Cuba says it is ready to engage the United States on equal terms, as more than six decades of sanctions have drained over two trillion U.S. dollars from its economy, with severe life consequences for its citizens.
This was said by Cuban Ambassador to Namibia, Sergio Vigoa, at the launch of the Namibia National Solidarity Campaign in support of Cuba in Windhoek on Wednesday.
At the event, government officials reaffirmed Namibia and Cuba’s historic bond forged during the liberation struggle, and is now sustained through ongoing cooperation in health, education and development.
Vigoa said decades of sanctions continue to choke Cuba’s access to food, medicine, fuel, finance as well as electricity.

A Windhoek newspaper vendor, Eliaser Fillemon, says the late parliamentarian James Uerikua, was his client who regularly bought newspapers from him in Windhoek’s Dorado Park.
Fillemon, who stands at the circle in Dorado Park, said he only learned about Uerikua’s and his son passing on Tuesday, explaining that he was offline the whole weekend as he did not have data.
Fillemon described Uerikua as a good-hearted man who would have small chats with him and sometimes gave him extra money, even though he only purchased three newspapers.
He said he last saw Uerikua on Thursday, which is the day before he passed away in a road traffic accident.

The Khomas Region’s Head of the Crime Investigation Division, Deputy Commissioner Fredrik Ndjadila, says police have launched a high-level investigation into the disappearance of Beatus Iiyambo, who went missing two months ago after travelling from the Omusati Region to Windhoek for work.
The police incorporated sniffer dogs as well as checking Iiyambo’s last cellphone connectivity.

The newly appointed head of the Tourism Protection Sub-Division, Chief Inspector Christina van Dunem daFonsech-Shikongo, has started strong in her new role, saying five cases have been registered and six suspects arrested last week in connection with criminal activities targeting tourists.
DaFonsech-Shikongo, also known as Fonseca, said two accused were denied bail.
The tourist division last week impounded two vehicles used in the commission of crime, including a blue Polo Vivo.
Da Fonsech- Shikongo said the lawful vehicle owner had given his car to a certain individual to be sold, but it was instead used to rob tourists. She said the police recovered a cellphone stolen from the tourists.
In this case, she said two suspects were arrested while one remains at large. They appeared in court and were granted N$3 000 bail.

Agriculture Minister Inge Zaamwani warned farmers not to privately import or use Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines on their own because this could cause the whole country to lose its FMD-free without vaccination status.
Zaamwani said only government is authorised to import and use the vaccine, and any farmer found in possession of it without approval would be breaking the law.

Deputy minister of fisheries, Ruthy Masake, says the emerging Atlantic salmon aquaculture sector could transform Namibia from wild-capture fisheries to high-value aquaculture and agro-processing.

Former Air Namibia employees have called on the Supreme Court to compel the defunct airline’s liquidators to pay their outstanding severance packages.
Handing over a petition on behalf of the former employees on Tuesday to the Chief Justice of the High and Supreme Courts, Renier Bougard said they had learned that one employee recently received payment, which demonstrates that funds are available.
This comes as more than 600 former employees continue to wait for their full payouts, nearly two years after the High Court ordered the liquidators to compensate them.
