The National Honours and Awards Amendment Bill proposes the creation of two new forms of recognition: the Order of National Pride and Patriotism Excellence and an Award of Valour. The Award of Valour would honour people who risk their lives or make extraordinary sacrifices to protect others during dangerous situations. During the debate, Senator Janelle Chanona recalled the hijacking of a Tropic Air domestic flight on April 17, 2025. Chanona reflected on the fear experienced by those onboard and the bravery displayed during the crisis.

- A twenty-one-year-old motorcyclist lost his life in a traffic accident on the Pine Ridge Road in the Cayo District yesterday evening. The deceased has been identified as Jorge Faustino Zetina, a labourer of San Antonio Village. Police visited an area approximately six and a half miles along the Pine Ridge Road at around seven o’clock, where they found Zetina motionless in the middle of the road. His extensively damaged motorcycle was found nearby, while a grey Ford Escape with significant damage to its front was parked approximately seventy-five feet away. An initial investigation indicates that, at around six o’clock, thirty-three-year-old Hugo Blanjener Galicia of El Progresso Village was driving the SUV south along the Pine Ridge Road when the collision occurred. ASP Stacy Smith gave a very surfaced report on the matter.

The new message that is slowly taking hold is that reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather, a sign of courage. The Belize Family Life Association (BFLA) is on entity that is working at normalizing conversations about our emotional well-being, as explained by social worker Darby Herrera.

The Government of Belize through the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW), alongside local stakeholders, has rolled out several nationwide initiatives for this month. Just yesterday, a glow walk was held by the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW) as one of the initiatives to raise awareness, this is among several other initiatives which will be held throughout the month of September. Mental health professionals and community advocates point out that emotional distress and isolation can impact anyone facing economic and personal pressures. Breaking this cycle requires shifting the cultural narrative so that asking for help is viewed as a sign of strength rather than weakness. As September unfolds, a very important message that Herrera reiterates is that suicide is preventable, and no one has to walk through their darkest moments alone.

- Belize continues to await a date for oral hearings in the case concerning Guatemala’s territorial, insular and maritime claim before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The written phase of the proceedings has already been completed, but the Court has not indicated when the two countries will be called to The Hague to present their arguments. Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oscar Arnold, says the case has taken longer than initially anticipated.
The dispute was formally placed before the ICJ in June 2019, following successful referendums in both countries. Guatemala submitted its Memorial in December 2020, while Belize filed its Counter-Memorial in June 2022. Guatemala later delivered its Reply, followed by Belize’s Rejoinder in June 2023, completing the exchange of written arguments.
