- Increasingly, Trump has his sights set on Mexico—promising to send in US troops in the name of fighting cartels and advancing a so-called drug war policy. But Trump’s actions hearken back to an era of US empire much, much older.
See, Mexico has withstood a long history of foreign intervention by the Spanish, French, and multiple times by the United States.
In 1848, Mexico lost more than half its territory to the United States. The US states of California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and more used to be part of Mexico.
Today, host Michael Fox visits Mexico’s National Museum of Interventions in Mexico City, and we look back at the devastating history of foreign intervention in Mexico amid Trump’s threats against Mexico and elsewhere in the region today.
This is Episode 9 of Under the Shadow, Season 2.

- At least 17 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are on board with Trump’s new military alliance. They are calling it the America’s Counter Cartel Coalition. Latin America’s top right-wing leaders are involved, including El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele and Argentina’s Javier Milei. They met in Florida for the event, on March 7.
The United States has promised to use lethal force to destroy cartels and narco-traffickers in those nations. Kristi Noem, the former head of Homeland Security, is the new special envoy for the coalition.
This is a new phase of Trump’s plan for Latin America. Trump’s Donroe Doctrine—Monroe 2.0. The first was the offensive against his enemies in the region. Now Trump is shoring up his allies, and building a coalition where the US military can continue to take action, now in collaboration with countries allied with Trump. We’ve already begun to see this unfold in Ecuador.

- Cuba is facing the greatest existential threat it has seen in decades. Trash is filling streets, because garbage trucks can’t make the rounds. Rolling blackouts, rising food prices and cuts to transportation, university classes, and hospitals amid a gas shortage, the likes of which the country hasn’t seen in years.
US President Donald Trump, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and other officials have made it clear that they aren’t interested in anything less than regime change. And they’re going after that goal full throttle. The United States is now imposing an oil blockade on the island nation that is pushing it to the brink – and hitting its most vulnerable residents the hardest.
In this episode, we look at Cuba, the history of the more than 65-year-old US embargo on Cuba and Trump’s actions.

Today’s episode turns the lens back on the United States. Because the shadow of the United States itself is hanging dangerously over US cities and communities like never before.

- Description
- On January 3, 2026, the United States invaded Venezuela and kidnapped president Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. It was the first US invasion of a Latin American country since the 1989 invasion of Panama.
The United States fired missiles and bombs that blew out windows and hit residential apartment blocks. Helicopters. Explosions. Firebombs. They cut electricity. They destroyed a medical supplies warehouse. Testimonies say helicopters fired on innocent people. They traumatized thousands, if not millions, of Venezuelans.
The aftermath for everyday Venezuelans has been completely ignored. The voices of those on the ground—the voices of the victims—have been largely silenced in the international press and then forgotten as the news cycle hurtles on and our attention shifts elsewhere—to Greenland, Minneapolis, Iran, Gaza, or whatever Trump happens to be blustering about on social media.
So today, we’re heading to Caracas to speak to...

- In the hours after the Jan. 3 US invasion of Venezuela, social media was inundated with fake videos and images. Some showed Venezuelans holding huge rallies in favor of the US invasion. Others showed US troops landing or firing from helicopters. Others showed Maduro being kidnapped.
Not all were AI. Some were old, showing anti-government rallies from years past. Or from other places—other invasions or bombing raids, unrelated to the current US attack.
But these videos racked up tons of views, misleading millions of people about what was happening on the ground. Many of those people still don’t know the truth.
It was only the tip of the iceberg.
Today, host Michael Fox looks at the misconceptions, myths, and misinformation that has been spread about Venezuela in the wake of the US invasion and, together with political scientist Steve Ellner, dives headfirst into the biased reporting and slanted truths that have underpinned the main...

- Description
- In the early hours of Saturday morning, January 3rd, Venezuelans were awoken by the sounds of bombs falling. US helicopters whirled overhead. Explosions struck across the capital Caracas and in surrounding states.
Hours of chaos, fear, and uncertainty.
President Donald Trump would post over social media that the US had “captured” Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores amid a “large-scale” strike against the country.
This is the first US invasion of another country in Latin America since the 1989 invasion of Panama, when the US kidnapped and detained Panamanian President Manuel Noriega under charges of drug trafficking. The Trump administration used the same excuse to detain Maduro, despite lack of evidence linking Maduro to drug trafficking.
With this strike, the United States has taken an unprecedented step: This is the first time the United States has used its own military to invade a South American c...

- On September 2, President Donald Trump announced from the Oval Office that the US Navy had carried out an air strike on a boat in international waters. That boat strike rewrote US policy for Latin America overnight. Three months later, 26 boats have been hit, killing more than 90 people. The United States has codified its justification for the boat strikes as part of a new National Security Strategy, published in early December 2025. In the National Security Strategy, Trump announced a new Trump Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine, which he hopes can propel the United States and the US military to preeminence in the hemisphere. Trump’s actions suggest he believes he has broad latitude to take whatever measures he deems necessary, regardless of international law, the sovereignty of other nations, or the impact on human life. This reenvisioning of US policy for Latin America has disastrous implications for the region. More missile strikes. Loss of innocent lives. And even wrapping the Uni...

- Distinguished Professor of Black Study Dylan Rodríguez deconstructs the central premise of his book, White Reconstruction: Domestic Warfare and the Logic of Genocide. Rodríguez critiques the era of the late 2000s and 2010s—a period defined by the seductive myth that a "post-civil rights" moment had finally arrived. By examining "reforms" like DEI recruiting initiatives within the LAPD, he illustrates how the state transforms the targets of its violence into its active participants. Ultimately, Rodríguez argues that white supremacy is not merely a demographic category, but a political template that can be inhabited and executed by people of color.

The lawmakers argue billionaire donors and corporate money are tightening their grip on American democracy while ordinary voters are pushed aside.

More info from CBS News (4/10/26): "When 40 women came for a required check-in with ICE over a two-day period in March, they were detained in holding rooms, according to the People's Power Assembly (PPA). The group heard about it from other activists in Washington state. "They do regular visits with detainees in ICE facilities and that's how they heard about this story, they brought it to us," said PPA organizer Andrew Mayton... WJZ has reached out to ICE about the women's detainment, but there's been no response."

- Union longshore workers in the Port of Tacoma, WA, are sounding the alarm about an urgent threat of jobs lost on the ports to automation. We speak with Zack Pattin and Brian Skiffington of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 23.
They and their union are calling on members of the public to sign their Action Network petition telling the Port of Tacoma’s elected commissioners to block Husky Terminal's request to use AI: "Husky Terminal, which leases ship-to-shore cranes from the Port of Tacoma, is trying to replace marine clerks with job-killing tech. They just submitted what’s called a 'tenant improvement request' to install these functions on publicly-owned Port property. If approved by Port managers, that means our tax dollars are directly financing Husky’s efforts to eliminate good jobs in the community and attack our union."

- Description
- William C. Anderson, author of The Nation on No Map, has been documenting the erosion of the Voting Rights Act since its first major blow was struck in his hometown of Shelby County. Thirteen years after Chief Justice John Roberts invoked a "Post-Racial" America to justify the Shelby v. Holder decision, the ruling in Louisiana v. Callais serves as a final, sobering confirmation: the dismantling of civil rights legislation isn't proof of progress—it is a calculated reversal of Black political empowerment.

- Description
- The legal ground beneath hundreds of thousands of young immigrants just shifted, and the consequences could be devastating.
In this report, we break down a major immigration ruling that could open the door to deportations for DACA recipients — young adults who were brought to the United States as children and have lived, worked, and built their lives here under the protection of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Originally established during the Obama administration, DACA allowed vetted individuals to live without fear of removal. But a recent decision from an immigration appeals court, along with a new ruling from the Board of Immigration Appeals, has fundamentally altered that protection. The result: DACA may no longer shield recipients from deportation.
That means teachers, nurses, students, and workers, people deeply rooted in their communities, could now face removal from the only country many of them have ever known.

- In this episode of the Police Accountability Report we speak with Ismael Rincon aka Corners News @CornersLaredo of Texas who often encounters Customs and Border Patrol while driving to pick up clients for ride share. Federal agents have now taken to stopping cars and engaging in traffic enforcement, and in his case prolonging a stop to introduce K-9 even though it was established that the driver was an American citizen. Federal agents stopping American citizens shouldn't be a problem if they have nothing to hide, right? Unfortunately, history has taught us that allowing governmental agents more and more access to your private property, your person, and your time leads to the erosion of civil rights and often more disastrous consequences for the individual. Join us for the conversation, live chat, and discussion in the comment section on where Americans should draw the line between privacy and constitutional rights and the current imperative of law enforcement.

Lawmakers are now pushing Virginia’s Law, named for Virginia Giuffre, to eliminate the statute of limitations on federal sex crimes.
Despite a request to King Charles III to meet with survivors, no response came.
But the message from survivors was unmistakable: they are still here and they are still fighting for accountability. The were joined by organizations that fight human trafficking and protect vulnerable young people like Amanda Roberts and Sky Roberts of SOAR, Sharlene Rochard, Activist (Epstein survivor), Megan Lundstrom CEO of Polaris Project, Yasmin Vafa, Executive Director, Rights4Girls Arisha Hatch, Executive Director, UltraViolet Lauren Hersh, Chief Exec...

So what happens when journalists ask tough questions about war, power, and accountability? They get called heretics. Asking our federal government questions is now blasphemy? The budget for ICE has already increased by 400% within the past year, so speculation as to how these new funds would be used now leans towards intimidation and interference at the upcoming midterm elections. Rep. Rob Menendez warns that without clear limits, this kind of enforcement power could be used to interfere with elections, specifically elections in blue states. Republican supporters say it’s about security but its critics in the Hispanic Caucus say it’s about unchecked power.
So the question is where are the guardrails and can the Democrats actually do anything to stop it?
