- Description
- Cuban doctors, nurses and other medical professionals will be able to continue serving Belize under individual employment contracts, as Belize and Cuba agree not to renew the longstanding Medical Brigade arrangement. Government says the Ministry of Health and Wellness will contract each professional directly to maintain the delivery of medical services. The announcement follows months of discussions over how to retain Cuban personnel while reviewing the agreement under which brigade members have served Belize since 1990. It also comes against the backdrop of sustained United States pressure on countries participating in Cuba’s overseas medical programme. In August, Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca said Belize was exploring arrangements that would allow Cuban medical professionals to remain through work permits or permanent residency. Speaking on August 5, he outlined the ministry’s position following discussions between Prime Minister John Briceño and U.S. Deputy Secre...

- Description
- The diplomatic pressure dates back to February 2025, when Washington expanded visa restrictions to cover officials, including foreign government officials, linked to Cuban overseas labour programmes that the United States alleges involve forced labour. In June that year, Washington announced restrictions against several Central American officials. Those announcements did not publicly identify the officials concerned. Caribbean governments have challenged Washington’s characterisation of the medical missions, arguing that Cuban personnel provide essential services their health systems cannot easily replace. Regional foreign ministers raised those concerns with U.S. officials, while some governments reviewed employment and payment arrangements. In Belize, Cabinet directed the Foreign Affairs and Health ministries to examine alternatives. By June 2026, Foreign Affairs Chief Executive Officer Oscar Arnold was stressing that any change had to account for the doctors, nurses, specialis...

- Government is laying out its case for the proposed new airport in San Pedro, saying the development would prepare Ambergris Caye for continued growth and address space and capacity constraints at the existing island airport. In a statement, the government and the Belize Airport Authority said the current facility was built when passenger numbers, aircraft movements and tourism arrivals were considerably lower. They say growth in the island’s population and visitor arrivals is creating challenges for aircraft operations, passenger processing, expansion and long-term safety planning. The proposed airport would provide additional operating space, improved terminal facilities and greater capacity for future passenger demand. Government also anticipates better connectivity, stronger resilience during emergencies and natural disasters, and new opportunities for tourism, investment and employment. The project has been under discussion for some time. Back in June, Love News spoke with ...

- Coming out of today’s press conference by the opposition, UDP’s Tracy Panton defended the UDP’s time in government. She says crime was better controlled under former Prime Minister Dean Barrow and argues that the current administration has failed to keep the country safe. Her comments follow the recent violence that prompted the government to impose another State of Public Emergency.
Panton also politicised the crime situation, predicting that voters would vote the PUP out, come March 2027 because of crime. She tied her criticism of the government’s handling of public safety directly to an appeal at the polls.

- As the opposition leader is demanding answers from the government and the Commissioner, she says the people committing the crimes must also be held accountable. She spoke following Saturday’s meeting at the House of Culture, where National Security Minister Michel Chebat and Commissioner Rosado met with individuals identified as gang affiliates. That meeting came a day after the quadruple murder along the Coastal Plain Highway. Panton says those responsible for the violence cannot be left out of the discussion about accountability.
As for the meeting on Saturday, Minister Chebat says the intent was to find out what was behind the recent violence and help prevent more killings. He also rejected suggestions that the government was offering money for peace, saying no payments had been offered or were being planned./

- A State of Public Emergency is now in effect in parts of Belize as authorities respond to a recent increase in shootings and murders. The declaration covers areas of Belize City, parts of the Belize District and parts of the Cayo District. Officials say the move follows intelligence showing an increase in gang-related violence and retaliation. The State of Public Emergency came into effect on Saturday, October 31, through Statutory Instrument 130 of 2026. Minister of National Security Michel Chebat says the decision was taken as the government works to respond to what he described as an escalation in violent crime. Chebat says citizens deserve to know what actions are being taken to reduce criminal activity and improve public safety.

- Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado says the move followed intelligence assessments showing that gang-related conflicts had moved beyond isolated disputes and developed into coordinated retaliatory attacks. He pointed to several recent killings, including Friday’s quadruple murder along the Coastal Plain Highway, as part of the increase in violence. Rosado says police believe that attack was linked to an internal feud within one of the gang factions.
Along with the State of Public Emergency, the government has announced the creation of an urban crime suppression unit made up of officers from the Belize Police Department, the Belize Defence Force and the Belize Coast Guard. The government is also moving ahead with consultations on possible changes to the Firearms Act, the Misuse of Drugs Act and the Crime Control and Criminal Justice Act. The proposed changes include tougher penalties for firearm, drug and gang-related offences, as well as increased penalties for ad...

Minister of National Security Michel Chebat says consultations are underway as authorities look at stronger penalties and new measures to address rising violence. Among the proposed changes are tougher penalties for certain offences, including mandatory custodial sentences, even in some cases involving first-time offenders. The government is also looking at updating the laws to include synthetic drugs that are not currently covered and providing clearer guidelines for courts when dealing with gang-related crimes. Another proposal would allow minors who commit serious offences to be tried as adults. At the same time, authorities are considering stronger penalties for adults who recruit or use children to carry out criminal activities. - Police say the murder of 19-year-old Dodrick Madrill on Freedom Street, Belize City, was not a random act, but appears to be connected to a dispute within a gang. Madrill was shot and killed on Thursday, October 29, while walking along Freedom Street. According to police, a major breakthrough in the investigation came through footage captured by the Crime Fusion and Operations Centre, which recorded the shooting and movements before and after the incident.
Police have since jointly charged 31-year-old Emerson West and a 16-year-old boy with murder. ASP Smith explained that although investigators believe only one person fired the shots, both accused persons were charged based on the evidence gathered during the investigation. She declined to provide further details about the alleged roles of the accused, stating that those matters will be addressed in court. Madrill’s murder happened just one day before the deadly shooting on the Coastal Plain Highway, where four men were...

- Police say investigations into both incidents are continuing as they work to determine if anyone else was involved. Police have released more details about the murder of 31-year-old Herbert Belloso, who was chased and shot dead in Ladyville on Saturday morning. Authorities say Belloso had previously been detained as a person of interest in another murder investigation, but no charges were brought against him. ASP Stacy Smith says Belloso was near a store along Compassion Lane when a blue Chevrolet Equinox pulled up. Police say three men got out of the vehicle, two of them armed. Belloso tried to escape, but the gunmen chased after him and shot him.
Smith also revealed that Belloso had previously been detained by police during an investigation into another murder in Ladyville. However, she says investigators did not have enough evidence at the time to charge him. Police have not confirmed whether Belloso’s killing is connected to that earlier murder investigation or the r...
