- Are the new US tariffs really intended to combat forced labor around the globe, as Washington claims? Or is it about the Trump administration asserting its power?
The United States has slapped new tariffs on 60 economies. After facing legal challenges to previous tariffs, the Trump administration is making use of a little-known law that allows it to impose levies on countries that buy products made by forced labor.
Simon J. Evenett, professor at IMD Business School, tells host Pablo Foley Elias that the forced labor explanation is a "contrivance." DW's Kassandra Sundt explains that the tariffs place a high burden on vulnerable countries to prove that they do not buy products made by forced labor.

- Description
- Cocaine is more widely available in Europe than ever before. Billions are generated by drug trade, cartels are growing stronger, and smuggling routes are becoming increasingly sophisticated. As law enforcement agencies sound the alarm, one critical question remains: Is Europe losing the fight against drug dealers?
From high-speed boats crossing the Atlantic to secret tunnels and so-called "cocaine taxis," criminal networks continue to evolve their methods. Record amounts of cocaine are entering Europe, fueling organized crime and putting growing pressure on police, customs officials, and governments across the continent.
Investigators and security experts have warned for years about the rising influence of drug cartels. Yet many fear the traffickers remain one step ahead of authorities. As a result, calls for tougher measures are growing louder. Inspired by policies discussed in the United States, some are even proposing that major ...

- UN report condemns Israeli military action in Gaza | DW News

- Description
- The UN Human Rights Office has condemned Israeli military action in the Gaza Strip. In a report issued on Tuesday, it said that dozens of Palestinians have been killed or injured in recent days. Gaza's civil defense agency and witnesses said Israeli strikes killed 12 people, including a family of six, in the Palestinian territory on Tuesday alone.
Despite a fragile ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, violence in the Gaza Strip hasn't stopped, and efforts to secure a lasting agreement to end the war have stalled.
Gaza's civil defense agency said one Israeli airstrike hit a house in central Gaza city on Tuesday. Witnesses said six members of the Al-Masri family - including four children - were killed. The Israeli military confirmed the strike, saying its target was a Hamas militant and that it's still looking into the result of the attack.
A brother of the man killed in the strike said he had been asleep in the next room when the hou...

- The US has signed a deal with Saudi Arabia to help the Kingdom develop a civilian nuclear program. The agreement may help Saudi Arabia one day use nuclear power to generate electricity. However, critics say the partnership lacks the protocols other US nuclear deals have, aimed at preventing uranium enrichment and the development of nuclear weapons. We consider what's at stake with Sina Azodi, Middle East analyst at George Washington University, and Kelsey Davenport, Director for Nonproliferation Policy at the Arms Control Association.

- Shipping crisis expands to Red Sea as Hormuz traffic stands still | DW News

- Description
- A fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran collapsed amid tensions over the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump is now warning that the US will destroy an Iranian bridge or power plant every time Iran attacks a ship in the strategic waterway. At the same time, threats from Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis are prompting some vessels to turn around rather than risk transiting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the southern end of the Red Sea. With two of the world's most important maritime chokepoints under pressure, fears are growing of wider disruption to global trade and energy supplies.

- The house in Austria where Adolf Hitler was born has been officially reopened - as a police station. The government says the move is meant to stop the building becoming a pilgrimage site for neo-Nazis. But the decision has divided opinion, with some arguing it should have been turned into a museum or center for historical education. The debate points to something larger: the continued need to remember history and confront the Nazi past.

- Germany approves joint venture with Russia's Rosatom despite Ukraine war | DW News

- Description
- Germany has cleared a controversial project involving Russia's state-owned company Rosatom, despite Western efforts to isolate Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine. The project would allow nuclear fuel rods for Soviet-designed reactors across Eastern Europe to be manufactured in Germany. Unlike Russia's oil and gas sectors, much of its nuclear industry remains outside EU sanctions because several member states still rely on Russian technology and fuel supplies.
