- Description
- The smell of saffron reminds Mohammad Salehi of home. Heray Spice, Salehi’s fair trade business, imports saffron grown by farmers in Herat in western Afghanistan where he grew up.
Saffron, known as the world’s most expensive spice, lends its vibrant yellow hue to dishes such as paella, seafood and bouillabaisse. During Nowruz, the Persian New Year, many Afghans drink saffron tea and eat tahdig, a crispy rice dish with saffron, yogurt and butter. This year, Nowruz started on Mar. 20 and ends Apr. 2.
Salehi started Heray Spice in 2017 with half a pound of saffron from his relatives’ farms in Herat. Now it sources from nearly 300 farmers in Herat, employs eight in Afghanistan and six at its office near Lake View.

- Description
- The rally is part of a nationwide movement, dubbed “No Kings,” to protest President Donald Trump’s policies including mass deportations, the rollback of transgender rights and the war in Iran. The “No Kings” protests started last year to make the point that Trump has acted more like a despot rather than the leader of a democracy answerable to the public.
Across the Chicago area Saturday, many participants took their children to the rallies, pointing to the importance of teaching them to speak out. Although many expressed frustration with Trump, some said they took comfort in the solidarity surrounding them.

- Black Onyx Allstars, a nonprofit organization, was started in by Imani Cobb and Endigo Allen, former elementary school cheer teammates at Betty Shabazz Academy in Greater Grand Crossing. In 2023, the school asked them to hold a cheer clinic for a few months, then put on an exhibition. But that turned into coaching a cheer team for a full season, and by 2024, the two had decided to go independent, starting the nonprofit Black Onyx to expand access to cheer in the Black community.
“A lot of girls that look like us don’t even know that All Star cheer is something that’s an option for them because of the lack of resources and how underrepresented we are in those spaces,” Cobb said. “We’ve always just been kind of like the diamond in the rough.” At competitions, they’re usually the only mostly Black team. At most, they’re one of two, Cobb and Allen said.
Through fundraising, the nonprofit is able to pay for the larger costs including travel, lodgi...

- The Snowballs, which have no affiliation with the Banana League, take the field for their first game in front of paying customers on May 2 at Kerry Wood Cubs Field in Roscoe Village.
Tickets go on sale April 1 and will run $15 for kids 12 and under and $30 for everyone else, said Snowballs CEO Cherie Travis. She likens the team, which has no home field at the moment, to a traveling circus, with about 10 games a month scheduled through September at ballparks largely in the Chicago area but around the Midwest, too.
Travis got the idea to form the team after watching a television interview last year with Savannah Bananas owner Jesse Cole. She remembers thinking: “What a great way to spread joy in this world.” Travis, an attorney, real estate investor, adjunct professor at the DePaul College of Law and instructor at the Chicago Police Academy, is learning on the job with an undeniable excitement and energy for her new role.

Abughazaleh supporter Jessica Lui said the candidate “changed the conversation around what a Democrat can be.” Charles Douglas, executive director of the Seattle-based political action nonprofit Common Power, called her “an example for other candidates for the rest of the country.”
“There are progressives all over this country taking a chance just like we did, and we have to help them win no matter how hard it is,” Abughazaleh said.

It began with a commanding debate performance in January and was amplified by strong ads in the final weeks of the campaign. Stratton outperformed Krishnamoorthi in the Metro East region, Sangamon County, Chicago and some suburbs of Cook County — which took away any lead the congressman had in some collar counties. Stratton led Krishnamoorthi 39.7% to 33.4% with 85% of votes counted. U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly was in third with 18.4%.
Krishnamoorthi conceded about 9:30 p.m Tuesday.

“Our pączki are special because we make them fresh every day from scratch by hand, using a very old Polish recipe,” Niziołek said.
How many pączki are fried, and when, depends on the length of the line in the store. Here pączki never sit on display. Still warm, they are glazed with a mixture of lemon juice and powdered sugar, topped with orange zest, packed in boxes and taken straight to the customer.
The recipe comes from Niziołek’s mother. Niziołek first introduced it at Old Warsaw Buffet in Harwood Heights, where she started working in 1980.

- Chicago's ice-breaker boats keep the waterways flowing during winter
- Date posted

- Description
- How does Chicago keep its waterways flowing in freezing weather? A giant boat plows through the ice, shattering it apart, of course.
Since 1957, when the James J. Versluis first came into service, the ship’s primary job has been to clear the ice from around the city’s water intake “cribs,” each sitting two miles out into Lake Michigan. The massive cribs act like straws, sucking in water that then sloshes through tunnels — hand dug and dynamite blasted — beneath the lake bed to a water purification plant just north of Navy Pier and another at 79th and the lakefront. From there, the water is pumped to homes like yours and mine, about five million in all.
It is a near-constant winter battle to keep the ice from plugging up the crib openings some 20 feet below the surface of the lake. The water that deep doesn’t freeze, but the metal grates can get clogged with ice. When there’s ice on the lake, the Versluis is out every day.

- On Jan. 24, 17-year-old Ben Luhmann was behind the wheel with his 16-year-old brother Sam in the passenger seat, like they had been countless times before. As they drove through frigid Minneapolis to yet another scene where federal immigration agents had taken over the streets, their phones went off, alerting them of pepper spray being deployed.
Then another alert came through. Shots fired.
They pulled up to the scene, greeted by a swarm of federal agents, anguished neighbors and flashing lights. They were ready to record.
Sam asked someone on the scene if the person who was shot had died.
“He said, ‘There were so many shots,’” Sam recalled. “‘I don’t know how somebody would live through that.’”
The man was Alex Pretti.

- Woman shot 5 times by federal agent discusses her experience and the recent Minneapolis killings
- Date posted

- Description
- In a wide-ranging interview this week with the Chicago Sun-Times and WBEZ, Marimar Martinez discussed her shooting in Chicago, the federal government’s failed attempt to prosecute her and the role she now sees for herself in a fight for accountability.
Martinez is set to testify in Washington, D.C., in a public forum Tuesday about immigration agents’ use of force. She’s also expected to learn this week whether a judge will allow her to release evidence tied to her dropped prosecution, including an agent’s body-camera footage.

A Homeland Security spokesperson said Monday that it “stands by our press releases and statements. The facts of what happened did not change.”
