- 10 year anniversary of Russian annexation of Crimea | DW News
- Date posted
- Description
- It's now been 10 years since Russia illegally annexed Crimea following an invasion using troops without Russian uniforms. It was the beginning of a decade-long war with Ukraine – culminating in the full-scale invasion two years ago.
Its position on the Black Sea makes Crimea a strategically important asset. The peninsula serves as a key base for naval fleets and safeguards security interests in the region. Crimea is home to both ethnic Russians and Ukrainians – as well as indigenous Crimean Tatars and others.
Russia's annexation tactics there are being used to claim other territories in Ukraine.
Following the illegal annexation of Crimea, Russia made promises to improve the lives of the people living there. Ten years on the situation has deteriorated. Western sanctions have impacted the economy and Russia has been cracking on human rights. For the Ukrainian leadership and the Crimean Tatars, the liberation of Crimea remains imperative.

- Why did Putin feel he had to go through with this charade of an election? | DW News
- Date posted
- Description
- Russia's election commission says Vladimir Putin has been re-elected as president with 87% of the vote. The poll – held over the weekend – followed a crackdown on political opposition, leaving Mr Putin with no meaningful rivals for the post. This was one of the factors that led EU and US officials to describe the contest as neither free nor fair. In his victory speech, the Russian president said he would now focus on Ukraine – two years after a full-scale invasion that was expected to last only a few days.
For more on this, we talk to Professor Sergey Radchenko. He teaches at the Henry A Kissinger Center for Global Affairs at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He's written extensively on Russia – past and present.

- DISCLAIMER: THIS REPORT CONTAINS DISTURBING IMAGES
The UN Human Rights Council in Geneva is today wrapping up discussions with a fact-finding mission on Iran's violent repression of protests. The mission says it uncovered murders, torture, and forced disappearances that amount to crimes against humanity.
Investigators focused on Iran's response to mass protests over the death of Jina Mahsa Amini in 2022, who they say died from 'physical violence' while in custody.
Since then, women have continued to speak up. One woman who spoke out against authorities, has fled Iran and is now in Berlin seeking treatment for an eye injury she apparently suffered at the hands of Iranian security forces. She spoke to our reporter, Bamdad Esmaeili.
And for more on this, we talk to DW’s Niloofar Gholami, who is from Iran.

But there have been some instances of apparent protest: with voting stations reportedly set on fire, a molotov cocktail thrown at a polling station, and dye poured into ballot boxes. Moscow is especially concerned about generating a show of support for Vladimir Putin in the Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine. - What's behind the surge in kidnappings in Nigeria? DW News
- Date posted
- Description
- If you look to Nigeria in these days, you see a nation that is troubled - a country that seems to be suffering a twin curse: Prosperity has deserted it, and citizens are not safe as they go about whatever business they may still have.
Security and a means to make an honest living were key promises made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the campaign trail before he took office last May.
Less than a year later, his administration is overseeing an economy that's in tatters and a currency that has slid against the dollar, pushing the cost of imports up.
The one thing Nigeria has plenty of is the so-called bandits: criminal kidnappers by any other name. They struck again last week, seizing almost three hundred children and staff in the town of Kuriga in the troubled north. For the release of their captives, they're demanding one billion naira.

- How Xi Jinping’s authoritarianism is killing China’s economy | Business Beyond
- Date posted
- Description
- China’s economy has been flashing red on various fronts for the past few years. A severe property crisis and the struggle to emerge from strict pandemic restrictions are routinely blamed for problems ranging from deflation to sluggish growth. But in this episode of Business Beyond, we ask if there are more fundamental reasons behind the world’s second biggest economy’s malaise. Under Xi Jinping, the Chinese Communist Party has become more controlling than at any stage in the past four decades. Does authoritarianism place a cap on economic growth? In this episode we ask if Xi's desire for control at all costs is the main reason why so many people, both within China and outside of it, have lost faith in a global economic powerhouse’s capacity to bounce back.

- Ousmane Sonko, Senegal's opposition head, released before election | DW News
- Date posted
- Description
- Senegal opposition supporters celebrated in the streets after their leaders were freed.
Ousmane Sonko was released from jail late Thursday ahead of the country's presidential contest, his lawyer said.
Sonko had fought a long legal battle to contest the election, which is scheduled for March 24, but was ultimately barred from running.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who was also released from prison along with Sonko, was instead named as the opposition's election candidate.
Ousmane Sonko, who had long been seen as the main opponent of President Macky Sall, was sentenced to two years in prison last summer after a court found him guilty for "corrupting youth."
His sentencing triggered deadly clashes in Senegal, with supporters, often young people, taking to the streets across the country and facing off with security officers.

- Malaysian PM defends Hamas, condemns West 'hypocrisy' | DW News
- Date posted
- Description
- Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has spoken out about what he called Western "hypocrisy" over the war in Gaza compared to attitudes to Ukraine. Speaking to DW's Richard Walker in Berlin, Anwar slammed Western countries such as Germany for in his view failing to use their influence to make Israel halt the fighting. He argued that Hamas's unprecedented terror attacks of October 7th 2023 were "understandable" in the context of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
This extensive interview explores the deepening divisions in global attitudes to the Middle East Conflict. The West broadly rallied to Israel's side after Hamas killed more than 1,000 people and kidnapped hundreds on October 7th. But as casualties in Gaza have mounted even higher, that unity has fractured, and many in the Global South have voiced anger over perceptions that the West is indifferent to civilian suffering on the Palestinian side. Anwar Ibrahim expresses this anger – and goes on to ...
