NIDA spokesperson, Wessel !Nanuseb, says the outstanding electricity bill currently amounts to N$2.8 million, while water stands at N$1.4 million.

A new direct flight route between Namibia and Zambia is expected to strengthen tourism ties and boost regional travel when it launches in March this year.
The route, operated by Proflight Zambia, will connect Windhoek and Lusaka, with a short stopover in Livingstone.
Announced on Thursday in Windhoek by the Namibia Tourism Board, the new air route will operate three times a week, on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, offering visitors a faster and more convenient travel option between the two countries.
According to Proflight Zambia’s Director of Flight Operations, Josias Walubita, the total travel time between Lusaka and Windhoek will be just under three hours.
Improved air connectivity is seen as a major driver for tourism growth, supporting tour operators, hospitality businesses and regional travel circuits.

Agriculture ministry is in the process of finalising a contract with a private company that has expressed interest in operating the Uvungu-Vungu dairy project in Kavango East.

The Environmental Investment Fund and agriculture ministry have delivered safe, potable water to over 1 000 rural households nationally costing N$40 million.
EIF spokesperson, Romeo Muyunda, said the project upgraded 17 boreholes across several regions including Karas, Kunene, Ohangwena, Kavango East, Kavango West, Zambezi, and Oshikoto.
He said communities in the services areas have long been battling with access to clean water for domestic use as well as for their livestock, and small-scale farming.
Muyunda said the project also trained 69 water point committee members and regional officials to operate and maintain the systems and created 127 temporary jobs during the construction phase.
He said some sites still need commissioning due to outstanding connections and equipment replacements, adding the planning and design phase ensures the systems can be fully operational soon.

Omaheke Regional Head of Community Policing, Chief Inspector Fina Sakajengenga, says the boy accused of killing 26-year-old Nacky Menatzick and her three-year-old daughter, Delanie Menatzick, on 9 January in Epako, Gobabis, was visiting his uncle’s house for the holiday when the incident occurred.
She told NewsOnOne that police have since confirmed the minor is 15 years old, not 13 as initially reported, and that he remains in custody as investigations continue.
According to Sakajengenga, investigations revealed that the 15-year-old suspect had gone to his uncle’s house, where the incident took place, to stay for the holiday.
She said that both his parents reside in Epako, Gobabis.

Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, has defended the decision to ban and fine Intercape Namibia for transporting passengers within the country using foreign-registered vehicles during the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
As a result, the public transport operator was fined N$4 000 for operating at least nine buses.
They were also ordered to immediately cease operations for violating Section 70(3) of the Roads Traffic and Transport Act of 1999, which prohibits cabotage operations without a valid cross-border permit.

The environment ministry is drafting new regulations that will see illegal sand and gravel miners face heavy fines, prosecution, equipment seizures and possible jail time, aimed at curbing illegal mining and enforcing compliance.
Environment Commissioner Timoteus Mufeti said there will be stakeholder consultations across several regions from 19 January to 4 February on the draft Environmental Management Amendment Bill, and proposed sand and gravel mining regulations.
Responding to questions by NewsOnOne, Mufeti said the draft rules will also require mandatory fencing and rehabilitation of pits, proper payment systems, and stricter checks on trucks transporting sand without valid permits.
Mufeti said the new regulations are needed as uncontrolled sand mining has caused deaths, destroyed infrastructure, and sparked conflicts between communities, leaders, and operators due to widespread non-compliance.

A family member of one of the six Namibian youths arrested in Myanmar, Dr. Bernard Haufiku, says the Malaysian embassy says the youngsters were coerced by a syndicate with a promise to work in Thailand, only to end up in Myanmar where they were to be used as agents to scam people.
Haufiku told NewsOnOne however the youngsters were well aware of the risks and deliberately avoided keeping their exact locations known.
“I tried on behalf of the family when Immanuel’s brother told me that Immanuel was apparently leaving for Thailand, but by the time he told me, Immanuel had already boarded the plane from South Africa. I tried his number several times, but he wouldn’t pick up. One of the staff members at the Namibian Embassy in Malaysia, who was dealing with them, told me that Immanuel instructed her not to tell me where he was. They were very difficult to reach, moving from place to place, disappearing before they were arrested...
