- At 12:00 a.m. Saturday, a post-9/11 law allowing the federal government to gather intelligence on foreign nationals will expire after the House of Representatives failed to extend it.
On Thursday, 19 Republicans and 199 Democrats voted against a short-term renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which gives intelligence officials authority to surveil the communications of foreign nationals outside of the United States without obtaining a warrant from a judge.
Some of the lawmakers who opposed the extension, like Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., argued Section 702 was unconstitutional from the moment former President George W. Bush signed it into law in 2008.
"There’s only one way to fix it: Require warrants, judicial warrants," Massie said.

- Description
- A new mural packed with “66 stories” is now on display in Amarillo, celebrating the centennial of Route 66 and the people, places and memories that shaped the Mother Road.
The vibrant artwork was unveiled in an underpass that connects downtown Amarillo with Historic Sixth Street near Bowie. Organizers said the mural is meant to highlight that Route 66’s legacy is rooted not only in destinations, but also in the people who built and lived along it.
Shanda O’Neill, project director for Blank Spaces Murals, said the images featured in the mural were drawn directly from community storytelling.
“We did a journalism fellowship with other youth students who wrote stories about people who had an impact or contributed to the Mother Road. All of the icons, all of the subject matter that is in the mural actually comes straight from stories that were given by our Amarillo citizens that had something to do with building Route 66 and having an impact ...

- One of the many events taking place on Friday, in Amarillo, commemorating the Route 66 Centennial was the Tin Can Tourists Open House at the Big Texan RV Park.
“We have 65 participating vintage trailers and were all here to celebrate the Route 66 Centennial,” said Barry Kole, member of the Tin Can Tourists.
It’s all about finding one, restoring it, and showcasing a vintage travel trailer.
For a couple of hours on Friday, the public was invited to come in and get an up-close-and-personal look at travel trailers dating back to the 1940’s.
“When you see them all together in one park like this for a rally, you kind of lose sight of the fact that one is from Oklahoma, two are from Texas, and the rest of them are from California,” said Rose Larson, Oklahoma representative for Tin Can Tourists. “There are so few and far between them that people are in awe of them.”

- The National Hurricane Center has highlighted an area of interest for tropical development in the Gulf. This area only has a 10% chance of development into a tropical cyclone, but the warm moist air mass will be enough to cause a widespread flood threat across portions of Texas and the south-central U.S.
This warm, moist air mass will meet a slow moving cold front over the weekend into next week. As it does, the cold air will force the warmer air up. The warmer air will condense and the water vapor will turn into heavy rain for the region. That heavy rain could lead to flash flooding this weekend into next week.

- Friday, June 12, 2026: Severe Storms Possible Friday Afternoon/Evening
Strong to severe storms capable of large hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado will be possible Friday afternoon and evening. The main area of focus is the northern TX Panhandle into the OK Panhandle and far northeastern NM.
Storms will fire off around 3-6PM, impacting the central Panhandles by 9-11PM. The severe threat will decrease overnight.
Storms will be fairly widespread also bringing a flood threat. That flood threat will continue into the weekend with our next system (more on that in another post). Widespread rainfall amounts over an inch are expected.
My 2 cents: I think we will have a strong line of storms with the worst being north of Amarillo, but including Dalhart, Dumas, Guymon, and Boise City. I think the storms will race through pretty quickly Friday. Saturday is what I'm looking at more for that increased flood threat.

Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis., Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, told The National News Desk, Regina Wallace-Jones initially volunteered to appear before his committee in May, but on Monday, her attorneys requested a subpoena for her testimony. Which he sent 24 hours later.
I was mostly disappointed because I was concerned that she would ultimately plead the fifth rather than answer the questions that we have,” Rep. Steil said.
His concerns came to life during Wednesday’s hearing. Wallace-Jones pleaded the Fifth 22 times.
Including eight of his own questions.
Did you weaken fraud prevention standards to increase donations on the ActBlue platform?" Steil asked. "On the advice of counsel, ...

“Customers sometimes, in the summer months, will get a kind of sticker shock because of the heat and cooling. Cooling will make up about 50% of their energy use,” Cantu said. “So we encourage our customers to visit our website and review ways to save, such as using their appliances during the coolest part of the day. Early morning. Late evening. Close your blinds and your curtains through the hardest part of the day, or just something simple like changing your AC filter often.”

- KERRVILLE, Texas — The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed two more cases of the destructive New World screwworm parasite in Texas on Monday, demonstrating the difficulty of stopping a pest that could potentially devastate the nation's cattle industry.
The new cases were found in a calf and a dog, located hundreds of miles apart in La Salle and Andrews counties. The discoveries bring the total number of confirmed Texas cases to four. The screwworm was first discovered in a 3-week-old calf last week, and a second case was found only miles away in another young calf.
A veterinarian in Andrews County submitted the samples from the infested dog. Early reports indicate the dog had recently been in Mexico with its owners.

- The Texas Panhandle supplies 20 percent of the nation’s beef, an industry shaped in part by early cattle trailblazers Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight, who helped build communities and expand ranching across the region.
“When we’re talking about celebrating our country, we have to talk about people like Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight, because they were community builders,” said Madeleine Van Leunen, an educator at the Charles and Mary Ann Ranch Historic Site.
In 1887, Charles E. Goodnight and his wife, Mary Ann, settled into a two-story home in Goodnight, Texas, about 40 miles southeast of Amarillo. Van Leunen said Charles Goodnight chose the location because the railroad was under construction.
“Charles chose it specifically because the railroad was under construction. And with the railroad came people and resources. So that is why it was so crucial for Goodnight to use his money and his generosity to build a community for pioneers,” Va...

Speaking from the Oval Office later in the day, Trump signaled that additional U.S. military action could be imminent.
“We’re going to be attacking them, attacking them very hard,” Trump said. “We hit them hard yesterday. We’re going to hit them hard again today.”
The latest escalation began Monday when an American Apache helicopter went down while operating near the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. Trump said Iran “shot down” the aircraft, while a U.S. official later said an Iranian drone collided with the helicopter, causing it to crash.

Post said the city has turned down several events because of the condition of the old court. He said the civic center currently hosts the Harlem Globetrotters, but leaders hope the new floor will help expand the number of basketball events held at the venue.
“We are hoping to increase bookings with this new course 100%,” Post said. “We've already started getting calls, and th...

NEW YORK (AP) — Victor Wembanyama shook off his miss at the buzzer in Game 2 by taking over Game 3 of the NBA Finals and preventing the San Antonio Spurs from getting pushed to the brink of elimination.
Wembanyama made the first two shots he attempted on Monday night on the way to scoring 32 points in a 115-111 victory at the New York Knicks. He had nine points in the first five minutes, including an alley-oop on the first basket of the game and a dunk on the next possession and was a force on both ends of the court, especially late when it mattered most.
Wembanyama was a key to San Antonio building an early lead but even more importantly in a third-quarter rally to bounce back from another blown double-digit lead.

“Even though it's a small town, small city living crime does happen. Doesn't matter how big or small the city is, it does happen,” Morales said. “So I would encourage our citizens, our community, to lock up their vehicles, lock up their homes when they're not there, lock up their garages and sheds, businesses, make sure locked up, maybe, you know, invest in video surveillance.”

“It’s crazy, it’s totally different than in England, it's totally different, it’s like nothing we’ve ever seen before,” said Cherise Sherdley-Davis, a visitor from Blackpool, England.
After three years of buildup and hype, the week is finally here, it’s the Route 66 Centennial 100th anniversary. It’s not just in Amarillo, it’s from one side of the Texas Panhandle to the other.
“We’ve got a 100-year-old building that was in that matches the 100th year of Route 66, and it really does help our local economy in our area,” said Greg Conn, director of the Milburn-Price Museum.
Rural communities like Vega depend on tourism, and what better way to host a centennial event than to have people come not only from the United States but from other countries to stop in Vega and see the attractions.

This means people are driving north, south, east, and west, and that’s why the owners of Helium Heights are starting something new: a market taking place two days back-to-back.
“So, this is basically a farmers market we have close to 75 vendors that are going to be coming here and food trucks,” said Rosenbach.
“This is an ideal time to launch with the Route 66 Centennial coming up; we're happy to support them and do so as well, and I think this is a national in...
