- CPJ condemns Israel’s detention of Al Jazeera’s correspondent Ismail al-Ghoul
- Date posted
- Description
- The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has condemned the detention of Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent Ismail al-Ghoul and his team by the Israeli army at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza.
“Journalists play an essential role in a war. They are the eyes and the ears that we need to document what’s happening and with every journalist killed, with every journalist arrested, our ability to understand what’s happening in Gaza diminishes significantly,” Jodie Ginsberg, chief executive officer of the CPJ, told Al Jazeera.
“This is the worst conflict for journalists that the Committee to Protect Journalists has ever documented, and the situation is simply getting worse.”
She added that the attacks on media vehicles and equipment at al-Shifa Hospital “looks like a deliberate attempt to prevent [the] assault on the hospital being documented” and that “there is a history of Israel targeting media facilities”.

- Why evangelical Christians influence US foreign policy in the Middle East | Witness Documentary
- Date posted
- Description
- Episode 1 of Praying for Armageddon goes inside the evangelical Christian movement to explore its influence on U.S. democracy and foreign policy. Preparing for 'end times', a grassroots pastor gathers an army of veterans in the heartland of the U.S., and megachurch ministers provide spiritual advice to politicians in the nation’s capital. They call for the ‘final battle’ which they believe will trigger the second coming of Christ. Central to their apocalyptic prophecy is Israel. It is with their blessing that the Trump administration controversially recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moves the U.S. embassy there in 2018. “It feels like everyone has a say about the destiny and the future of Jerusalem except for the Palestinians living in it,” says Palestinian Fayrouz Sharqawi.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon thermal spa, one of Iceland’s top tourist attractions, when the eruption began, national broadcaster RUV said.

- Professor Jeffrey Sachs: ‘US is complicit in Israeli genocide’ | The Bottom Line
- Date posted
- Description
- “Does the United States want to be complicit in genocide?” This is the question that US leaders should be asking themselves as Israel’s war on Gaza continues, argues Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs.
Sachs tells host Steve Clemons that Israel could not continue “for one day” without US support, and the rhetoric from top Democrats criticising Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is “meaningless” because no action is taken to stop the war crimes.
This has led to US isolation on the world stage, as Israel is allowed to continue “whatever they have in their minds… which will never lead to peace”.

- Netanyahu does not want to appear as the person giving concessions to Hamas: Analyst
- Date posted
- Description
- Since the news leaked about what Hamas has suggested on Friday afternoon, reports emerged from Israel that there will be a cabinet meeting on Saturday evening.
But on Saturday evening, news came that the meeting will be postponed to Sunday or Monday. At the same time, War Minister Yoav Gallant has called for a meeting with his security leadership.
Mahjoob Zweiri, the director of the Gulf Studies Center at Qatar University, considers the meeting to be significant as it sends a message to Netanyahu that there are alternative voices within Israel that deserve attention. These voices, Zweiri believes, are the ones addressing real issues.
He notes that Gantz has already stated that the government should exhibit flexibility or propose ideas to address Hamas's proposal. Additionally, Zweiri mentions another politician, Gideon Saar, who seeks inclusion in the war cabinet and has criticized the government for lacking clear direction.

- For the first time in months, a trickle of aid has arrived in northern Gaza without incident.
13 trucks delivered supplies including flour, to Jabalia and Gaza City.
Volunteers and community leaders co-ordinated with the UN to secure the entry of the convoy.

A growing number of Palestinians are dying of hunger in the north, where the UN says famine is taking hold.
In northern Gaza, one in three children under the age of two is acutely malnourished - that's according to the UN.
Some food parcels have been airdropped.
But it's nowhere near enough to meet the needs of millions of Palestinians.
Al Jazeera’s Michael Appel reports.
Federico Dessi is the Middle East Director at the aid group 'Humanity and Inclusion'.
He explains how aid delivery to Gaza could be increased.
