- Canada's extreme weather events costing billions, but what can be done?
- Date posted

- Description
- Canada continues to see extreme weather events and wildfires at an increasing rate and with more severity— and it's leading to rising costs for both Canadians and insurers.
New data from Statistics Canada shows that from 1983 until 2008, insurers spent $400 million annually on average, but since 2009 that number has shot up to about $2 billion each year.
As Sean Previl explains, climate and insurance experts say it's unlikely to change anytime soon but there are things Canadians and insurers can do to help mitigate costs.

The collision comes amid heightened concerns in the U.S. about the vulnerability of bridges after a cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in March, killing six people and resulting in its collapse.

- France declared a state of emergency in New Caledonia on Wednesday after lawmakers in Paris voted in favour of a bill allowing French residents who have lived in the territory to vote in provincial elections, prompting deadly riots in the region.
Government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot said the declaration, which will come into force at 8 p.m., was “precisely to bring back calm and serenity.”
The unrest in New Caledonia resulted in the deaths of three young Indigenous Kanak, according to one official.
Supporters of New Caledonia’s independence fear the move allowing residents to vote in provincial elections will dilute the vote of Indigenous Kanak.

Russia has been pushing Ukrainian forces back at key points along the front line in recent months, despite hundreds of billions of dollars worth of aid from the United States and its allies.
During a meeting at the Kremlin with Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Secretary of the Security Council Sergei Shoigu and top generals, Putin said the work of the military was "proceeding according to the plan" approved by the General Staff.

- Description
- Alberta Premier Danielle Smith held a press conference on Wednesday, providing an update on the province's intensifying wildfire situation, particularly in the Fort McMurray, Alta., area, adding that she's "prepared to do whatever is necessary" to ensure people's safety.
On Tuesday, roughly 6,600 residents of Fort McMurray, Alta., were told they must leave their homes by 4 p.m., as a wildfire rages south of the community — triggering memories of the devastating fire eight years ago. On Wednesday, it was revealed the fire is now classified as "out-of-control" and has burned at least 20,000 hectares of land.
"It's important that everyone knows that we are prepared to do whatever is necessary to keep everyone safe. This evacuation is a stark reminder that our province lives alongside the threat of wildfires and other national disasters. And let me assure you, our government will have Alberta's back whenever a disaster strikes," Smith said in her opening remark...

- Buckingham Palace unveiled its first official portrait on Tuesday of King Charles III since his coronation. While the monarch and his wife, Queen Camilla, were seemingly happy with the piece of art, the result has divided the public.
The painting, crafted by British artist Jonathan Yeo, depicts King Charles wearing the uniform of the Welsh guards against a fiery red background. It includes a butterfly about to land on his shoulder. The King, himself, congratulated Yeo on his "fantastic" piece.
Some have said the King looks like he is about to be swallowed by fire in the piece, while others have dubbed it “nightmarish” and “satanic.”
“It's kind of ghoulish. I think he might be a more attractive person in a photograph, I guess,” a London park-goer named Sarah told reporters on Tuesday.
“I think it’s nice, it’s different to what you’d see normally in a royal portrait. It’s a bit more modern, I would say,” said ano...

- BC court rules health officer justified in extending COVID vaccine mandate for health-care workers
- Date posted

- Description
- A B.C. Supreme Court judge has ruled provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry was justified in extending a vaccine mandate for health-care workers last fall.
Fifteen health-care workers appealed to have the public health order dismissed on constitutional and other grounds.
Among other things, they claimed COVID-19 was no longer a significant risk to public health and there was no medical evidence that unvaccinated health-care workers posed a greater risk to vulnerable patients.
Justice Simon Coval ruled that while the orders did violate Charter Guarantees of Conscience and Religion, the infringement was reasonable to protect public health.

- Injured Palestinians in Gaza are desperate for the border crossing in Rafah to reopen so they can access medical care amid Israel's war with Hamas.
Ni'ma Ali Imad is desperate to get her wounded son Mohammed out of Gaza for the medical treatment that doctors say they cannot provide in the Palestinian enclave. Five-year-old Mohammed lost his sight and suffered a head wound during Israeli shelling. But, like many other wounded Palestinians, he is stuck in a Gaza hospital waiting, because the Rafah crossing on the border with Egypt is closed.
The closure has not only left foreign aid piling up on the Egyptian side of the border as a humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens. It has also shut down a vital evacuation route for people in Gaza needing urgent medical care abroad.
Gaza's medical system has virtually collapsed under Israel's bombardment, witnesses say, and Palestinian doctors say they are not equipped to help Mohammed Imad regain his sight and...

- Shopping for a new car? Canadians looking for a new set of wheels could find some price relief
- Date posted
- Description
- Canadians shopping for a new vehicle this spring or summer may find a bit of relief from pandemic-era supply shortages and high prices.
Experts say there are signs of “normality” on dealership lots after disruptions to automotive supply chains left some customers waiting months for new vehicles or competing for scarce stock at high prices in the normally affordable used vehicle markets.
However, despite signs of normalization in the market, some experts say inventories aren’t equal across all models and automakers.
Anne Gaviola has more on the shift in the market and where to find the best deals.

- Canada’s economy is “strong, resilient” according to credit rating agency: Freeland
- Date posted
- Description
- Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said during a press conference in Lunenburg County, N.S., on Tuesday that inflation is expected to be nearing the Bank of Canada’s midpoint target of two per cent, according to a report last month.
Referencing the report from credit rating agency Moody’s, Freeland said the organization reaffirmed the prediction of a stable outlook for Canada and predicted stronger economic growth than some other triple AAA economies in the medium term.
“These are really powerful economic proof points. What they say is that Canada’s economy is strong and resilient,” Freeland said. “And that really matters, because it means we can afford to make the investments Canada needs.”
“The reality is [that] what the federal Conservative Party stands for is austerity and cuts,” Freeland added. “Our government knows now is the time we need to invest – we need to invest in housing, we need to invest in making life...

- Description
- At least eight people have died and eight more have been critically injured in Ocala, Fla. after a retired school bus carrying 53 migrant workers collided with an oncoming pickup truck and overturned in a nearby field early Tuesday morning, according to Marion County authorities.
During a press conference, Lt. Pat Riordan of the Florida Highway Patrol said the bus sideswiped a 2001 Ford Ranger, before veering off the road, hitting a fence and then overturning.
“My understanding [is that] they were farm workers, and they were en-route to a farm in the area,” Lt. Riordan said. “The status of those folks… I do not have all that information,” he added.
Along with the critically-injured passengers, the remaining 37 were rushed to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
A traffic homicide investigation is ongoing and Lt. Riordan estimates that it will take roughly six months to “conclude factually what transpired....

- Georgia passes "foreign agents" bill: Lawmakers brawl, protesters clash at parliament
- Date posted

- Description
- Georgian lawmakers passed the third and final reading of the country’s “foreign agents” bill on Tuesday, prompting physical scuffles in parliament. Despite heavy parliamentary opposition and nationwide protests against the legislation, it passed with 84 out of 150 members voting in favour.
The bill requires organizations receiving more than 20 per cent of their funding from abroad to register as foreign agents or, alternatively, face fines.
Tuesday’s result puts the legislation one step closer to becoming law, triggering protesters to clash with police outside of parliament in Tbilisi.
“We don't have much to lose,” student protester Keti Marchavariani said outside of Georgian Parliament on Tuesday. “So, the protests are still going to happen and we're still going to stand here until the government hears our voice. Or we're going to overthrow them,” she added with a chuckle.

- Argentina prices continue to climb despite slowing monthly inflation
- Date posted
- Description
- Argentina prices are continuing to climb, despite some signs of deceleration, with the embattled South American country's annual inflation rate set to edge closer to 300 per cent.
For fruit and vegetable seller in Buenos Aires, Sandra Boluch, even though there are comments on the inflation rate going down, the benefits are not being felt.
"We feel this much more and we hope that this huge crisis will help, that our sacrifice will serve a purpose and that we will get out of this," one shopper said.
The government of libertarian President Javier Milei, which inherited a major economic crisis, has touted its success in lowering monthly inflation, which has declined this year since Milei took office on Dec. 10, and sharply devalued the local peso currency, unleashing an initial inflation surge.

- Description
- The number of people killed by flash floods and mud slides in Indonesia's West Sumatra province has risen to at least 50, and more than 3,000 people have been evacuated, authorities said on Tuesday, with heavy rains expected until next week.
"Of course, this data will continue to grow when those who are missing are found dead, and other bodies are found," the country's head of disaster mitigation agency Suharyanto, who goes by one name, said during an assessment of affected areas.
Torrential rain on Saturday evening triggered flash floods, landslides, and cold lava flow - a mud-like mixture of volcanic ash, rock debris and water - in three districts in West Sumatra province.
"Suddenly the lights went out and the water rushed in, I didn't have time to stand up, and I no longer had time to run and was just washed away by the flood," said 23-year-old flood survivor Roza Yolanda.
