- In transportation, Cabinet has approved another phase of fuel subsidies for private bus operators to prevent an increase in transportation costs for tens of thousands of commuters. Additionally, Prime Minister says the Government has acted to remove General Sales Tax from electricity bills. In his address, the Prime Minister said the measure would benefit all one hundred thousand residential customers of Belize Electricity Limited. The announcement appears to go further than the measure previously approved by Cabinet, which exempted residential electricity bills of two hundred dollars or less from GST. Clarification will be sought on whether the exemption has now been extended to every residential electricity account, regardless of the monthly bill. While those measures are intended to reduce the cost of electricity, the Prime Minister also outlined the Government’s plans to address load shedding and Belize’s dependence on imported power.

The incident occurred on September 10, when members of the Belize Territorial Volunteers, accompanied by the Belize Defence Force and Belize Coast Guard, travelled from Punta Gorda for their annual journey around the island. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, approximately 18 Guatemalan military and civilian vessels were deployed near the island and obstructed the Belizean group. On Friday, Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca announced the Government’s intention to issue a formal diplomatic note protesting Guatemala’s actions. Fonseca also stressed that, despite the serious incident, communication between both countries continues as Belize seeks a peaceful and diplomatic resoluti...

- Students, primarily in rural and remote communities, were either challenged to find alternative transportation to school today or were kept away from classes following disruptions to several contracted school-bus routes. The service interruptions stem from outstanding payments owed to school-bus contractors. The Ministry of Education acknowledged the situation in an urgent statement, explaining that delays in completing the contractual approval process had affected payments. On Friday, Education Minister Francis Fonseca explained that a new approval system was introduced for the 2026–2027 academic year. Under that system, school-bus contracts must be reviewed by the Office of the Contractor General before they can be approved and paid. According to Fonseca, although many of the arrangements involve relatively small contracts, each must still complete the required review process. That additional procedure created delays at the beginning of the school year.

- Description
- Thirty-three-year-old Colin Francis has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for the manslaughter of 60-year-old Nestor Vasquez and 10 years for the attempted murder of psychiatric nurse Augustina Elijio. Justice Nigel Pilgrim handed down the sentences in the High Court this morning. They will run concurrently and take effect from June 6, 2019, when Francis was first remanded. Francis will therefore serve an overall sentence of 16 years, with his seven years already spent in custody counted toward that term. Vasquez’s brother, Channel Seven News Director Jules Vasquez, attended this morning’s sentencing. He says his brother was failed by the authorities when he was placed in the same cell as Francis, despite Francis having attacked Elijio two days earlier and being in a psychotic state.
The entire period spent in custody was consequently credited toward his sentences. The two offences occurred within days of each other. On June 4, 2019, Francis stabbed Elijio after...

- Description
- The sentencing of Colin Francis today has again put Belize’s mental-health system under the spotlight. But for Nestor’s brother, journalist Jules Vasquez, this case is about more than the sentence. He says it shows that Belize still does not have a proper system to treat and monitor people with severe mental illness, especially when they may be a danger to themselves or someone else.
Francis was declared unfit to plead in February 2024 but was medically assessed as fit for trial in June 2026. Justice Pilgrim criticized prison authorities for failing to comply with an order requiring Francis to be psychiatrically evaluated every six months. At least four assessments should have been conducted, but none was provided before the latest evaluation. The judge ruled that the failure should not disadvantage Francis, as earlier assessments may have determined that he was fit to enter his guilty pleas sooner.
