). He praised the crucial role of the defence industry for continued security across Europe and North America.
Speaking at the BEDEX opening ceremony, Mr. Rutte told industry representatives, “The men and women in uniform are crucial but without the equipment they cannot fight, and our adversaries know that, so they need to know that we have a strong defence industrial base.” He also explained the importance of increased defence spending in a more dangerous world, stating, “NATO Allies are committed to investing 5% of their GDP on defence by 2035 because this is about our security, and about our freedom and our prosperity.” The Secretary General toured the exhibition with the Pri...

TCG Anadolu is the flagship of the Turkish Navy and one of the largest warships operated by a NATO Ally. Originally designed as an amphibious assault ship, it has been adapted to operate Baykar Bayraktar TB3 armed drones from its flight deck — making it the first ship in the Alliance configured to deploy fixed-wing armed drones at sea in this way.
During NATO exercise Steadfast Dart 26, the ship deployed as part of the Allied Reaction Force, showcasing how NATO navies are combining traditional amphibious power with unmanned strike and reconnaissance capabilities to sharpen the Alliance’s technological edge.

That’s why Desiree Mumm, an Estonian video producer, put on a Kevlar helmet and flack jacket to embed with the UK-led multinational battlegroup during exercise Hedgehog 25. - Description
- In Lapland, northern Finland, where temperatures regularly drop below -20 degrees Celsius, instructors from the Finnish Defence Forces’ Jaeger Brigade regularly run different winter warfare courses for military personnel from various NATO member countries.
Being able to face extreme weather conditions is a crucial skill to have for NATO troops, particularly in a cold weather environment. Training helps soldiers who have never had the chance to endure such harsh conditions to get acquainted with the environment, understand and overcome the challenges it poses, and get familiar with it, so they can enhance their ability to defend the Alliance’s territory in all climate conditions, should the need arise.
These courses range from basic survival skills to more advanced scenarios. Here, a group of Allied soldiers coming from France, the United Kingdom and the United States test their mettle as they face Arctic conditions for the first time in the vast, freezing ...

- Description
- At a training camp in south-east Poland, Ukrainian troops are learning how to fight and survive on the battlefield under the instruction of NATO Allies.
Camp Jomsborg was established in 2025 as part of Operation Legio, a multinational effort led by Norway to train, equip and fund Ukraine’s armed forces. Named after a mythical Viking fortress, the facility was set up by the Norwegian Army with support from several NATO Allies, including Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, and is designed to give Ukrainian troops the battlefield skills they need to operate effectively.
Ukrainian soldiers who arrive at Jomsborg have varying levels of skills and experience. Some are hardened combat veterans looking to learn advanced tactics from the Legio instructors; others are combat support troops like logistics soldiers, or artillery personnel who need infantry combat skills to survive on a dynamic and unpredictable battlefield. - Protecting the Alliance is no small feat – and a job that requires thousands of troops, assets, skills and expertise from across the Alliance, which all together contribute to keeping our people safe. Part of this feat is taken on by the biggest bomber planes in NATO’s arsenal – the B52s – which are keeping watch over Europe from an airbase in the United Kingdom.
These massive planes from the US Air Force are stationed at RAF Fairford airbase as part of Bomber Task Force Europe, a mission that sees them deployed to Europe on a rotational basis. These bombers are slower and less manoeuvrable than NATO’s strike fighters, but they carry the kind of firepower that can deter would-be aggressors through sheer presence alone.
During their deployment, the bomber crews learn how to fly through European airspace and work more effectively with Allied forces, both in the air and on the ground. Plus, for crew members who have never been to Europe before, the trai...

- Ramping up defence production is a top priority for NATO to keep our one billion people safe.
Over the last decade, NATO Allies have increased their defence spending and production, ramping up their stocks of weapons and ammunition. But we are still spending far less than during the Cold War, even though the threats to our freedom and security now are just as big, if not bigger.
While Russia’s arms industry is booming, our defence industry is still too small and too slow to meet the needs of the future. Now is the time to spend more, to accelerate the production lines and increase investments in innovation and in more modern capabilities.
As the war in Ukraine is on our doorstep and hostile actions against Allied countries are taking place, the best way to keep our people safe is to invest more, better and faster together across the transatlantic defence industry.

With artillery, heavy armour, reconnaissance troops and mechanised infantry, these forces are a potent deterrent to aggression – but in the event of a crisis, they can also absorb thousands more troops and grow in size to a brigade.

- Description
- Following Russia’s reckless and dangerous violations of NATO airspace, NATO launched Eastern Sentry – a multi-domain activity that will strengthen our defences even further.
This military activity adds additional assets from Allies and better connects those already available all along the Alliance’s eastern flank. It adds flexibility, strength and responsiveness.
NATO is a defensive alliance and we always stand ready to defend
every inch of NATO territory.
