Venezuelans took the search for missing loved ones into their own hands Friday in the aftermath of back-to-back earthquakes, citing the scarcity of government rescuers, as the human toll of the disaster climbed to at least 920 dead and more than 3,300 hurt.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez announced the new toll early Friday, surrounded by government and military officials as she welcomed the arrival of rescue crews from all over the world.
“We are going to rescue the people who are trapped,” she said. “We are working tirelessly on this task.”
She said the state of La Guaira has been hardest hit by the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck Wednesday evening, noting that it has been militarized as crews search for survivors and distribute food and water.

- In the 10 days since the U.S. signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, there's been some relief at the pump.
The national average for a gallon of gas now sits at $3.90.
That drop comes as the price of Brent crude oil has fallen significantly since the ceasefire was extended, but gas prices are not falling as quickly.
Experts say prices are unlikely to return to pre-war levels until next year at the earliest.
“It's not a light switch, it's not going to happen overnight,” said gGasBuddy's Patrick De Haan. “We'll see lower prices, but we probably won't see pre-war prices until potentially early 2027.”
According to De Haan, it’s likely to take weeks for shipments through the strait to return to pre-war frequencies, and it could take months for oil reserves to be replenished.

The U.S. is promising aid, including search and rescue teams from Virginia and California. But just getting them into Venezuela could be a challenge. The country's main airport was hit hard.
The Trump administration is offering access to other landing zones via the U.S. military. It planned to send search and rescue teams, airlift support and at least $150 million in immediate support funds for local relief organizations.
