- Description
- Cocaine, cannabis, laughing gas and prescription pills are being offered for sale in mini-marts on UK High Streets, a BBC investigation has revealed.
They were readily offered to our undercover researchers who secretly filmed in shops across four neighbouring West Midlands towns.
Across the country, shopfronts are being exploited by organised criminal gangs that have gained a foothold pushing illegal drugs, say both the National Crime Agency and the Chartered Trading Standards Institute.
Responding to the BBC’s findings in the West Midlands and more widely, a senior Labour MP is now calling on the government to act urgently.

- US says no time frame for ending war, as Iran says reopening strait 'not possible' | BBC News

- Description
- Iran has attacked three ships in the Strait of Hormuz and seized two, days after vowing retaliation for the US intercepting an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf as part of its naval blockade.
On Sunday, US President Donald Trump said the ship, Touska, was seized by the US Navy after failing to respond to warnings to stop.
Iran said this was a violation of the ceasefire and it would retaliate soon for the "act of armed piracy".
On Wednesday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said it was "monitoring" movements through the Strait of Hormuz and has pledged "firm" action against the "violators".

- Iran attacks three cargo vessels in Strait of Hormuz | BBC News
- Date posted
- Description
- Iran's top negotiator has said it is "not possible to reopen the Strait of Hormuz" due to "blatant violations" of the US-Iran ceasefire.
Those "violations" include the US naval blockade of Iranian ports and "warmongering" by Israel "on all fronts", Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said.
It follows an Iranian attack on three cargo ships in the strait earlier on Wednesday - two of which were seized for "inspection" by the IRGC Navy.
US President Trump was quoted earlier in US media saying it's "possible" that talks with Iran could resume by Friday.
Talks between the US and Iran were due to resume in Pakistan this week, but are yet to start.
The BBC's chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet is reporting from Tehran on condition that none of her material is used on the BBC's Persian Service. These restrictions apply to all international media organisations operating in Iran.

- Why Donald Trump is refunding $160 billion | Global News Podcast
- Date posted
- Description
- The Trump administration has begun processing refunds for billions of dollars in tariffs that the US Supreme Court struck down in February. In what is set to be the biggest repayment programme in US history, companies can apply online for money they were charged under the so-called "Liberation Day" tariffs - plus interest - to be returned.
Following a Supreme Court ruling, the US Court of International Trade in March ordered customs officials to refund more than $160 billion the government had collected, putting roughly 330,000 importers in a position to potentially win back some money. But individual consumers, who were hit by the tariffs indirectly through higher prices, are not expected to be compensated.
President Trump has said it would be "brilliant" if companies do not seek a refund, adding that he will "remember" those who don't. At the time of the Supreme Court ruling, he said he was "ashamed" of certain justices "for not having the courage to do what...

- EU approves €90bn loan for Ukraine | BBC News
- Date posted
- Description
- Ukraine says it has resumed pumping Russian oil through a pipeline into Hungary and Slovakia, bringing to an end months of deadlock over a €90bn (£78bn) loan seen as vital European Union support for Kyiv.
Soon afterwards, EU ambassadors meeting in Brussels gave preliminary approval to the loan, as well as a 20th package of sanctions on Russia, officials said.
It is now expected to be signed off on Thursday.
Although the funding was agreed last December, Hungary's Viktor Orbán slapped a veto on the payment in February after Ukraine said damage caused by a Russian attack had brought supplies to a halt.
Ukrainian oil and government sources told officials in Hungary and Slovakia that pumping had restarted, hours after the EU ambassadors began discussing the loan.
Orbán had demanded the oil start flowing again before the loan could be paid out, and Ukraine confirmed the repairs had been completed on Tuesday.

- Live debate: Banning social media for teenagers - what do you think? | BBC News
- Date posted

- Description
- Governments around the world are wrestling with how to keep young people safe online.
In the UK, an outright ban on social media for under-16s is being considered - similar to the policy introduced in Australia at the beginning of the year.
At 4.30pm on Wednesday 22 April, BBC News is hosting a special live programme with 30 young people, aged between 12 and 18 years old to hear what they think about a possible ban.
The teenagers from Greater Manchester will speak directly about how the proposed ban could impact their lives, education, friendships, and online identity.
Co-hosted by BBC News' Pria Rai, De-Graft Mensah, and Kirsty Grant, everything will be discussed from doom scrolling to disinformation, creativity to community, and they will hear from not only the young people in the room but also those joining the stream.

- In 2024, reports emerged of a highly sophisticated cyber espionage campaign against US telecoms companies, which some analysts believe went all the way up to the Chinese government.
The group behind this campaign would later be codenamed Salt Typhoon, and it is believed to have quietly infiltrated critical US telecoms infrastructure in order to collect private information on influential Americans – including Donald Trump.
In the process, it may have also swept up data from millions of ordinary Americans. The Chinese government has denied responsibility for Salt Typhoon.
We speak to former Deputy National Security Adviser Anne Neuberger, who was working inside the White House for Joe Biden when the attacks were first uncovered.
We also speak to BBC cyber correspondent Joe Tidy about how this hack unfolded – and what it reveals about who may be winning the cyber war.

- Phone tracking shows how Colombian mercenaries backed Sudan’s RSF, report says | BBC News

- A network of Colombian mercenaries backed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) provided critical support to Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) enabling it to capture the western city of el-Fasher last year, a new report said.
The investigation, by security analysis organisation the Conflict Insights Group (CIG), used data obtained from tracking the mobile phones of the Colombian fighters.
The UAE has long denied supporting the RSF, which has been fighting Sudan's regular army for three years.
El-Fasher's fall was one of the most brutal chapters of the conflict, which has led to the world's worst humanitarian crisis with tens of thousands killed and millions forced from their homes.

- Date posted

- Donald Trump has said he will extend the ceasefire with Iran, which was due to end shortly, until talks between the two countries have progressed. The US President said the naval blockade of Iran’s ports would continue.
Mr Trump said he was agreeing to the ceasefire extension at the the request of Pakistan, which has been mediating between the US and Iran. He wrote on social media: "Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so ... we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.".
The ceasefire extension followed suggestions that the US and Iran would resume peace talks in Pakistan shortly. However the status of those talks remains unclear.

- Is UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's time up over Mandelson mess? | Global News Podcast
- Date posted

- Description
- The UK prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, is under intense scrutiny over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the US, in 2024. Lord Mandelson - a veteran member of the Labour party - was dismissed after less than a year in the job, over his ties to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Lord Mandelson has denied any wrongdoing.
On Monday, Keir Starmer was heckled by members of parliament, as he accused officials in the Foreign Office of deliberately withholding the fact that Lord Mandelson had initially failed his security vetting. On Tuesday, Sir Olly Robbins - who was sacked as the top senior civil servant at the Foreign Office last week - said his department faced "constant pressure" from the prime minister's office, to formally approve Mandelson's appointment.
Opposition figures, including the Conservative party leader Kemi Badenoch, have called for Prime Minister Starmer to resign.

When it gets royal assent, ministers will also have new powers to regulate tobacco, vaping and nicotine products, including their flavours and packaging.
It is part of a series of measures aimed at tackling the health effects of smoking, one of the UK's leading causes of preventable death, disability and ill health.
