Statistics Canada said Friday that GDP in the first quarter of 2026 fell 0.1 per cent on an annualized rate, and follows a revised one per cent annualized decline in the fourth quarter of 2025. A technical recession is most commonly defined as two consecutive quarters with negative economic growth.
On a quarter-over-quarter basis, the agency says growth was essentially unchanged, but small movements in quarterly figures are magnified when converted into annualized rates. Real GDP declined last October and in March, but growth was either flat or positive in the four months in between.

Oil prices plunged and markets stabilized Thursday after U.S. officials say a 60-day memorandum of understanding had been reached that could extend the ceasefire and work as an agreement to discuss a long-term solution.
Meanwhile, Iran will also need approval from its senior leadership, which has repeatedly pushed back on any attempts to curb its nuclear ambitions. Reopening the Strait of Hormuz is another critical component in the peace talks.
“It's going to take weeks, if not months before we start to see a harmonized flow, pre-war flow coming in and out of the Hormuz,” USC Marshall Nick Vyas said.
As Reggie Cecchini reports, an overnight exchange of fire between the U.S. and Iran doesn’t appear to have made an impact on negotiations.

- Description
- The Supreme Court of Canada has upheld a ruling that Aboriginal title cannot be declared over private land, in a decision the federal government says will have an impact on the Cowichan Tribes case in British Columbia.
The refusal by Canada’s High Court to hear a First Nation’s appeal against the decision in New Brunswick establishes a precedent that First Nations can seek compensation for loss of traditional lands, but they will not be able to assert ownership.
The Crown-Indigenous Relations Department says the ruling will inform arguments in other cases, including Cowichan, adding that “private property rights are fundamental."
The B.C. Supreme Court’s ruling in favour of the Cowichan Nation found it had “established Aboriginal title” to more than 5.7 square kilometres of land along the Fraser River in Richmond.
The provincial and federal governments and other First Nations are appealing that decision.

- A 14-year-old girl who has been missing for almost two weeks has been found safe, Toronto police say, ending a massive region-wide search.
Esther, who has been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum, disappeared from her North York home and was last seen around Bathurst Street and Hotspur Road after midnight on May 16.
Her disappearance led to a massive search operation — with a $25,000 reward offered for information on the missing teenager.
Police have said they are concerned for her safety, and last week upgraded their search to a Level 1 operation, which is the highest level.
“I can advise that she was located in a home here in Toronto,” Supt. Don Belanger of 32 Division told reporters.
“Our investigation will now turn to whether or not there is any evidence of criminality associated with her prolonged disappearance.”

“Today I rise to express my outrage and disgust as a father. Fourteen-year-old Esther has been missing for over two weeks since the autistic girl was last seen with no shoes on. And reportedly on Friday an antisemite began tearing down the missing persons posters because she’s Jewish. What kind of sicko would do that?” Poilievre said.
He continued, “This is a child. And it compounds the bullets that have been flying into children’s schools… You have no place in this country if you’re targeting innocent, Jewish children… And each and everyone of us have a duty to say enough is enough, we’re sta...

- Canadian Health Minister Marjorie Michel faced heat from reporters Thursday, questioning her for the government's decision Tuesday to require incoming travellers from all Ebola-affected regions to self-isolate for 21 days effective immediately.
Asked how Canada is justifying these travel restrictions after condemnation from both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention – who suggested they are fueled by fear and not rooted in science – Michel said the decision was made in alignment with the U.S. and Mexico, as all three countries begin hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup games next month.
"I think FIFA is the key element because, as you know, people are traveling a lot during FIFA, and even if Canada still remains low-risk, we are taking all the precautionary measures. And, we are aligning with the U.S. and Mexico to have the same kind of measures," Michel said.

He continued: "Consider aluminum. It's basically electricity... In Canadian exports to the United States, are the energy equivalent to ten Hoover dams. With America's growing energy needs because of the incredible transformation here, does it really make sense to build the gigawatts here needed to replace Canada.”
On auto manufacturing, Carney added, “Canada is by far and away America's biggest customer, and an integrated North American market is the best and most durable way to confront intense — truly intense global competition."
Additionally, Carney said Canada has what the U.S. needs to "meet the exploding demand to power AI.”

Joly’s remarks come just under five weeks ahead of the deadline for the revision of the Canada-US-Mexico (CUSMA) trade deal – something the U.S. and Canada are yet to plan negotiations for amid a strained relationship.
Mexico, on the other hand, has officials meeting with U.S. counterparts for the discussions this week.
Carney was in New York City on Thursday, meeting U.S. business leaders, CEOs and money managers with an aim to attract foreign investors to Canada.
Joly added that Canadian ministers will soon be deployed to the U.S. to meet with business leaders and stakeholders in the private sector.

However two B.C. First Nations are challenging the project in court, and environmentalists argue the government’s claims of low-emissions LNG are just lip service.

- Divers in Laos have found five men alive deep inside a flooded cave, where they were trapped for more than a week. The cave is located in a remote area in Xaisomboun province's Longcheng district, about 75 miles north of Laos’ capital. Two others are still missing.
According to Mikko Paasi, a Finnish cave diver, getting to them is difficult due to how tight the cave is. Divers had to remove their oxygen tanks at some points because there are spots as small as 60 centimetres across; barely wide enough to fit their shoulders.
Mike Armstrong looks at how the villagers got stuck and the extraordinary rescue effort.
