- Description
- A British Columbia small business owner says he was stunned after receiving a UPS invoice for more than $3,700 that contained almost no information about who sent the shipment or where it was headed.
Dave Jackson, owner of Oh My Print Solutions, says repeated attempts to get answers from UPS led nowhere for weeks. He says a company representative eventually told him the shipment originated in China, but no further details were provided about the sender.
The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says it has heard similar complaints from small businesses dealing with UPS's dispute-resolution process. After Consumer Matters Anne Drewa contacted UPS, Jackson says he received a full refund. However, Consumer Matters says UPS did not respond to its request for additional information and it remains unclear who is behind the invoice.

- The US will livestream the Army's upcoming firing squad execution of a gunman who killed 13 people at the Fort Hood military base in 2009, the Pentagon said on Thursday, in what would be an unprecedented broadcast of a U.S. execution.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who championed the decision to execute former Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan by firing squad, called the move a "no-brainer" during an interview on the Real America's Voice network.
The move prompted criticism from some commuters at a train station in California. One called the plan "disgusting," while another said broadcasting it live would be "inhumane."
The execution is scheduled for Dec. 3 at the same sprawling Texas base where Hasan opened fire with a laser-sighted handgun in a medical facility. It comes amid heightened debate in the US over the death penalty following the botched lethal injection of a Tennessee woman last week.

“The future of Canada will be decided by Canadians, and the priorities of Canadians, the priorities of the people of Quebec,” Carney told reporters in Sherbrooke, Que., on Thursday.
On Friday, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre also weighed-in on Musk’s comments, calling them “silly tweets by people who have no power over what Canadians do.”
Musk, a former adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, said on his social media platform X that Quebec should separate, as should Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Then, is President Donald Trump’s latest executive order temporarily approving the use of red-dyed diesel for some vehicles – amid skyrocketing fuel prices – actually going to lower prices at the pumps, or is it simply a tactic to reel dismayed Republicans back in?
Plus, the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner has been announced – and it’s not Trump, despite being gung-ho in the belief that he has deserved it since taking office again early last year.
And new lawsuits from various states are dubbing mailed abortion pills a “public nuisance” and a violation of laws. Our Washington correspondent Reggie Cecchini reports on all this.

"We're calling on the government to follow through and sue Stelco's owner to enforce job guarantees. Computer scientist and mathematician Mark Daley says if AI can easily solve problems that humans cannot, in the future it will likely solve much larger problems that humans can’t understand.
Daley says “At some point, there is going to be a loss of understanding. And I'm going to grieve that as a human who wants to understand. But if that breakthrough leads to a new type of drug that cures 80 per cent of cancers, it's okay that I don't understand it.”
As Nathaniel Dove explains, the hesitation about AI goes far beyond math. It's about whether humans are still involved in discovery.

They also examine the growing focus on ICBC after questions surrounding potential changes to no-fault insurance, and how the NDP is trying to turn the issue into a vulnerability for the BC Conservatives.
The pair break down competing economic announcements from both parties and discuss whether a campaign that has so far lacked major moments or excitement may be waiting for the Oct. 14 leaders' debate to truly shift gears.

- Description
- Scenes of widespread destruction across Gaza City on Wednesday, three years after Israel launched its offensive in response to the Hamas-led attacks in southern Israel.
The attacks, during which 1,200 people were killed and 251 hostages were taken to Gaza, marked the deadliest day in Israel's history. Israel's subsequent bombardment and ground operations have killed more than 74,000 people in Gaza, health authorities there say.
The anniversary is also the first since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal established last October that was supposed to halt major fighting but has failed to stop Israeli attacks in Gaza or secure the disarmament of Hamas and other militant groups.
The deal left Israel in control of some 53 per cent of Gaza, since expanded by Israeli forces to nearly two-thirds. Hamas controls the remaining third, where the 2-million-people population mostly live in makeshift tents and bombed-out buildings.

- Canadian Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre grilled the Liberal government during Question Period Wednesday, blaming the increasing costs of diesel on “Liberal laws that prevent us from refining diesel for every Canadian.”
After Energy Minister Tim Hodgson shared that prices for diesel went down three cents a litre this week, Poilievre shut down his “good news,” and asked that the party “vote to save Canadians’ money” instead.
“They could vote for Bill C-38 and extend the suspension on the fuel tax,” Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said. “That’s an immediate measure that’s going to help all of Canada. Why don’t they vote for families? Why don’t they vote for Canada one day?” he added.
Poilievre retorted: “We want to vote to get all taxes off of fuel, until at least July 1, and get rid of the worst Liberal taxes on fuel forever. That would be the way to vote for farmers, for truckers, and for...

- Attorneys for Christa Pike spoke Wednesday following a hearing where a Nashville judge said she would order Tennessee officials to preserve all evidence from the state's failed attempt to execute Pike last week for a 1995 murder — including the syringes and other tools used in two botched lethal injections.
Attorney Randy Spivey said that Pike is “angry and confused” after the botched execution: “Christa has a long road to recovery. She has a blood clot in one of her arms. She has pneumonia. She is not able to swallow yet, so she has not eaten. She cannot move either of her arms. Both of her arms and hands are tremendously swollen and we do not know what, if any, function she will regain in her arms."
"[It is] unimaginable the state would try to execute her again," Spivey added, asking for the governor to commute her sentence.

- Despite a recent FBI complaint depicting the potential weapons used in the deadly Tumbler Ridge shooting earlier this year, Canadian Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree has explained why the government has not yet identified the firearm used to kill eight victims in the B.C. community.
Asked if it was a political decision not to name the gun, Anandasangaree told reporters, “Absolutely not,” adding, “This is in respect of the people who were tragically killed… the [impacted] families themselves were asking many, many questions. And I think it would be irresponsible to give you bits and pieces of a very large set of investigations.”
Anandasangaree’s response comes one day after it was revealed a Seattle-based FBI agent accused a Washington state suspect, 30-year-old James Bryant, of conspiring with Tumbler Ridge mass shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar for months online before the fatal attack.
The FBI complaint says Van Rootselaar, 1...
