- After more than a year of closure at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, leaders with the Panhandle Plains Historical Society are moving forward with a plan to bring part of the museum’s collection to a new satellite space in downtown Amarillo.
The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum has been closed for over a year due to 149 fire code violations. Mark White, a trustee of the Panhandle Plains Historical Society, said the closure has kept the public from seeing a significant regional art collection.
“People have not been able to view that art collection. And it's really sad that they can't do that. We have over, oh, probably a thousand pieces of art that are very important to this part of the country. This allows us to showcase that on a rotating basis,” White said.

Three thousand and eight hundred pounds of bulk waste were collected out of West Coronado over the weekend.
The city of Borger is operating a neighborhood cleanup program that aims to not only clean up neighborhoods but also to educate property owners on what they can and can’t do when it comes to vegetation and trash.
“We’re trying to cut down on some of that illegal dumping, people throwing mattresses in the alley and just leaving them there,” said Brandon Stope, assistant city manager for Borger. “That creates a fire hazard; it also creates a barrier for picking up containers, so this just really helps individuals in those neighborhoods to be able to bring their bulk refuse to a single place and then we can go pick it up and dump it for them.”
