- A raft of rules for new drivers in Northern Ireland is aimed at making the roads safer.
The Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme, which came into force on Thursday, introduces a revised training, testing and post-test framework for new drivers and motorcycle riders.
It was developed in partnership with the emergency services, other departments and agencies to reduce the disproportionate involvement of new, primarily young, drivers in fatal and serious road accidents.

The trophy was presented at a ceremony in Birmingham on September 7 by Entrepreneurs Circle, a mobilisation group for small and medium enterprises across the UK.
It’s the first time a business owner from Northern Ireland has won, and Diane Koplewsky said she felt “incredibly proud to have brought it home”.

- A man who spent two years living without electricity is among the tenants of Rathlin Island’s first social housing development in more than a decade.
Ruari Morgan moved to Rathlin 15 years ago, settling into a centuries-old stone-built cottage on the island.
Now, he is one of the first tenants in the 10 new homes on Church Bay, developed by Rural Housing Association.
Ruari has deep family ties to the island, his father was born on Rathlin and his mother was raised there.
But for the past two years, he had been living in the ageing, off-grid cottage without electricity or central heating after a fire damaged its generator.
