Amin Yousefijam, a former Tehran police lieutenant living in Toronto under a new name, is being deported for his “important and critical role” in a crime group that helped Iran evade sanctions.
The Immigration and Refugee Board ruled that Yousefijam was “crucial” to the sanctions-dodging scheme, according to a copy of the 36-page decision released to Global News on Tuesday.
“Yousefijam is a member of an organization that engaged in criminal activity that directly contravened sanctions imposed by Canada and the U.S.A. against the export of certain items to Iran... I issue a deportation order against him," IRB Member Christopher Marcinkiewicz wrote.

Durham police said the incident happened at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Police announced at an afternoon news conference that the children were walking in the area of Ryerson Crescent and Sheridan Way with a daycare worker when they were all struck. The daycare worker, a woman, has also been taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

- The community of Wainwright and the families of those involved are still coming to terms with the tragedy that unfolded at CFB Wainwright on Saturday.
Minister of Defence David McGuinty announced Tuesday that some of the injured Canadian Armed Forces members have been released, with 33 of the 39 still in hospitals across Alberta.
Global News has also obtained internal memos showing the military's fire protocols and analysis of fire risk at the rural Alberta military training base at the time.
"It's very difficult to provide advice on the merits of how the protocols which are in place ought to be amended, until we get the facts," McGuinty said.

- The multi-jurisdictional measles outbreak which has swept across the country for roughly two years is officially over.
Because there have been no new infections, the outbreak, which started in October of 2024, was declared over by the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Dr Navarro with Public Health Ontario reacted to the news, saying, "It is a big deal, and it was; I felt a sense of relief."
In the end, more than 6,400 cases were reported across 10 provinces and territories, with the majority of cases occurring in people who had not been vaccinated against the highly contagious disease.
"We do have some increase in vaccine hesitancy following the pandemic. However, the outbreak occurred predominantly in populations that are historically under-vaccinated," Dr. Navarro said.

- U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday announced a $25 million program to encourage the public to blow the whistle on suspected fraud in the U.S. government as they ramp up efforts to end the abuse of federal programs and dollars.
The White House said that under the 'Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program,' or WHIP, anyone who submits a tip that leads to a fraud conviction, or a significant federal enforcement action, is eligible to receive up to $30,000, and that the Justice Department will administer the program.
During the announcement, Trump said payments will work out to a one per cent commission on the dollar amount of fraud the tip helps uncover. Trump also said he will decide who gets to collect reward money in cases where more than one person claims to have provided the tip.
“I will be the arbitrator of all these decisions,” Trump said during the Oval Office event. “It'll be a binding arbitration.”

- When Dona Wilkie drove her 2021 Toyota Highlander on a recent trip to Calgary this past August to drop off her son at university, she expected a smooth ride.
Instead, the B.C. resident says she experienced aggressive gear changes and a strange noise coming from her vehicle. “As I was pressing the accelerator, it would whine. At first, quite low. It was like a humming and then it got louder as the trip went on,” said Wilkie.
Wilkie says she contacted her Toyota dealership as soon as she arrived home, only to receive shocking news.
Her Highlander, which she had purchased brand new, needed a new transmission. “I was shocked,” said Wilkie.
Making matters worse, Wilkie says she was informed by the dealership that she was 600 kilometres over the 100,000 kilometres powertrain warranty and she’d have to pay for the transmission out of pocket.
