Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday to federal stalking charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
In court, Mangione read a statement laying out the motive for the crime, saying he had suffered from severe back pain for years after breaking his back and had heard about others dealing with similar issues. He said that prompted him to research UnitedHealth Group's investor conference and pose as an investor so he could attend.
Mangione also appeared to take a dig at UnitedHealthcare, saying he received an invitation to the conference within an hour of reaching out about attending as an investor. He appeared to contrast that quick response with complaints from some patients about their experiences with the company.

The U.S. has no formal jurisdiction over the strait. The president did not share more details about the claim.
President Trump maintains that the U.S. controls the waterway and is winning against Iran, while the Iranians maintain that they are managing the strait and demand the lifting of the U.S.' blockade in order to open it.
Iranian officials responded on Friday, saying the strait was and would remain under Iranian control.

She had jumped from a second-story window, and she remains paralyzed from the waist down.
Prosecutors argue that the former labor and delivery nurse was an intentional killer who contrived to get her husband out of the house and then strangled the children with exercise bands on Jan. 24, 2023.
Prosecutor Shanan Buckingham has urged jurors not to view the trial as “a public debate about women’s mental health and how the medical system treats women.”

According to a new rule proposed this week, food manufacturers would be required to notify the FDA when they have included a substance in human or animal food that the manufacturer has deemed to be safe, also known as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe).
The proposed rule, which will be open for public comments and debate through early December, will bring “greater transparency and oversight to substances added to the nation’s food supply,” according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

- Millions across the Northern hemisphere had a front row seat to a total solar eclipse Wednesday. For a few breathtaking minutes, the moon passed directly between the Earth and sun, casting a shadow across the planet.
Most European cities saw at least 90% of a total eclipse. Some on the U.S. East Coast experienced a partial eclipse.
The next eclipse to cross the U.S. won't occur until 2044.
ICE says it plans to buy electrical shock gloves for its agents, spending millions of dollars to do so.
The devices are called generated low output voltage emitters. Homeland Security estimates the total cost will be between 10 and 20 million dollars.
The gloves are marketed as de-escalation devices and are already in use in some U.S. jails. Opponents say the devices are a way of inflicting pain on immigrant communities.
