- Why is rainfall hard to forecast?
- Runtime
- 2:03
- Date posted
- Description
- Rainfall is one of the most important things we forecast for the Australian community.
But it’s also one of the hardest to accurately and consistently predict.
Our meteorologists use a range of weather models to forecast areas where rain is possible, and the timing for that rain.
This range of weather models, typically run on supercomputers in the bureau and by our international partners, produce the forecast rainfall and a measure of the uncertainty in the forecast.
In some weather situations, we can forecast rain with a high level of accuracy. But at other times, knowing exactly when and where the rain will fall can be less certain.
Watch Senior Meteorologist Angus Hines explain why rainfall is particularly complex to forecast.

- What is 'feels like' temperature?
- Runtime
- 1:10
- Date posted
- Description
- If you're in south-east Australia, you'll notice it feels a lot colder outside than what's showing on the thermometer.
That's because cold, gusty winds are bringing down the 'feels-like', or apparent temperature.
The feels-like temperature takes into account wind and humidity to calculate how an average person would feel outside in the elements.
Today in Melbourne, the air temperature at lunchtime was 15°C. However, with strong winds, the feels-like temperature was closer to 8°C.
Similarly in Adelaide, the feels-like temperature has been hovering around 10°C for most of Tuesday afternoon, despite the air temperature being 14°C.
And at Thredbo Top Station in New South Wales, at an elevation of 1957m, the feels-like temperature was -22.9°C on Tuesday morning, with the actual temperature at -3.3°C.
The strong winds are due to a cold front making its way across the region. Northerly winds ahead of the w...
