- The power of 'small patterns'
- Date posted

- Description
- Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Charles Duhigg says "small patterns" can have a big impact on our lives.
"If you go and you run just 10 minutes today, you are 10 minutes healthier than if you had not run," he told PBS News' Amna Nawaz. "Not only that, but if you run 10 minutes today, next week it's gonna be a lot easier to run 15 minutes."
"It's important to give ourselves the grace to find the small patterns in our life because those small patterns compound," he added.
Duhigg, author of "The Power of Habit," sat down with Amna Nawaz for the latest episode of PBS News' podcast, "Settle In." He discussed how to make habits that actually stick and his newest book, "Supercommunicators."

- Description
- Correction: In the Venezuela segment, we mistakenly said "Marina" instead of "Maria" on first reference to Maria Corina Machado. The transcript has been corrected. In the Iran segment, an identifier graphic misspelled Stanford University. We regret the error.
Friday on the News Hour, the CIA director visits the president of Venezuela, while the opposition leader visits the U.S. and pushes for a democratic government. Restrictions are placed on Elon Musk's artificial intelligence program that was able to generate explicit images, but concerns remain. Plus, how Iran’s uprising met a crackdown and how a pledge of U.S. help seems to have gone unfulfilled.

- 26 charged in NCAA, Chinese basketball rigging scheme
- Date posted
- Description
- Federal prosecutors are charging 26 people for allegedly rigging NCAA and Chinese basketball association games; 15 of those charged played Division I basketball as recently as last season. The charges include wire fraud, bribery and conspiracy.
In a press conference Thursday, authorities said fixtures paid players up to $30,000 a game to deliberately underperform, then placed large bets against their teams. U.S. attorney David Metcalf says those involved "poisoned the American spirit of competition from monetary gain."
The indictment claims that fixers and players tried to rig 29 games across multiple seasons involving millions of dollars in bets. It comes after a series of NCAA investigations that have led to at least 10 players receiving lifetime bans.

- European troops arrive in Greenland amid Trump threats
- Date posted
- Description
- European troops began arriving in Greenland after talks in Washington failed to make progress on President Trump's push to take over the territory. Danish Air Force troops landed late Wednesday night, and NATO partners, including France, Germany and others, are sending small numbers of forces as well.
This comes after the Danish foreign minister set a fundamental disagreement over Greenland remains after meeting with American officials at the White House. Greenland residents say they are relieved to have the support from allies, but worry about what comes next.
The White House said Thursday that the presence of new European troops in Greenland would not affect President Trump's position on taking over the territory.

- Court reverses decision that freed Mahmoud Khalil
- Date posted

- Description
- A federal appeals court Thursday opened the possibility that Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil could be rearrested and possibly deported. The three-judge panel reversed a lower court decision that led to his release last June, saying it didn't have jurisdiction. They added that Khalil "will have to wait to seek relief from allegedly unlawful government conduct."
The former Columbia University graduate student is a permanent resident whose wife and son are American. His case became a high-profile example of the Trump administration's crackdown on pro-Palestinian activities on campus. His lawyers say they plan to appeal.

- What to know about the Insurrection Act #shorts
- Date posted
- Description
- President Donald Trump threatened Thursday to invoke the Insurrection Act in Minnesota as tensions rise over two shootings involving federal immigration agents.
The 1807 Insurrection Act allows a president to deploy the military to enforce the law, particularly in cases of rebellion or civil unrest. That could include making arrests or conducting searches.
Invoking the law would override the Posse Comitatus of 1878, which bars the military from getting involved in domestic law enforcement.
The act can be invoked in situations where a state’s governor or legislature requests the deployment of troops. It can also be used against state leaders’ wishes if the president thinks an “unlawful obstruction” or rebellion make it impossible to enforce federal law through the normal judicial process, or, if state leaders are unable or unwilling to protect residents’ constitutional rights.
