- The 300-year-old 'vampire' grave in Greater Manchester
- Date posted
- Description
- Did you know there's a 'vampire grave' in a churchyard in Greater Manchester?
Dated 1720, the stone coffin-shaped grave has been a feature of St Aidan's Church in Billinge, near Wigan and St Helens, for over 300-years.
It's certainly the churchyard's most striking grave and known locally as the 'vampire' grave thanks to its shape and unusual motif.
Carved into the stone is an emblem of a winged skull encircled by a serpent which is eating its own tail. This is an ancient circular symbol known as an Ouroborus, where a snake or dragon devours its own tail - representing the eternal cycle of destruction and rebirth. Meanwhile, above the skull is the carving of a curtain with an illegible inscription that has worn over time.
But who does it belong to? Watch and find out.

Hours earlier, Tony Adams had smashed the windows of Callum's home in Heywood, where he lived with his mother and siblings.
Fuelled by anger, Callum and a friend both went to Adams' home armed with glass bottles and began launching them at his property, in the early hours of September 17, 2022.
In an ensuing fracas, Callum and his friend were both stabbed. Callum was able to stagger away but collapsed and died shortly after. His pal survived.

- George Galloway's first speech in Parliament as he slams Labour and Tories

- George Galloway hit out at both Labour and the Conservatives in his first speech in Parliament as Rochdale's new MP.
The leader of the Workers Party of Britain opened his speech by saying: "As I was saying Madame Deputy Speaker, even in Parliament you can't be a maiden twice."
Mr Galloway paid tribute to his predecessor, Rochdale’s former Labour MP Sir Tony Lloyd, who he described as a 'significant figure that should never be forgotten in this House and certainly will not be forgotten in the Greater Manchester arena', but claimed the Labour Party had a 'very poor odour' in the town.
He also hit out at the Budget, telling the Commons: "Frankly all the spices in Rochdale could not give flavour to what can only be described as a nothing burger of a Budget. An absolute nothing burger and the response from the so-called Opposition in this House: equally vacuous."

The masked and gloved thieves - one armed with a long screwdriver - are seen casually going up and down the stairs, beside a sign that says 'home sweet home'.
The footage has been released to the Manchester Evening News by Greater Manchester Police as part of a campaign to tackle a spike in burglaries in Asian communities in the run up to Ramadan.
In recent weeks, officers across GMP have responded to a number of burglaries that specifically target family gold.
Family gold is usually high purity, high-value gold jewellery – often bought as gifts in Asian communities and passed down through generations, holding significant sentimental value.
Offenders are committing these burglaries in teams of two or three, and usually enter the properties after families have left...

A placard on the grass verge advertises fresh eggs for sale at the farm opposite. It's the archetypal picture of English rural life.
But a different sign attached to a fence in a muddy lay-by a little further down the lane offers a clue as to the village's unusual location. 'Think before you park,' it reads. 'We ask all airport users not to park outside people's homes'.
Welcome to Ringway, the only rural village in Manchester. The tiny ancient parish , home to the ruins of a medieval castle, is located on the south western edge of the city boundaries, on the border with Cheshire and Trafford.
In the 2011 census around 100 people called the village home and now it's thought that number may be even smaller. But Ringway has a very big neighbour.

- Beneath the bustling streets of Stockport’s town centre lies one of Greater Manchester’s more unusual attractions.
Carved into the sandstone rock that the town is built on is a network of tunnels around one mile in length, which were used as air raid shelters during the Second World War.
The first set of shelters opened in October 1939 and they were soon expanded, with the biggest eventually able to accommodate up to 6,500 people during air raids.
The tunnels were sealed off from the public in 1948, but the largest of the shelters, dubbed the ‘Chestergate Hotel’ by locals, was opened in 1996 as a museum, and today you can head underground and experience the tunnels for yourself.

- Description
- The 'world's hottest curry' eating challenge in Manchester is not for the faint-hearted.
It's made from Carolina Reaper chillies which until recently were the hottest chilli peppers in the world.
To put that into perspective, Cayenne peppers have a score of 50,000 whilst Habanero peppers boast a 350,000 score.
Curry fan Tom George told us he could handle spicy food - but he had no idea what was instore when he took on the food challenge.
He had to sign a waiver before the challenge due to the extreme effects it can have. It warned that taking part in the challenge ‘can cause serious injury/harm, including but not limited to stomach pain and discomfort’.
See how he got on above...

- Manchester pub with a skyscraper towering over it, blocking its sun terrace view #manchesternews
- Date posted
- Description
- Fans of a popular Manchester pub have been left reeling by the construction of a new skyscraper towering over its rooftop terrace - with some even calling it a ‘monstrosity’.
The Deansgate pub is home to one of the city’s most loved rooftop bars but what was once a suntrap has been left in the shadow of a new skyscraper. The bar’s views that used to stretch over the southern city centre skyline are now blocked by the tower.
Brewery Greene King acquired it in October 2021, and a refurbishment in 2022 saw the pub's two floors completely transformed, along with the outdoor terrace area.
Developer of the aparthotel, Ask Real Estate, said the owner of the pub before Greene King was 'happy with the arrangements’
The construction has now been taken over by Dean Street Developments
The Deansgate remains open while work is carried out
