- And while the latest Sarstoon encounter again placed Belize’s territorial dispute with Guatemala in the spotlight, Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca used his official Tenth Day address to reaffirm Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Fonseca said the Battle of St. George’s Caye remains an important symbol of Belizeans’ determination to defend their homeland. He also pointed to the case before the International Court of Justice as the peaceful and lawful path towards finally settling Guatemala’s longstanding claim and providing certainty over Belize’s territory and borders.
The written phase of the ICJ proceedings has been completed, but a date has not yet been announced for the oral hearings. Fonseca maintained that Belize remains confident in its case and committed to defending every part of its territory while awaiting the court’s ruling./

- Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca said sovereignty must also be reflected in the daily lives of Belizeans. Fonseca acknowledged that many families continue to struggle with the cost of food, fuel, electricity and other basic necessities. He said national development must include practical measures to reduce poverty and provide greater support for vulnerable families in both rural and urban communities.
Fonseca called for an expansion of poverty-alleviation programmes and stronger safety nets covering food, healthcare, education and basic services. He also highlighted the need to lower the cost of essential food items, stabilise electricity costs, manage the effects of international fuel prices and support local farmers and fisherfolk to increase domestic food production. Fonseca said Belize’s economic growth must be inclusive and must reach families in underserved communities.

- Description
- As has become customary around September 10TH , the debate has resurfaced over the relevance of St. George’s Caye Day and whether its annual parade and official ceremonies should continue in their present form. While supporters regard the occasion as an important symbol of national identity and territorial defence, critics argue that its traditional telling is too closely rooted in Belize’s colonial past and does not fully reflect the country’s diverse population. Minister of Culture and Chairman of the National Celebrations Commission Francis Fonseca was asked whether the 10th, its parade and accompanying ceremonies remain relevant to modern Belize.
The holiday commemorates the Battle of St. George’s Caye, fought between September 3 and 10, 1798. The celebration was formally established one hundred years later, when September 9 and 10 were declared public holidays in 1898. Despite those longstanding criticisms, the 10TH remains an official public holiday and a m...

The vehicle reportedly rolled backwards, overturned and flung Solis from the cab. He became pinned beneath the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police Staff Officer, Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith, explained the preliminary findings.
Bulridge clarified that the truck, trailer and heavy equipment belonged to Bahadur Trucking and Backhoe Service, a private contractor hired to work in the area. The company says Solis was on duty and accompanying the contractor to the worksite, but no Bulridge employee was operating the equipment. ...

- After more than a decade of consultation and legislative review, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2026 has been enacted and gazetted. The new law replaces the outdated Factories Act and introduces modern safety standards for workplaces across Belize. The Act establishes an Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate and outlines responsibilities for employers and workers. It also provides workers with protection against retaliation for reporting unsafe conditions and the right to refuse work involving an imminent and serious threat. When the legislation returned to the Senate on August 4, Private Sector Senator Kevin Herrera supported stronger workplace protections but called for clearer timelines to reopen businesses ordered closed over safety violations. He also sought safeguards to balance inspections involving domestic workers with the constitutional right to privacy inside private homes.
The Government says more than a dozen amendments were made following c...

- After almost five hours of debate, the Senate approved three pieces of legislation connected to the implementation of Belize’s one-hundred-and-twenty-five-million-US-dollar Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact. The bills were passed following a division requested by Senator Glenfield Dennison. Ten senators voted in favour, while three abstained. The measures are the Education Bill, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Bill, and the Millennium Challenge Account-Belize Authority Amendment Bill. Together, they establish the legal and institutional framework needed to implement major education and workforce-development reforms under the Compact. Earlier in the sitting, Lead Government Senator Eamon Courtenay, speaking on behalf of Education Minister Francis Fonseca, requested special consideration for the bills because of the timeframe attached to the Compact. Courtenay acknowledged that the proposed reforms deserved more extensive examination and committed the Gov...

- Church Senator Louis Wade Junior eventually agreed to accommodate the Government’s request. However, he warned that senators should not again be asked to reduce their scrutiny of major legislation because of deadlines or time constraints.
At the conclusion of the five-hour debate, Senator Dennison called for a division, requiring each senator’s vote to be formally recorded. The three bills were approved with ten senators voting yes and three abstaining. The MCC Compact is a five-year grant agreement signed by Belize and the United States Government in September 2024. The one-hundred-and-twenty-five-million-US-dollar grant is not a loan and is being supplemented by almost fifty-five million US dollars from the Government of Belize. - Young Belizeans are being given a direct voice in shaping the country they want to inherit as Belize looks ahead to its fiftieth anniversary of Independence. The fifth annual Belize Creative Youth Ideas Summit was held today at the House of Culture, bringing together students from St. John’s College, Nazarene High School, Gwen Lizarraga High School and the Institute for Technical and Vocational Education and Training. This year’s summit challenged the participants to consider a central question: if Belize is forty-five today, what should the country look like five years from now when it celebrates Belize at 50? Students worked together to identify national challenges and propose practical and ambitious ideas in areas including education, employment, technology, the environment and opportunities for young people.
The summit also created a space for government officials to listen directly to the generation that will help lead Belize into its next major chapter. Min...
