- Labour's sharks are circling: How long can Keir Starmer cling on?
- Date posted
- Description
- For those with long enough memories, Sir Keir Starmer’s belligerent insistence that he is “not going to walk away” may sound tonally identical to the words of another beleaguered leader from the past.
In November 1990, Margaret Thatcher cheerfully told guests at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet that she was “still at the crease” despite predictions of her demise.
The following day, her deputy, Geoffrey Howe, made his famous resignation speech in the Commons, a leadership contest ensued, and nine days later she was gone.
After the disastrous results for Labour in Thursday’s elections, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that Starmer is in similar territory.

- Reform and Greens have exploded the two-party system - but can they storm Westminster?
- Date posted

- Description
- Sir Keir Starmer is “increasingly unlikely” to lead Labour at the next general election, a campaign group backed by Andy Burnham has said.
Mainstream, a soft-Left pressure group, blamed the party’s dire local election results on a “failed political experiment at the top of the Labour Party that has put control, centralisation, and factional advantage before the founding principles of our movement”.
The group demanded “an orderly transition and a genuinely open, democratic debate about both who and what comes next”.
The statement will fuel further speculation that Mr Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, could mount a leadership challenge against Sir Keir in the wake of Labour’s election bloodbath.

- ‘Love tap’ or ‘reckless adventure’? US and Iran trade fire and blame
- Date posted

- Description
- The US and Iran have traded fire - and blame - in the Strait of Hormuz, is the war about to restart?
The ceasefire is looking shakier than ever after America bombed Iranian coastal cities overnight. It said it was a response to Tehran attacking three US destroyers passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Today, Iran has attacked the UAE with drones and missiles. President Donald Trump says the US strikes were just a “love tap”, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi calls it a “reckless military adventure”.
Venetia Rainey is joined by Washington bureau chief Arthur MacMillan to discuss the view from the US following a week of U-turns and uncertainty. He explains why he does not have high expectations of a peace deal being struck before Trump goes to China, what the American public make of the war, and why the US may well pull more troops out of Europe.

Even if the president is right this time and a US-Iran agreement is about to be announced, will it cover anything more than reopening the strait?
What about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, particularly its 440kg of highly enriched uranium, and the regime’s surviving arsenal of ballistic missiles, along with its sponsorship of terrorism?
That leaves Trump with three options, all with huge disadvantages.

In an attempt to popularise the religion among young people, the 4ft 3in humanoid led a procession of monks at Jogye Temple, Seoul, on Wednesday to celebrate the Buddha’s birthday on May 24.
The android, named Gabi, wore grey and brown Buddhist garb as it was consecrated by the country’s largest Buddhist sect, the Jogye order.
During the ceremony on Wednesday, one of the monks asked: “Robot monk, please reply with palms together, ‘Yes, I will devote myself.’”
“Yes, I will devote myself,” replied Gabi, before one of the monks placed a rosary around its neck.
It was told to respect life, not damage other robots or objects, follow humans and not speak back to them, not to act deceptively, and to save energy and not to overcharge.

- How hantavirus made it on board MV Hondius cruise ship

- How did a contagious rat virus get on board a ship with supposedly watertight rodent prevention policies?
The working theory is that the untreatable Hantavirus was brought aboard by a couple travelling in South America.
The outbreak has already claimed the lives of multiple passengers on the MV Hondius – while the rest remain stranded on the vessel near the Canary Islands.
The WHO are now investigating whether the Dutch couple – who were later flown to Johannesburg, where the woman died – inadvertently sparked the health emergency, by contracting the virus from rodents during their travels.

- Starmer set for ‘catastrophic week’ as Labour vote collapses | The Daily T
- Date posted
- Description
- With 48 hours to go before the local and devolved elections, the verdict seems to be in already: the public hates Sir Keir Starmer and the two main parties – and many will never vote for Labour or the Conservatives again.
That is according to new polling that found only one in seven voters who have abandoned those parties would return if Reform UK or the Green Party failed to deliver change. The survey also showed an appetite for NHS reform and higher taxes on big business and the rich.
Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley are joined by Scarlett Maguire and Lee Cain, the pollsters behind the findings, to understand why the public is losing faith in politics.
Meanwhile, they discuss the state of the campaign trail, with Kemi Badenoch clashing with a pro-Palestine heckler and Zack Polanski’s poll ratings tanking after his row with the police.

- Why Trump’s Project Freedom will fail without more force
- Date posted

- Description
- Is the US-Iran war about to restart amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz?
Donald Trump has launched Project Freedom - a US Navy mission to break the Iranian blockade imposed since the beginning of the war. However, while the White House has framed the escort of neutral vessels as a “humanitarian gesture”, Tehran sees it as an escalation. Iran has fired missiles and drones at ships and an oil port in the UAE, and today says it is “just getting started”.
Roland Oliphant and chief foreign affairs commentator David Blair discuss the latest updates and why both sides are now likely locked in a downward spiral, putting us “one step” away from renewed all-out fighting.
Plus, former US Navy submariner Bryan Clark, director of the Center for Defense Concepts and Technology at the Hudson Institute, explains why America must put more force into the Strait of Hormuz if it wants to win against a patient enemy like Iran. He also ...

- Oil, revolution and ayatollahs: how Iran went from great power to rogue state
- Date posted
- Description
- Within living memory, Tehran ruled an oil-rich great power brimming with intellectuals inspired by British democracy. So how did it become an impoverished rogue state at war with the West?
In this special Bank Holiday edition, Ali Ansari, professor of Iranian history at the University of St Andrews, takes Roland Oliphant through Iran's tumultuous modern era: from the 1906 Constitutional Revolution and the 1953 coup, to the 1979 ousting of the shah and the 2026 US assassination of Ali Khamenei.
From the blunders of the unlikely "midwife" of the modern Iranian state - Great Britain - to the catastrophic decisions of successive Supreme Leaders after the founding of the Islamic Republic, he charts the course that shaped the country Donald Trump is fighting today.
How do the myths overshadow the facts of the CIA's 1953 coup and the Iran-Iraq war? Why is the regime so obsessed with enriching uranium and fighting Israel and America? And is the UK guilty...

- In the Holyrood elections, all the main parties have wrapped themselves in the Saltire, but on doorsteps it’s not independence that is driving voter intentions.
The debate in Scotland – just like in other parts of Britain – is dominated by anger with Sir Keir Starmer and the UK Government over immigration, high energy bills and other issues.
Two years ago, polling suggested that the Scottish Labour Party, led by Anas Sarwar, would oust the SNP. Now, the polls paint a very different picture – one with much less red in it.
Despite the SNP’s poor record of delivery on devolved public services, such as education and health, the anger towards Westminster means the nationalists are on course to remain the largest party. Some data suggest they could secure a majority.

In this Daily T special, Tim Stanley and Rachel Johnson speak to Christine Dawood, who lost her husband Shahzada and her son Suleman in the disaster.
In her memoir Ninety-Six Hours, she recounts the agonising wait aboard the support vessel as the search unfolded above the wreck of the RMS Titanic sinking, and reveals the heartbreaking decision that led her to give up her own seat on the submersible to her son, who had dreamed of making the dive.
