- A Calgary senior is warning others after he was scammed out of $1,000 after buying what he thought was a new iPhone 15 Pro Max.
“I didn’t have any doubt that it was real,” Boyd told Global News.
The 80-year-old, whom Global News is not fully identifying due to safety and retribution concerns, said he bought the phone on May 1 on Facebook Marketplace. Boyd said the seller then showed up at his place with the phone in hand.
“It was all sealed,” the senior pointed out.
The seller even provided him with the “original” receipt showing the phone had been purchased down east back in October 2023. Boyd said he also checked the phone’s serial number and the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI). All checked out fine.
Boyd said the first sign of a problem was when he tried to update the phone with his own information and it wouldn’t update. It was only after he took it to a representative at a local Apple...

- Canada announces $76M in aid for Ukraine intended to bolster air defence | FULL
- Date posted
- Description
- Canada will contribute $76 million to a German-led initiative that aims to quickly source and deliver air defence systems to Ukraine to fend off Russian air attacks, Canada's Defence Minister Bill Blair announced on Friday.
Blair made the announcement during a visit from his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius. Berlin launched the initiative last month, citing increased Russian strikes.
The meeting comes after Britain’s Foreign Secretary David Cameron urged the U.K.’s allies, including Canada, to spend more on their militaries, warning the West needs a “harder edge for a tougher world.”
The current NATO target for defence spending is two per cent of GDP. Cameron wants it raised to 2.5 per cent. Canada routinely misses the current benchmark, and last week Blair signalled that it is unlikely to change in the immediate future, saying in a speech that it is “hard to convince people that that was a worthy goal.”

- Description
- Grilling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in question period on Wednesday over his handling of the opioid crisis, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre called Trudeau a “radical idealogue” and said his policies around “safe supply” had led to an increase in drug-related deaths.
Trudeau defended his government’s policies toward decriminalization and safe supply, saying it follows a “compassionate, science-based approach.”
“We will continue to be there to help people, not imprison them,” he said.
“They are helping to kill people,” Poilievre shot back.
Trudeau said in response the government needs to respond to the opioid crisis, which is “taking lives left, right and centre.”
