- A portion of the funding will go into secondary education and technical and vocational training. The work will include training for teachers and school leaders, assessing how students are performing and better preparing young people for the jobs available in Belize. On the energy side, the programme includes a new high-voltage submarine cable connecting the mainland to Ambergris Caye. The cable should provide a more dependable electricity supply for the island and cut down on the need for costly emergency generation. The Compact also calls for changes in the way the energy sector is managed and regulated. And while most of the money is coming from the MCC, Belize is also expected to provide its share. Prime Minister John Briceño explained that much of the country’s contribution will not be paid in cash. Instead, it will come through staff, property and other resources used to carry out the projects.
The programme will run for five years, with both the Government and...

- Description
- The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has set dates for oral hearings in Belize’s two major territorial cases. The hearings will take place one after the other at The Hague early next year.
The first case is Guatemala’s territorial, insular and maritime claim against Belize. Arguments will be heard from February 22 to 26, 2027. Just days later, Belize will return to court for its separate case against Honduras over ownership of the Sapodilla Cayes. Those hearings are set for March 1 to 5. Prime Minister John Briceño officially announced the dates yesterday. He also spoke about the work now being done by Belize’s legal team and said the Government expects the cases to finally settle any doubt over Belize’s land, islands and sea.
The Guatemala case has been decades in the making. Belize and Guatemala signed a Special Agreement in 2008 to take the dispute to the ICJ. Guatemala approved that move in a referendum in 2018, and Belize followed in 2019...

The portable stoves will also support soldiers during extended deployments. Brigadier General Anthony Velasquez explained what the BDF received and how the equipment will help soldiers carry out their duties.

- Prime Minister John Briceño says the Government’s decision to provide another fuel subsidy to private bus operators was made to protect commuters, not because the Belize Bus Association threatened industrial action. Bus operators had warned that they could take their buses off the road if the Government did not respond to the rising cost of fuel and other operating expenses. Such a move would have affected thousands of people who rely on public transportation to get to work, school and other essential services. Cabinet later approved another round of fuel support to keep the buses running without an increase in fares. Speaking on The Morning Show today, the Prime Minister said the Government was not pressured into making the decision. He explained that the main concern was the hardship a bus fare increase or disruption of service would cause for ordinary Belizeans.
Briceño said many commuters simply cannot afford to pay more for transportation. He maintained that...

During the interview, the Prime Minister went into more detail on what his Government has done to help families deal with the rising cost of living. He spoke about wages, income-tax relief, electricity bills, bus fares and assistance for lower-income families. One of the biggest announcements yesterday was the planned increase in the minimum wage from five dollars to six dollars an hour. That is a twenty-percent increase and is expected to benefit almost fifty thousand workers. For historical context, the minimum wage was three dollars and thirty cents an hour in 2012 but was raised to five dollars in January 2023. Once the new increase takes effect, a minimum-wage worker will earn two dollars and seventy cents more per hour than in 2012. Speaking on Love FM’s The Morning Show, Briceño said he “vehemently disagreed” with that view. He insisted that social justice remains at the heart of both the PUP and the work of his government. According to the Prime Minister, Espat’s comments do not consider the work being carried out across the various ministries. He said Cabinet regularly discusses concerns brought forward by ministers and considers how its decisions will affect ordinary Belizeans.
Espat made the comments during an interview with a local news station, responding to questions about possible fallout from the PUP’s Belize City municipal convention, which was held on August 30./

Briceño acknowledged, however, that important sectors are being affected by external and climate-related pressures. Sugar production has fallen significantly due to fusarium disease and the mealybug infestation. Government has allocated five million dollars to combat the pest and another three million dollars for disease eradication. A fifty-million-dollar Green Climate Fund project will also support five thousand cane farmers with replanting, irrigation, drainage, soil improvement and integrated pest-management practices. And while agriculture faces those challenges, the Prime Minister says investor confidence in Belize remains strong. Tourism, however, has experienced challenges from the hea...
