- PBS News Weekly: The Israel-Hamas War | March. 15, 2024
- Date posted
- Description
- The war between Israel and Hamas has passed the five-month mark. As millions of muslims mark the holy month of Ramadan, the holiday comes in the shadow of the war. A quarter of the population in Gaza is starving, according to the United Nations.
At the same time, Israel’s top military spokesperson suggested, for the first time publicly, that it has a plan to evacuate many of the more than 1 million Gazans who have fled to Rafah in southern Gaza. That plan, which the U.S. said it has not seen any details of yet, comes days after President Joe Biden said that he will send U.S. troops to create a temporary pier to deliver food into Gaza.
The United States has made a few airdrops of aid to Gaza, though aid organizations warn that there are more efficient, safer ways to get aid into the besieged Gaza Strip.

President Joe Biden in his March 7 State of the Union address said that he will be sending U.S. troops to create a temporary sea bridge to deliver food into the besieged Gaza Strip, while calling on Israel to do more to ease the suffering of civilians there.
But, humanitarian aid is still facing “every possible obstacle,” according to Ciaran Donnelly, Senior Vice President for Crisis, Response, Recovery and Development at the International Rescue Committee. He spoke with PBS NewsHour digital video producer Casey Kuhn on how aid is getting into the country, especially as malnutrition is creating a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where citizens are “more susceptible to disease.”
“And so in the unsanitary, overcrowded conditions that characterized many of the displacement sites, we're seeing high rates of skin infections, high rates of...
