- Two men were shot and killed early this morning near a wake in Cotton Tree Village, Cayo District. Preliminary reports identify the victims as Fernando Corona Jones and Esau Perez. The men were reportedly standing along the roadside near the wake for Kenisha Hyde when gunfire broke out around three o’clock. Both died at the scene. At a police briefing this afternoon, the department addressed the shooting and concerns about police coverage in the area. Our understanding is that Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado expressed concern over the lack of a police presence where the killings occurred. ASP Stacy Smith outlined what investigators have learned and the measures taken since the attack. With another event expected in the village tonight, she says police are increasing their presence.

- Description
- Prime Minister John Briceño says government is working to close Belize’s electricity supply gap and give households and businesses a more dependable source of power. Speaking with Love News, the Prime Minister outlined the country’s plan to address the shortfall and strengthen energy security. The issue has brought periods of load shedding, with BEL temporarily cutting electricity to selected areas when available supply cannot meet demand. The company says those controlled interruptions help protect the national grid from wider failure. Belize’s reliance on electricity from Mexico leaves the system particularly vulnerable when that supply is reduced or unexpectedly lost. Against that background, Briceño explained the measures being pursued to increase available power and reduce the risk of further disruptions.
Government’s response has included an emergency declaration under the electricity procurement regulations, allowing BEL to secure temporary generation ...

Speaking with Love News, Briceño explained some of the obstacles affecting implementation as Belize works to increase electricity generation and strengthen the national grid. Among the projects discussed was the Saudi Fund for Development-backed solar investment. Belize signed a seventy-seven-million-US-dollar loan agreement in August 2023, originally intended to finance sixty megawatts of solar generation and improve the reliability of the electricity network. In explaining the delays affecting energy investments, Briceño said funders had received incorrect information about the location allocated for battery storage. According to the Prime Minister, that misunderstanding caused a significant delay in moving the project forward. He said he has br...

- Culture Minister Francis Fonseca is backing historian Assad Shoman’s explanation for the controversial cover of his newly released book, A History of Belize in Thirteen Chapters. Fonseca says he understands the National Kriol Council’s concerns, but believes Shoman intended to get Belizeans talking about colonialism and the oppression that came with it.
The criticism centres on the depiction of two Black men on the cover of the book’s Sapphire Edition. The Council says their exaggerated features recall racial caricatures used to ridicule and dehumanise people of African descent. It has asked Shoman and the publisher to explain the choice and reconsider whether the image respects the dignity of the ancestors it represents.
Shoman says the artwork reproduces the British Honduras Coat of Arms issued in 1907. He maintains that he chose it to expose the racism and exploitation of colonial rule. Fonseca says he accepts that explanation and does not believe Sho...

- Description
- Belizean tour operators are meeting face to face with cruise line executives this week, hoping to get more of their tours onto the itineraries offered to passengers visiting Belize. The Belize Tourism Board is supporting the delegation at the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association’s thirty-second annual cruise conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The event, which runs from October 12 to 16, brings together more than seven hundred cruise industry delegates, destination representatives and cruise line executives. For the Belizean businesses attending, it is a chance to show what they offer and speak directly with the people who help decide which tours passengers can book. Tanisha Vernon, owner of TukTuk Belize Tours, says those conversations allow operators to explain what makes their tours different and learn what cruise lines are looking for.

The hope is that those discussions will lead to more bookings for Belizean operators and more cruise visitors spending with local businesses. The BTB says it will continue supporting operators as they pursue those opportunities. With the conference ending today, the follow-up work now begins.

He was killed on October 10 when his SUV collided with a house being transported near Cotton Tree Village, between miles forty-two and forty-three on the George Price Highway. His wife and an eleven-year-old boy survived with minor injuries. In addition to enforcement, CEO Williams also spoke about measures the ministry is exploring to make these moves safer and prevent further collisions.
Ponce’s death follows at least two other fatal collisions involving houses being transported since November last year. - Description
- Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca says one possible explanation for the Guatemalan military aircraft’s entry into Belizean airspace is that it was involved in a joint counterdrug operation with Honduras and the United States and flew beyond the operation’s anticipated radius. In an interview today, Minister Fonseca was careful to stress that this information still needs to be verified.

The Prime Minister, who is attending the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, said Belize is concerned and disappointed by the decision. He stressed that an independent country has the right to choose its diplomatic partners and maintained that Belize is doing the right thing by supporting Taiwan. Fonseca yesterday addressed a diplomatic communication attributed to a spokesperson for China’s Embassy in Jamaica. The note described the sanctions as a warning and a deterrent, accusing certain politicians of supporting Taiwan’s pursuit of independence and hosting representatives Beijing regards a...
