- The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has arrested and repatriated 52-year-old Festus Ibewuike, also known as Chidibest Ibewuike, a suspected drug kingpin who had been on the run for more than two years. Ibewuike was arrested at an airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on September 2, 2026, following intelligence-led operations and collaboration with INTERPOL. He was subsequently handed over to NDLEA operatives and returned to Nigeria.
The suspect had been declared wanted following the interception of 49.70 kilogrammes of heroin at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, in February 2024. The NDLEA described the seizure as the largest single heroin consignment recorded at the airport. The agency said Ibewuike had relocated to Mozambique, where he allegedly operated a hotel business as a front while moving between Mozambique and Nigeria through Benin Republic to evade arrest.
