Over 85% of UNITE HERE Local 1 members voted to authorize a strike when 7,000 workers across almost 50 hotels in the Chicago area were left without a union contract on August 31st.

- On September 4th, neighbors and community members in Frederick, Maryland, were brutally beaten with batons and dragged by ICE agents across the pavement after locking arms while trying to stop ICE from forcefully entering a neighbor's home.
The assault came 48 hours after residents of the Taskers Chance community in Frederick noticed an intimidating surge of ICE presence in their neighborhood. They began to mobilize in response, taking notes and filming the ICE officers' actions. One of those neighbors was Reverend Michelle Beadle, an ordained clergywoman and Frederick County resident, who answered that call to bear witness to ICE. Beadle said she immediately noticed that the agents changed their behavior.

Joining the Party at age 17 after relocating from Hobson City, Alabama, to Oakland, Jennings managed BPP offices and served as bodyguard to Huey P. Newton. During Bobby Seale’s 1973 Oakland mayoral run, Jennings helped spearhead an unprecedented electoral effort: "…an organizing event on the highest level the parties had ever been. I mean, the party is known for organizing, but to go into electoral politics and do what we did for a first time basis, it changed over. Even though Bobby lost that election, it changed openly because it opened up so many doors. Part of his job was to kick down doors because we were the Vanguard."
Today, Jennings operates the official Black Panther Party Alumni website and leads political education initiatives across the Bay Area for the Party’s 60th Anniversary.

- Rowan Digital Infrastructure, a hyperscale data center campus construction company headquartered in Denver, Colorado, has been building a 2.2 million-square-foot data center campus in Frederick County, Maryland, to host cloud and AI workloads. The company is building three separate data centers on the campus, including Bauxite III for Amazon Web Services.
The massive campus was built on the site of a demolished aluminum industrial plant for East Alcoa, which placed the land under an environmental covenant, meaning the state restricts activities on sites where environmental contamination remains.
Hillary Gonzalez, an eco-poet and data center activist, spoke with neighbors living 500 feet from the data center, who said that Rowan Digital Infrastructure violated the environmental covenant by moving contaminated dirt on public roads. Gonzalez also spoke with residents about the noise and light pollution resulting from the construction.

- On September 4th, ICE agents inside the Taskers Chance neighborhood in Frederick, Maryland, beat protestors with batons. They dragged them on concrete as they broke up a barricade of protestors attempting to stop the agency from entering a home.
The agents maintained a two-day presence in the neighborhood, instilling fear among residents and causing some to stay home from work. Protesters organized in response and confronted the agents on Friday night.
The agents recklessly drove their vehicles on sidewalks and nearly hit protesters in some videos shared with The Real News Network. Photos shared also revealed that some ICE vehicles had obscured license plates.

First Amendment auditors and cop watchers with audiences ranging from thousands to more than a million subscribers say their channels have suddenly been demonetized.
The obvious explanation might be YouTube's enforcement against repetitive, mass-produced or AI-generated content. But the creators we're investigating aren't AI channels. They're filming police, publishing encounters with public officials and, in some cases, using body-camera footage.
So what is happening?
Is this ordinary YouTube enforcement affecting many different kinds of creators or is the cop-watching/First Amendment auditing community being disproportionately affected?
There are other developments we're examining, including new laws restricting how closely people can record police and increasingly contentious battles between police unions and cop watchers.

- When Israeli forces besieged Al-Shifa Hospital in November 2023, eight premature babies in incubators were evacuated to Egypt under fire. One of them was Joud. His mother, Fatima Dakkeh, spent the next two years and eight months searching for him and fighting to bring him home.
Fatima tells the story of giving birth just months before October 7, losing contact with her son during the first Israeli raid on Al-Shifa, learning a year later that he was alive in Egypt, and a bittersweet reunion with a child who no longer recognized her.
According to the International Rescue Committee, at least 17,000 children in Gaza are unaccompanied or separated from their parents. For many families, there will be no reunion.
