- As the United States marks its 250th birthday this year, one of Amarillo’s most recognizable Route 66 landmarks is also celebrating a milestone.
The Big Texan Steak Ranch, known for its 72-ounce steak challenge and its embrace of Western heritage, is marking 66 years in business on historic Route 66.
Located just off Interstate 40, the restaurant has become a must-stop for travelers drawn to the larger-than-life Panhandle experience.
Route 66 explorer Brian Triffet said, “It is the exaggeration that we were looking forward to. It’s unique. There’s nothing anywhere that I’ve ever seen like this.” I asked whether anything on their trip compared to the Big Texan, Triffet replied, “No. Absolutely not.”
Co-owner Bobby Lee said the Big Texan serves more than 600,000 people each year, with visitors coming from around the world.

Cole Tomas Allen, 31, and his attorney did not present a case to try to get the accused gunman out ahead of a trial; however, they can still present a case for release at a later date, if they choose.
Despite this, prosecutors still wanted to present their evidence to the court, but the judge denied that request.
Allen's next hearing is now set for May 11.

Although the U.S. has had a history of assassination attempts on presidents in the modern age of social media, "this seems to be different," Dr. Casey Burgat, Director of the Legislative Affairs program at The George Washington University, told The National News Desk.
When you think back to the 1960s, not only political riots, but we had an assassination of president there, Reagan. There was an attempt on his life, too. But this seems to be different in that we see it every single day," Burgat said.
Algorithms are flooded with and curated for "political violence" rhetoric, Burgat said. On these algorithms, he added, an individual need not identify themselves.

- After nearly 10 months in immigration detention following the deadly Colorado firebombing case, a federal judge has ordered the immediate release of the suspect’s ex-wife and their five children from the Dilley Detention Center in South Texas.
The family, identified as Melissa El Gamal, an Egyptian mother, and her five children, was detained by the Department of Homeland Security shortly after her ex-husband, 45-year-old Mohammed Soliman, was arrested. Soliman is accused of attacking a group of pro-Israel demonstrators in Boulder, Colorado, in June 2025. One person was killed, and 14 were injured.

- Customers scrambled to get out of the way after a driver accidentally crashed into and through Good Grounds Coffee + Cafe on Main Street in Lumberton.
Owner Will Gallagher shared the store's surveillance video with us.
Amazingly, no customers or staff members were hit by the car, although one man sitting by the window was cut by flying glass and pushed by the impact of the collapsing storefront and car. The female driver was taken to a hospital to be checked out.
The customer near the window suffered cuts to his arm and the female driver was taken by ambulance to be checked out at a hospital but appeared to be okay.
Police Chief Danny Sullins tells KFDM she's 68 years old and from Lumberton. He was on scene with other officers seconds after the 10:30 a.m. crash.

The district will offer affordable daycare for full-time employees, a move AISD Early Childhood Director Brittany Hinz said is designed to support retention and recruitment.
“Our goal is we want to serve high-quality care for children, but we also want to keep our staff," Hinz said. "And then we want to get new staff. It's so important to us that we have teachers in our classrooms for our kids. And so that's a really big priority in this program as well, is that we're using it as a benefit to them so that we can hopefully provide them something that allows them to come back to work or to stay working with us when they have children.”
