- One Nation sweeps Farrer by-election
- Date posted
- Description
- One Nation says it will chase more seats after claiming a historic by-election win in the regional NSW seat of Farrer.
David Farley swept to victory in the sprawling electorate in southern NSW on Saturday night, ending the Coalition's 77-year reign in the federal seat.
With more than 80 per cent of ballots counted, Farley had claimed more than 57 per cent of the two-candidate-preferred vote to comfortably beat independent Michelle Milthorpe.
"One Nation has reached the end of its beginning. We're going through the ceiling from here," Farley said on Saturday night to a room that erupted in cheers and applause.
It is One Nation's first federal lower-house election victory since the party was founded by Pauline Hanson in 1997 and she had a message for the major parties.
"We're coming after those other seats," Hanson said.

- Could One Nation win a seat in the House of Representatives this weekend?
- Date posted
- Description
- The NSW seat of Farrer was recently vacated by former opposition leader Sussan Ley, and now there's a four-horse race across this sprawling electorate — the second largest in NSW.
The by-election offers voters a chance to shake up traditional political power in the regions of Australia.
Simon Welsh, director of political consultancy firm Redbridge, said "One Nation has become this very viable, credible alternative" for some voters.
He said the main contest was likely to be between independent candidate, Michelle Milthorpe — who reduced the margin against Sussan Ley at last year's federal election — and One Nation's David Farley.
Welsh said Milthorpe likely benefited from an "anti-establishment" vote at the last election.
"She's now having to share some of that with One Nation," he said.

- Budget 2026: 'Stagflation' fears hang over the most consequential budget in decades

- With the war in the Middle East shocking global energy markets, the Reserve Bank governor says Australia is "staring down the barrel" of a very rough time, as economic growth slows, inflation rises, and unemployment slowly picks up.
It's a trio of conditions that some economists warn could see a return of "stagflation", a policy nightmare not seen in Australia since the 1970s.
The challenge for Treasurer Jim Chalmers on 12 May is how to deliver cost of living relief, without fuelling an inflationary crisis that could push the economy over the edge.

Israeli media reported that the commander was killed in the strike, but there was no immediate confirmation from the Israeli military or Hezbollah.
Israel has also issued evacuation orders for several villages north of the Litani River, a move that received swift condemnation from the United Nations.
The Lebanon ceasefire has underpinned a broader US-Iran truce, with a halt to Israeli strikes in Lebanon being a key Iranian demand.
As Iran and the US say they are drawing closer to a deal to halt their conflict, the strikes threaten the ceasefire that halted Israeli attacks on Beirut.

- Number of missing or dead migrants doubles despite decrease in attempted crossings: UN report
- Date posted

- Description
- While attempted migrant crossings along the Central Mediterranean route has decreased, the number of migrants who were missing or found dead has doubled, according to the United Nations' 2026 World Migration report.
International Organisation for Migration (IOM) researcher Stuart Russell Campo said the data showed the routes taken by migrants were "becoming more dangerous and treacherous".
The report also showed that internal displacement was rising sharply, driven by conflict, violence and disaster.
IOM spokesperson Zoe Brennan said that "83.4 million people were internally displaced within their own countries" by the end of 2024, adding that it was "the highest number ever recorded".
“This underscores that most displacement happens within countries rather than across borders,” she said.
Brennan says the report aims to provide a guide on how countries can cooperate on the issue of migration.

"They should do the smart thing ... we don't want to go in and kill people," he told reporters at the White House.
This comes as the US announced it is halting military operation "Project Freedom" to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz after just one day, in a bid to reach a deal to end the war.
The request to pause the operation came from mediators in Pakistan and other countries, according to Trump on Truth Social.
Secretary of state Marco Rubio has also said that "Operation Epic Fury is concluded" after the US "achieved the objectives" of the war against Iran.
He told the reporters Project Freedom is "a defensive operation", adding: "What that means is very simple — there's no shooting unless we're shot at first".
