Four years after 21 young people died inside the tavern in Scenery Park, families are hoping the court's findings will finally provide answers to the mysterious deaths and whether anyone should be held criminally responsible. The inquest has heard months of evidence from survivors, forensic experts, investigators, and tavern manager Siyakhangela Ndevu, who has consistently denied responsibility for the tragedy. - The Madlanga commission has heard from a World Bank anti-corruption expert about how the current system for financial disclosures needs an entire overhaul.
Dr Albertus Schoeman outlined a report that he compiled for the purposes of the inquiry to assist with dealing with the gaps within the current framework for declaring assets and other streams of income.
One of the key revelations is that the system currently relies on the person being investigated to volunteer information about their financial standing and auditors have no powers to use other sources to verify the lifestyle of officials.
