- ► A man who plotted to attack a military base in Oxfordshire has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 17 years.
Mohammad Bashir wanted to carry out an atrocity alongside his friend, Jihad Al-Shamie, the Manchester synagogue attacker.
Bashir 31 drove Al-Shamie on a 10-hour round trip to conduct hostile reconnaissance at the UK's Defence Academy in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire, on 14 August 2025.
Sentencing Bashir, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb told him that by August last year he had become a "firmly committed jihadist".
He and Al-Shamie were "equally engaged" in planning an attack on a British military target "in which you and he expected to kill and be killed", she said.
Despite Bashir's claim to a probation officer that he regretted his actions and no longer held extremist views, the judge said: "I consider you remain dangerous. You have given no grounds that your attitude has really changed at all."

A police officer has been unmasked as a violent sex offender after taking his own life following a 14-year spree of rapes and attempted murders.
PC Alan Greer’s first known victim was a woman he raped in her home in Glasgow in 2012, after she called police to report being a victim of crime. The woman reported the attack to police late last year sparking one of Police Scotland’s “largest and most complex enquiries” ever undertaken by the anti-corruption unit.
Detectives have since uncovered eight further victims, five of whom were sex workers, attacked while Greer was off duty, the BBC reported. Some of the attacks were said to be so violent they constituted attempted murder.
The 47-year-old was a married father of one, with his wife and family said to be completely unaware of his double life as a rapist.

In the video, shared by Mr Farage online, he was seen standing with a group at the side of a road, when a woman drove past, leaned out the window of a grey Vauxhall Astra and shouted "w****er".
Before the driver could bring the vehicle to a halt, a loud crunch can be heard as she ploughs into a car in front.
Mr Farage is currently campaigning in the town after he quit as an MP on 7 July, and is due to face Count Binface in the Clacton by-election in August.

- Description
- ► Scientists have captured “eye-opening” footage of orcas ramming into sharptail sunfish with such force, that it shatters into fragments.
The footage of the apex predators, recorded off the coast of Mexico in 2024 and 2025, have now been published in the journal Frontiers in Ethology.
A diver can be heard saying “Oh, my God” as one orca held the fish carcass while another accelerated toward it at high speed, striking it with explosive force.
The impact caused the fish to break apart into hundreds of smaller pieces, scattering through the water.
Researchers have termed the behaviour 'ram-to-fragment' and believe that by breaking large prey into smaller portions, adult orcas could be making it easier for younger members of the pod to feed.
However, scientists suggest it could be a form of play. Orcas are well-known for their intelligence, and so the dramatic smashing of the sunfish could be social bonding.

- ► A wildlife charity has said more than 2,200 animals classed as being dangerous, including pit vipers, tigers and crocodiles, are being legally kept in “private setting” in the UK, including private homes, sanctuaries and conservation projects.
The presence of dangerous and exotic animals in the UK has been thrown into focus following the recent discovery of a discarded marmoset on a bus in northwest London. It has since been rehomed in a sanctuary and nicknamed, Oyster. New legislation means that a licence is required to keep dangerous animals, but it is feared that may lead to more exotic animals being abandoned.
The Times reported on Wednesday that local authority data showed that more than 500 venomous snakes are being kept privately, including in sanctuarites and educational facilities. Private entities also hold nearly 300 primates, 79 crocodiles, alligators and caimans, and 166 wild cats including lions, pumas and tigers.

A man reportedly got stuck inside a Portaloo for eight hours after getting stuck inside the bowl while trying to retrieve a bottle of Mountain Dew.
Kansas City firefighters were called to cut the man out of the stinky situation which was noticed after a worker from the portable toilet company tried to collect the loos and a man inside refused to come out.
In a social media post, Patriot Portable Restrooms partner, Chip Counterman, explained that the worker knocked on all the doors of the toilets placed at a World Cup event and “found one was locked”.

A firefighter is being praised for getting on his knees to help a breathless pigeon – even using an oxygen mask to help the avian get back in the air.
Oakland’s E29 crew noticed the bird in distress earlier this week, with the crew posting on social media that the bird “came up to them seeking help”.
The crew noted that the bird seemed to have suffered smoke inhalation from a vehicle fire, so it “administered the pigeon some oxygen and the bird shortly flew away after clearing out its lungs”.
The post has since taken off, with over one million likes. Commenters praised the fire fighter for being “kind and compassionate”.

This was a text message sent by one of three British con artists found guilty of carrying out a PPE scam so they could buy luxury cars, watches and holidays.
During Covid, Jogesh Bhandari, 59, Meenakshi Bhandari, 58, and Craig Morris, 43, worked together with a man in America, to sell medical gloves that were never delivered.
Among 47,000 messages between the two men, Morris wrote: "All over the news is all about PPE shortage. Let’s clean up!! Milk it… fill ya boots."

- ► British teens aged 16 and 17 face an overnight social media curfew, the government has announced – but they will be able to simply opt out of it.
The proposal will mean social apps like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, being set to unavailable – by default – to 16 and 17-year-olds between midnight and 6am.
The government also wants features like auto-play and infinite scroll to be disabled.
The online safety minister has denied teenagers would simply switch the curfew off, saying the suggestion does a “disservice” to them.
Kanishka Narayan said the government wanted to “empower” 16- and 17-year-olds.
“I wouldn’t belittle that because when we have seen evidence on this sort of stuff. In October, for example, some platforms introduced these defaults of this sort – 90%-plus teenagers said to us that they’ve maintained those defaults as well. “And so, the evidence base is clear, the motivation...

- ► A man who raped and murdered his estranged wife and staged a scene to make her death look like a suicide has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 33 years after refusing to enter the courtroom for his sentencing.
Michael Thompson, 56, subjected Kimberley Thompson to years of domestic abuse, including controlling, coercive behaviour, and physical violence and made hundreds of hours of recordings of her before he suffocated her at their Northampton home in the early hours of August 9 last year.
Thompson, of Pinewood Road, Northampton, was not present for his sentencing hearing at Nottingham Crown Court after defence barrister Jonas Hankin KC told the court he was “voluntarily absent”.
A seven-week trial heard that Thompson claimed they had consensual sex before he later found 43-year-old Ms Thompson lifeless and surrounded by tablets and alcohol bottles.

The proposed Hillsborough Law takes its name from the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, which claimed 97 lives after a crush during the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesday's ground.
