- Description
- Members of the European Parliament discuss the European Citizens’ Initiative “Stop Destroying Videogames”, which calls for video games sold or licensed to consumers in the EU to remain in a functional, playable state when publishers decide to discontinue them.
The initiative focuses on cases where games or related features can be remotely disabled, leaving consumers unable to play something they paid for. It asks for reasonable means to keep discontinued games playable without requiring publishers to keep providing ongoing support, resources, ownership rights, intellectual property rights or monetisation rights.
The debate looks at what this could mean for consumers, game preservation, digital ownership and the responsibilities of video game publishers in the EU. The initiative was registered by the European Commission in 2024, and organisers presented its objectives to the Commission in February 2026.

MEPs want EU member states to ensure the equal participation of men and women across all forms of care. They note that access to care is a fundamental right and, given the current demographic trends in Europe, it requires sustainable funding and a person-centred, rights-based approach.
The Parliament's recommendations want to make sure informal carers are covered in pension schemes and social security systems. Awareness campaigns should challenge traditional gender stereotypes and encourage men to take up an equal share of caregiving.
Background
The work involved in providing care is often invisible and largely carried out by women: 56% of women with children under 12 spend at least five hours per day on childcare, compared to 26% of men, according to the European Institute for Gender Equality.

- As online abuse continues to rise - especially among young people - MEPs are calling for clearer, unified criminal laws and stronger accountability for digital platforms.
Cyberbullying can have devastating consequences, including long-term psychological harm and, in extreme cases, loss of life. While the European Commission’s February 2026 Action Plan notes progress in prevention, victim support and enforcement under the Digital Services Act (DSA), concerns remain that it does not go far enough.
National laws such as Ireland’s “Coco’s Law” show how targeted criminal provisions can tackle serious online abuse, including the non-consensual sharing of intimate images. However, legal fragmentation across EU countries continues to create unequal protection for victims and uncertainty for enforcement authorities.

Sexual violence in the EU in 2023 (Eurostat):
