- ► The family of Jean Hanlon have expressed their relief after a 17-year fight for justice finally resulted in a guilty verdict.
Miss Hanlon’s body was found in water off Heraklion in March 2009, with authorities initially ruling that the Scot’s death was accidental.
Her family pushed for the case to be reinvestigated, and a subsequent report found she had suffered injuries consistent with a struggle.
In 2023, the family hired a private investigator who compiled a report with a named suspect and handed it to authorities.
A 54-year-old Greek man – who under Greek law will not be named until the court process including appeals is over – has now been convicted of Miss Hanlon’s murder and jailed for 10 years.
The court recognised his diminished responsibility due to mental health conditions, and he will not go to prison until his appeal is heard.
The court was told the suspect was in a brie...

- ► Uber error led to Kissi being caught.
It was a simple plan, and it worked perfectly.
Kwabena Kissi put on his old security guard uniform, strolled into a Santander bank, then walked out with £117,000.
Bank staff were said to have only realised they’d been robbed when the security guard meant to collect the money arrived to make the collection.
For almost four years, Kissi avoided capture - having fled to Ghana – but he was arrested when he returned to the UK in March 2025.
The court was told Kissi worked for G4S between 2019 and 2020 but failed to return his uniform when he quit.
The 40-year-old, the court heard, let himself down, by messing up his getaway. He ordered an Uber in his own name.
Kissi was jailed this week for three years and four months.

Alejandra Garcia’s pet vanished on May 24 from her home in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. Despite extensive searches, there was no sign of Gorda anywhere.
Then, following Mexico’s 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic, Miss Garcia’s brother spotted Gorda while scrolling social media. One El Tri fans was spotted carrying a dog as he paraded through the streets in Ciudad Victoria.

- ► “That fan is life or death.”
Chaos erupts in French supermarkets as people battle for air-conditioning units and fans ahead of this weekend’s heatwave.
The carnage began after Lidl promised to put out 200,000 fans and air conditioners on its shelves on Thursday, prompting customers to queue outside stores before dawn in preparation.
Video circulating online shows hundreds of desperate shoppers flocking to stores, screaming and fighting in a bid to get their hands on the machines before expected temperatures of up to 37°C. Police were reportedly forced to intervene as scenes quickly became violent.
Public Health France recorded a surge in deaths during last week’s heatwave, which hit most of Europe with temperatures that soared above 40°C in many places. Last Wednesday, France registered its hottest-ever day, breaking a record that had been set just the previous day.

Officials say the children, all from the same family, were kept in a 12-by-12-foot room with with human waste for much of the past four years.
Authorities described the scene as "almost beyond comprehension" and "pure evil," noting the children were barely able to communicate, and an 18-year-old developmentally disabled individual could not write her name.
Seven children were transported to hospitals, with two flown by helicopter and one in a critical condition.
The children’s parents and two grandparents were each charged with 16 counts of second-degree felony child endangerment because it involves “serious physical harm”, said Vinton County Prosecuting Attorney William Archer. He also stressed that this was not a human trafficking case but an “intra-family situation”.

- Description
- ► Two 15-year-old boys who were spared custody for the rape of two girls in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, have been sentenced to four years’ detention after the Court of Appeal ruled their sentences were “unduly lenient”.
The boys, known as X and Y, and another aged 14 known as Z, were given non-custodial sentences in May for a combined 10 counts of rape and seven indecent image offences related to two victims, who were separately attacked in the Hampshire town in November 2024 and January 2025.
The two older boys were involved in both attacks, while the 14-year-old encouraged the rape of the second victim.
They were given non-custodial sentences in May after a judge at Southampton Crown Court said he should “avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily” and that detention was a “last resort”, but the Attorney General referred the sentences to the Court of Appeal as “unduly lenient” days later.

- ► A decision on the sentences of three teenage boys for the rape of two girls slammed as “unduly lenient” is expected to be delivered by appeal court justices on Thursday afternoon.
Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr said the boys are expected to attend Southampton Crown Court, and appear at the Court of Appeal in London via videolink, as the justices want to “address the boys directly”.
Opening the Attorney General’s case, Tom Little KC told the Court of Appeal that “no sentence other than detention was appropriate” for the boys who were spared custody over the rape of two girls.
Mr Little said that Judge Nicholas Rowland, who sentenced the boys at Southampton Crown Court in May, oversaw a “difficult sentencing exercise” given the ages of the offenders and the victims, but that the case involved “the application of well-established principles”.
He said: “We accept… that the judge did try to apply the ...

Nigel Farage was paid £270,000 from a gold marketer for which he is a brand ambassador.
It is the Reform UK leader’s largest single payment registered for work outside his role as an MP, and its reignited debate about the rules around MPs having second jobs.
Mr Farage has previously faced criticism over his £400,000-a-year second job encouraging people to buy gold for Direct Bullion. His latest payment, for just 12-hours work, is double his 2025 fee and was registered in May. It appears in the politician's latest entry in parliament’s register of interests, published Tuesday.
Mr Farage declared that the payment from Direct Bullion was for work amounting to an estimated four hours per month across a three-month period.
A spokesman for the MP said: "As has previously been reported and declared, Nigel Farage is a brand ambassador for Direct Bullion."

- ► The ringleader of the Rochdale grooming gang is to be released from jail tomorrow – and can’t be deported because of immigration laws.
Shabir Ahmed, 73, had dual British Pakistani citizenship but was stripped of the former after being convicted in 2012 for multiple rape and sexual offences against girls in what became a national scandal.
Probation Service documents shared online, suggest Ahmed will be freed on Thursday.
He will be subject to licence conditions, including that he, initially, must live in supervised accommodation 24/7 and be subject to an “exclusion zone” centred on Rochdale.
The papers, said to have been released by one of his victims, says Ahmed can’t be deported back to Pakistan due to provisions under the Immigration Act 1971.
Because Ahmed arrived in the UK before 1973 and lived in the country for at least five years before his deportation was considered, he can’t be removed. <...

A policewoman is heard screaming in agony after a man she was trying to arrest poured boiling water on her.
Two officers were called to the Birmingham home of John Davies, where they found he had “another man cornered against a fence”.
One of the officers separated the men before Davies, 58, went inside the property. Officers were told Davies had a knife and he was confronted about it.
Davies denied it, police said, but suddenly “threw the contents of a hot drink he had made into the face of the man he’d been arguing with”.
The officers tried to arrest Davies, but he punched one in the face and grabbed the recently boiled kettle and poured it over the other.
“She was left with blistering over her shoulders, back and neck,” police said in a statement.
Davies has since admitted maliciously wounding the PC with intent to resist arrest, assaulting the o...

- ► Three Afghan nationals were caught laughing and joking at they attempted to flee the UK after raping a teenage girl.
The men filmed each other while being smuggled in the back of a lorry to France three days after they piled a 17-year-old with alcohol and took turns raping her at a house in Bristol in November last year.
The footage shot by Mehrab Safi, 21, of his friends, Awal Ahmadzai and Salman Habibkheil, both 19, was played in court this week when the men were convicted of grooming and raping the teen. A fourth assailant, a 17-year-old Afghan national who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also convicted on the same charges.
The court was told the video was a “direct insight into the mood of three”, and that the men appear to be “celebrating because they think they got away with it”.
The trio were spotted by French authorities soon after arriving in Calais and returned to the UK where they were arrested on suspici...

- ► A chilling 911 call has been released detailing the harrowing final moments of a women’s life after she was savaged by an alligator, and the desperate attempts to save her life.
Brittany Clark was hiking with her boyfriend, Chance Allison, and a friend when they decided to cool off in the Econlockhatchee River in Florida.
The 31-year-old was then ambushed by a 12-foot alligator.
Mr Allison reportedly tried to fight off the apex predator that tore off one of Miss Clark’s arms and left the other barely attached.
A medical examiner’s report reads: “While they were swimming an alligator grabbed [Brittany] by her arm and began the ‘death roll’.
“Her boyfriend Chance grabbed the alligator trying to get it to release her when it took them both underwater.”
Mr Allison was able to free one of Miss Clark’s arms, “for a moment” before the alligator bit down on the other one, the report says.

A man wanted by police for failing to appear in court tried to hide from officers by putting a bag-for-life over his head.
Hertfordshire Constabulary posted a bodycam video of the arrest on their Facebook page where it has since gone viral.
It shows officers arriving at a property in St Albans and asking if the man – who has not been identified – is home. The person answering the door, says no, but officers ask to come in and “have a look”.
The officer is then seen walking through the house and entering a back bedroom when a yellow bag appears to sit upright above a duvet.
Pulling on the bag, a man’s head appears and the officer says, rather comically: “Hello. How are you mate?” He then adds: “keep your hands where I can see them.”

- ► Millions of Brits are being urged to take action now to avoid higher energy bills with the price cap rising on Wednesday.
An estimated 5.3 million households on standard tariffs, who don’t have a smart meter, are being urged to submit a meter reading before the price cap, set by regulator, Ofgem, rises 13 percent.
Households that don’t submit up-to-date meter readings risk having some of their June usage charged at the more expensive rate.
Based on the new rates, the average gas and electricity bill will increase by £221 to £1,862 a year. The step up reflects the spike in global energy market prices caused by the war on Iran.

- Description
- ► Bereaved mums' campaign for changes pays off.
Killers who take the lives of their partners or exes will face an extra 10 years in jail under plans to overhaul controversial sentencing laws.
Under existing laws, domestic killers got lighter sentences because they often did not bring a weapon to the scene of the crime – they used something already there, like a kitchen knife.
As a result, the typical sentencing starting point for domestic killers is 15 years, compared to 25 years in other circumstances.
The change follows a campaign by three bereaved mums.

- ► Keir Starmer announced a £15 billion boost in defence spending on Tuesday but warning his successor not to borrow more to pay for it after he raided energy, transport and housing projects to pay for it.
Sir Keir revealed his long-awaited defence investment plan (Dip) after an 11-month government row that led to the defence secretary John Healey quitting and played a part in his resignation. He said the plan reversed a “corrosive hollowing out” of the armed forces and would mean the UK would be ready to fight Russia by 2030 if necessary.
The PM said conflicts in Ukraine and in the Middle East are not “remote” threats.
“We see the horrendous human toll of these conflicts, which cuts across our values of justice and sovereignty, and that simple British impulse that bullies and dictators cannot be allowed to push people around,” Sir Keir said as the defence investment plan was revealed.
“We also know that these thr...
