- On Wednesday, 24 June evening, two massive earthquakes, magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 hit approximately 160 km west of Caracas. The second tremor was the strongest recorded since 1900.
The quakes devastated Caracas and surrounding areas, particularly the coastal state of La Guaira.
The government reports 920 dead, 3,360 injured, 172 trapped, and over 50,000 missing.
The disaster displaced 3,007 people and destroyed or severely damaged 383 buildings, along with 13 hospitals, 25 shopping centers, and 1,002 other structures.
Local and international teams are racing to find survivors beneath the rubble, though a lack of heavy equipment is hindering efforts as fatalities approach 1,000.

The grief, panic and anguish extend far from the earthquake's epicenter in La Guaira, Northern Venezuela, with more than eight million Venezuelans living outside their homeland.
Some of the 200,000 ex-pats who live in Madrid are gathered at the city’s Venezuelan consulate, anxiously awaiting news of loved ones, sharing information, and offering support to one another. Others are trying to organize collections of basic necessities like food and clothing to send home.

Across Germany, homeowners are retrofitting traditional homes with solar panels, smart ventilation, green roofs and heat pumps that can both heat and cool a building.
Nearly three-quarters of new homes completed in 2025 installed heat pumps as their primary heating system, and Germany now has close to five million solar installations nationwide.
"We've moved from oil and gas heating to the increasingly common heat pump," said Lars Kraus, CEO of Munich-based firm Greengineers. "It transfers heat rather than generating it – so it can be used to cool buildings too."
For many Germans, says CGTN’s Natalie Carney, it's becoming less of an environmental choice and more of a practical one.
