The justices condemned what happened to the former inmate, Damon Landor. But they ruled that a federal law designed to protect the religious rights of inmates does not permit lawsuits for money damages even when rights are violated.
The high court agreed with lower courts that without exception had ruled that the law, the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, can't be used to hold those who violate inmates' rights financially responsible.

- Description
- Bill Pulte took over as acting Director of National Intelligence on Friday, replacing Tulsi Gabbard. The transition comes as Jay Clayton's nomination for a permanent replacement stalls — President Trump canceled Clayton's Senate confirmation hearing with no new date scheduled. Bipartisan lawmakers question whether Pulte meets the legal requirement of significant national security experience for the role. Some Republicans believe Trump appointed Pulte specifically to shrink the size and scope of the nation's intelligence community, which oversees 18 agencies.

- Former New Mexico Attorney General says he was sidelined by feds from probe into Epstein’s ranch

- Description
- Former New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas says his 2019 investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s activities at Zorro Ranch was abruptly halted after federal officials asked him to pause so they could take the lead. Balderas agreed, expecting coordination, but records show the FBI never searched the New Mexico property and federal prosecutors later abandoned the case without notifying him.
Emails reveal internal FBI concerns about the lack of a search, yet federal authorities claimed they lacked probable cause. Balderas found this “alarming,” saying his office could have helped secure a warrant and offered repeated assistance — but never heard back. He believes key evidence may have been lost and describes the experience as “early signs of a cover-up.” Years later, New Mexico’s current attorney general still has not received unredacted DOJ files on Zorro Ranch.

- Description
- Today as it Happened on Thursday, June 18, 2026:
Vice President JD Vance on Thursday defended the memorandum of understanding signed by President Donald Trump and Iran, arguing the agreement benefits the United States whether Tehran ultimately complies with its terms or not.
"Their nuclear program has been completely destroyed," Vance said during a White House briefing. "Their capacity for enrichment facilities ... those facilities are still destroyed. Their conventional military is still destroyed. Their capacity to threaten their neighbors is largely gone."
Trump signed the deal in France on Wednesday, and Vance said it was already producing results, pointing to lower oil prices and increased shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Ukraine hit the Moscow Oil Refinery for the second time in a week early Thursday — one of its biggest drone attacks since Russia's full-scale invasion began more than four years ago. Massive fires raged ...

- 'Worst foreign policy blunder in decades': Trump's Iran deal faces bipartisan pushback in Congress

- Description
- President Trump is lashing out at critics of the U.S.-Iran deal, saying the "fools" are "either jealous, bad people or stupid."
But both Democrats and Republicans have expressed concerns about the agreement. Republican Senator Bill Cassidy calls the deal "the worst foreign policy blunder in decades." He wrote on X that Iran's nuclear ambitions have not been curbed, 13 American service members are dead and families have paid billions at the pump.
A number of Republicans have expressed support for the deal and for the president, but a bipartisan coalition is developing that has serious issues with the agreement.
"You know, I've heard about it, causes me concern. I'm interested in learning more about it. But I think it's certainly a mixed bag best," said Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX). "I think some important things have been accomplished, but I'm afraid we'll look back on this and see a missed opportunity to basically eliminate the threat going forward."

- Thursday was a day of celebration on the South Side of Chicago, the dedication ceremony for the Obama Presidential Center and a full circle moment for Barack Obama, where he got his political start.
"And it was here in this city, a city of broad shoulders, that I found what I was looking for," Obama said in remarks during the ceremony.
It was part homecoming and part long time coming for former President Barack Obama on Thursday as he helped dedicate his presidential center in Chicago, a moment that was years in the making.
The 19-acre campus features a towering museum with exhibits on American history and Obama's presidency, a regulation-sized basketball court, a new Chicago public library, and more. Now the 44th president hopes the space will help serve and educate the community for years into the future.
"We wanted it to be a vibrant, living celebration of community where we can learn together and share the joys of art and music an...

- Scripps News Senior International Correspondent Jason Bellini reports on Ukraine's largest drone offensive on Moscow since Russia's full-scale invasion began — striking the capital's main oil refinery for the second time in one week, nine miles from the Kremlin. President Zelenskyy, heading to Brussels for NATO talks, called it direct retaliation for Russia's missile strike on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, one of Orthodox Christianity's holiest sites. "If Ukraine burns," he warned, "your Moscow will burn as well." The math is shifting. And so is the geography of fear.

- Description
- Vice President JD Vance says the U.S. Navy has lifted its blockade on Iranian ports by allowing more than a dozen ships to pass through. Vance gave the update Thursday at a White House news briefing, where he also said the greatest amount of oil since the war began is now flowing through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to details released by both countries, President Donald Trump has signed an agreement with Iran that calls for Tehran to dilute its stockpile of highly enriched uranium and waives U.S.-backed sanctions on the country, immediately allowing Iran to sell its oil freely in a major concession from Washington.

- Description
- The Supreme Court unanimously ruled that unlawful drug users can legally possess firearms, striking down parts of a 1986 federal ban. The case involved Ali Danial Hemani, who admitted to regularly using marijuana and cocaine and was charged under the Firearms Owners’ Protection Act. Lower courts found the law unconstitutional, and justices upheld those rulings, rejecting the Trump administration’s appeal.
