- Inside The Peninsula: London’s first billion-pound luxury hotel | Times Travel
- Date posted

- Description
- As Lui Chun boarded his Heathrow-bound plane in Hong Kong this month his fellow business-class passengers probably didn’t pay much attention to the unassuming gent in casual black suit and Nike trainers. How were they to know that the opening of London’s first billion-pound hotel rested on his say-so?
Chun is a seventh-generation feng shui master whose family has been guiding the great and the good for about 900 years. And since the builders broke ground on Hyde Park Corner in 2017, he has visited the UK several times to advise the site’s owner, the Hongkong & Shanghai Hotels, on the flow of energy through what is now the eight-storey Peninsula London hotel.
It is an example of the unmistakably Asian sensibility that filters through every aspect of a Peninsula property. This is one of the oldest hotel groups in the world, and probably the most stubborn — it spent 30 years looking for the perfect location for its London flagship, rejecting many addresse...

The preliminary death toll was confirmed by a health ministry spokesman, Saif al-Badr, but was later raised by other officials to 114, with warnings it could go higher. It is unclear if the bride and the groom were among the victims. Some guests claimed there were as many as 1,000 people in attendance.

- Philippine coastguard cuts Chinese fishing barrier amid rising tension
- Date posted
- Description
- The Philippine Coastguard said on September 25 that a “hazardous” floating barrier it said was installed by China was removed from an area of the South China Sea where it was “depriving” locals of “their fishing and livelihood activities.”
Writing on X, where a video of the operation was posted, spokesman Jay Tarriela said the “barrier posed a hazard to navigation,” was “a clear violation of international law,” and “also hindered the conduct of fishing and livelihood activities of Filipino fisherfolk in BDM, which is an integral part of the Philippine national territory.”
BDM refers to the disputed atoll of Bajo de Masinloc, known as Scarborough Shoal in English.
The coast guard said Sunday that the barrier was observed during a routine patrol on September 20, and that the subsequent removal operation was taken under presidential orders.

- LIVE: Suella Braverman sets out her case for a major immigration overhaul
- Date posted
- Description
- The home secretary will set out her case for a major overhaul of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, which has been signed by 146 countries and gradually incorporated into UK case law over the past seven decades.
Speaking in Washington at the American Enterprise Institute, a think tank, she will argue for a narrower definition of the term “refugee”. She will also say that the convention is outdated and “we now live in a completely different time”.
Braverman will warn that the way in which asylum seekers “shop around” for their “preferred destination” in Europe is “absurd and unsustainable” and that nobody who crosses the Channel in a small boat should be treated as a refugee.
Her comments are likely to put Britain on another collision course with the UNHCR, which governs the Refugee Convention and has already condemned the government over its Illegal Migration Act and policy to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda.

- Trudeau apologises after Nazi veteran given standing ovation in Canadian parliament
- Date posted

- Description
- Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau has said it is “deeply embarrassing” that a Ukrainian who allegedly served in a Nazi SS unit during the Second World War was honoured and given a standing ovation in the country’s parliament.
Yaroslav Hunka, 98, was introduced to parliamentarians on Friday as Ukraine’s President Zelensky addressed the chamber to thank Canada for supporting its fight against Russia.
However, it soon emerged that Hunka had allegedly served in the SS, leading to an outcry from Jewish groups and condemnation from the Kremlin. Anthony Rota, the Canadian House of Commons speaker, has apologised and accepted responsibility for the blunder, which Trudeau said was “clearly unacceptable”. “This is something that is deeply embarrassing to the parliament of Canada and by extension to all Canadians,” he told reporters on Monday.

- 'We’re still committed to levelling-up', insists Sunak as anger over HS2 grows
- Date posted

- Description
- Rishi Sunak has said it is “not just big rail projects” that contribute to levelling-up as he refused to commit to building HS2 to Manchester. The prime minister is understood to be looking at scrapping or delaying the northern leg of the line to cut costs, with the reallocation of money to other transport projects among the options said to be under consideration.
With Tory MPs urging him to press ahead with the full project, Sunak was asked this morning whether a high-speed line that stopped in Birmingham showed commitment to levelling up the north. George Osborne, the former chancellor, has told Sunak that scrapping HS2 to Manchester would be a “gross act of vandalism” and short-sightedness. Writing in The Times alongside Lord Heseltine, Osborne said the move would mean “abandoning” the north and Midlands and represent an “act of huge economic self-harm”.

- Human remains found clamped in the jaws of a 13-ft alligator in Florida have been identified as belonging to a 41-year-old woman. Authorities were called to a canal along a residential street in the city of Largo on Friday after a body was spotted in the grip of the alligator.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has now identified the victim as Sabrina Peckham, a local homeless woman who had been caught trespassing in the area in July. Peckham was fined $500 for entering county wetland about half a mile from where her body was found on Friday, court records show.
It is unclear if the alligator attacked Peckham or if it found her body in the water. Authorities said they “humanely killed” the reptile and removed it from the waterway.

- France will pull out its troops and recall its ambassador from Niger after a military coup in the west African country in July. President Macron not give a timeframe for the withdrawal of 1,500 French troops deployed in Niger to fight jihadists, but said they would leave “in an orderly manner” over the next few months, with full withdrawal “by the end of the year”. The military junta that ousted Mohamed Bazoum, the democratically elected president, had repeatedly demanded the departure of the French troops and the ambassador, but Macron stood firm until his concession on Sunday.
Macron noted that French forces were sent to Niger, a former French colony, in response to a request by its former government. He said France would continue to recognise Bazoum as “the sole legitimate authority”. He added that he had spoken to Bazoum earlier yesterday, although he was being “held hostage” by the coup leaders.

- Tens of thousands of Spaniards protested in Madrid yesterday against the prime minister’s bid to remain in power by granting an amnesty to Catalan separatists.
Opposition conservatives called the rally amid concerns that Pedro Sánchez’s proposal poses a threat to Spain’s unity. He is planning an amnesty for those involved in an illegal declaration of independence in 2017 in return for the support of Catalan separatists.
Sánchez needs the seven votes of the right-leaning Together for Catalonia party, led by Carles Puigdemont — still a fugitive living in Belgium — to be able to form a new government after an inconclusive general election in July left the country in political deadlock.
