At least one family in this area — a father, mother and two children — were injured when the tornado touched down and had to be rushed to the hospital by a storm chaser.
"It got massive quick and I could tell it was moving our way and that's when I decided to get in the closet, wife and kids were already in the closet," tornado survivor Wes Lambert said.
Aerial footage shows 18-wheelers and trailers overturned in fields near the site of impact, and structures, including homes, completely leveled.

Commissioner Marie-Josée Hogue also concluded that foreign interference did undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

- Description
- Moscow rung in the May Day holiday this Wednesday by inviting locals to the opening of an exhibit that features Western tanks and military hardware captured in Ukraine by the Russian army during the countries’ ongoing war.
The showcase, known as ‘Trophies of the Russian Army,’ is being held outside of a museum that celebrates the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945. According to a statement by the Russian Defence Ministry, it is intended to reassure the Russian population that Western aid will not help Ukraine win the war.
"Strength is in the truth. It's always been that way. In 1943 and today. These war trophies reflect our strength. The more of them there are, the stronger we are," the statement reads. "No Western military equipment will change the situation on the battlefield.”
Despite it being a regular working day, long queues of locals turned up to the exhibit on Thursday too to show their support for their troops. “I feel ver...

- “We will never surrender!”: Georgians protest after “foreign agents” bill passes 2nd reading
- Date posted
- Description
- Thousands of demonstrators blocked a key intersection in Georgia's capital of Tbilisi on Thursday, as protests against a law on "foreign agents" in the country continue. The bill, which would require organizations receiving more than 20 per cent of their funding from abroad to register as agents of foreign influence, has sparked a political crisis in the South Caucasus country.
“We’ve been protesting this law since 2023. We’ve been there and we are here today unfortunately. But we will be there until the law drops, because we know what the European values are and we choose Europe. So we will never surrender,” 21-year-old local resident and protester Yelena said.
Georgian critics have dubbed the bill "the Russian law", saying it is inspired by laws used to suppress dissent in Vladimir Putin's Russia. Russia is unpopular among many citizens of Georgia, which lost a brief war with Moscow in 2008.
On Wednesday, Georgia's parliament approved ...

- People in India grappled with soaring temperatures on Wednesday, as a record-breaking heatwave continued into another month, scorching parts of the country. Drone footage showed women drawing water from a well and nearby river, as parts of the landscape appeared bone-dry.
Eastern India experienced its hottest April on record last month, with the state of Bengal reporting the highest number of heatwave days for the month in the last 15 years. In the coastal state of Odisha, heat conditions are the worst they’ve been in nine years.
“Despite our efforts to keep cool by pouring water on ourselves, nothing is working. We can feel steam rising from the ground,” described Kolkata resident Bharti Das.
India’s weather office expects rainfall will be normal in the month of May and predicts more showers during the second half of the monsoon season in August and September, compared to June and July.

- Peacocks roam free in small-town bird sanctuary after fateful flood
- Date posted

- Description
- A small Manitoba community, just a few hours west of Winnipeg, has gone through a bit of an identity crisis over the last decade or so. In a twist of fate, a flood that claimed their beloved bridge also set free a flock of peacocks from the town’s bird sanctuary. And with that, a new tourist attraction was born.
“It sure is an attraction,” says Jim Ludlam, fondly known as the "peacock man." He and his family donated a pair of birds to the sanctuary and he’s now tasked with minding a small flock kept in a barn at the former sanctuary site, as well as keeping tabs on the free-range flock — around 15 birds — who roam the streets and yards during the warm months.
The town usually rounds them up in the fall to keep them warm in winter and safe from predators. As spring has sprung, so have the peacocks from their winter hiding spots to once again strut their stuff in town.
Global’s Melissa Ridgen explains.

The OPP says it will now demand a mandatory breath sample from drivers for every traffic stop in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Data shows impaired driving charges are up almost 30 per cent from five years ago in the GTA, meaning 11,000 impaired driving charges last year compared to more than 8,000 in 2019.
There has also been a dramatic increase in collisions so far this year — around 50 per cent more — compared with the same time frame five years ago, police say.

- Conservatives asked during question period on Thursday whether the Liberals will keep it "illegal to smoke crack in a hospital room,” amid recent debate on a Toronto drug decriminalization request.
Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Ya’ara Saks responded by saying that “every request" to decriminalize drugs is "reviewed on a case-by-case basis,” and that Toronto Public Health has not submitted a proposal that “adequately addresses the dual objectives of public health and public safety.”
“I'm a minister. I'm a Toronto MP. I'm a Toronto mother,” Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland added. “The opioid crisis is a tragedy and there are no families in Canada that are untouched by it.”
“The B.C. pilot project was requested by B.C. — B.C. has serious concerns. We share those concerns, we are addressing it. There is no other pilot project anywhere in Canada, and the B.C. experience should and will be instructive,” Fre...

- 98-year-old Ukrainian woman walks 10 km in slippers to escape Russian shelling
- Date posted

- Description
- A 98-year-old Ukrainian woman said she walked 10 kilometres under shelling in just her slippers, supporting herself with sticks and sleeping on the ground. She left Ocheretyne, in Russian-occupied Donetsk, in an effort to reach areas controlled by Kyiv.
In a video posted by Ukraine's police on social media on Monday, the woman — identified as Lidia Stepanivna — said she had walked without food or water, and fell several times.
"I survived World War Two, and I am surviving this war," Stepanivna said, as she sat on a bed in a shelter. “That war was different. I saw it as well. None of the houses were burnt down. Houses are burning now.”
Ukraine's interior ministry said in a statement that the woman was discovered by Ukraine's military in the evening and handed to the police, who took her to a shelter for evacuees.

- Violent clashes at UCLA as police dismantle pro-Palestinian protest encampment
- Date posted
- Description
- Hundreds of helmeted police breached barricades at a pro-Palestinian encampment on the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) campus early on Thursday. The police dismantled the camp, arrested protesters, and removed them from the UCLA campus.
Supporters of the student protesters called the university's decision to bring in police and other law enforcement agencies "illegitimate" and "outrageous".
"I think in a place like UCLA where they tell you this is a place to have a free exchange of ideas and to learn about the world, yet when you stand up for Gaza, this is what happens?" Luna Hernandez, a community organizer, stated.
During the pre-dawn crackdown, loud explosions were heard from flash-bang charges or stun grenades fired by police during the clash. Later in the morning, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol confirmed that there were no injuries on both ends after police swarmed the site.

- U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made his seventh visit to Israel and the surrounding region on Wednesday amid its ongoing conflict with Hamas militants in Gaza.
After meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Blinken said that Israel made important compromises over a new deal proposal that could see Israeli hostages released in exchange for a ceasefire, but that the outcome is dependent on Hamas’ response.
Speaking with Israelis whose family members were killed or taken hostage by Hamas militants in the fateful Oct. 7 attacks, Blinken told them to “keep strong” and “keep the faith” as a decision looms.
Despite crowds of people cheering for Blinken and expressing satisfaction with his words to them, protests across Israel have continued.
“We need to stop the war, we need to bring back the hostages home,” said Ifat Kalderon on Thursday, a protester whose cousin was taken hostage by Hamas. “Enough,...

- Description
- U.S. President Joe Biden broke his silence on Thursday surrounding the Pro-Palestinian protests at university campuses across the country, as violent police crackdowns and counter-protests flared at schools like UCLA and Columbia.
"We are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people and squash dissent." Biden said in remarks at the White House. "But neither are we a lawless country. We're a civil society. And order must prevail."
Students at dozens of schools have rallied or camped out in recent days to oppose Israel's war in Gaza, demanding institutions stop doing business with companies that support the conflict.
Earlier, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan offered sharp criticism of the police crackdown on encampments, saying authorities were displaying "cruelty" toward pro-Palestinian students and academics.
"The limits of Western democracy are drawn by Israel's interests. Whatever infringes on Israel's interests is anti-democ...

- Climate change affecting how Canadians plan to buy homes: report
- Date posted
- Description
- As Canada is braces for another record wildfire season, the climate crisis is bleeding into another major challenge facing Canadians — housing.
A new BMO report released Monday found climate-related factors such as wildfires, floods, heatwaves, and storms will affect where 39 per cent of Canadians choose to live in the next five years. The percentage is higher among younger Canadians.
It jumps to 49 per cent for millennials (those born between 1981 to 1996) and 54 per cent for gen Z Canadians (those born between 1997 to 2012), the report said.
Alex Cool-Fergus, national policy manager at Climate Action Network Canada, said the data is not surprising considering that recent events have brought the climate crisis home for many Canadians.
