- Ottawa has made a decision to negotiate a major defence purchase and it’s not with the U.S.
It’s called GlobalEye, an advanced aerial surveillance system developed in Sweden that uses Canadian-made jets.
Former Air Force general and chief of the defence staff, Tom Lawson, says while he doesn’t agree with the decision, he does think diversifying Canada's defence investments is a step in the right direction.
Lawson explains why he has concerns about this surveillance system, especially for use in the north.

- Researchers at the New York Aquarium in New York City have set up a two-way mirror to deepen their understanding of beluga whales.
They've observed ‘Natasha’ and her daughter ‘Maris’ displaying previously unobserved behaviours that appear to show self-awareness, such as studying their marshmallow-like faces and inspecting their teeth.
Scientists say the ability to recognize one’s self is a unique trait in nature, typically found in species that are intelligent, social and empathetic, such as humans.

Some residents of at-risk areas feel the rising water levels are getting a little to close for comfort and recalling the devastating floods of 2013.
But officials say we aren’t there yet with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith saying, “We’re watching it this weekend, but at the moment there’s not the level of risk like we would have had in 2013.”

The report contains figures that show for the second quarter in a row Canada’s economic growth has faltered, with the annualized rate falling 0.1 per cent.
“If this does end up being graded a recession, I'd say it's about a category one. It's very, very mild downturn.” BMO Economist Douglas Porter said.
