- The race to dominate artificial intelligence is fueling a massive data center construction boom across the United States. Still, some advocates say the battle is no longer just about technology — it is increasingly becoming a national security issue.
While speaking with The National News Desk's Jan Jeffcoat, Chuck Flint, executive director of the Coalition for Affordability and Prosperity, argued that foreign adversaries and political activists may be attempting to influence public opposition to data center projects at a time when the United States and China are competing for leadership in artificial intelligence.
According to Flint, his organization recently asked leaders on congressional intelligence committees to investigate whether foreign actors are attempting to shape public opinion surrounding data center development.

- Exploring the eastern part of the Texas Panhandle as the Route 66 Centennial Caravan left Amarillo on Tuesday morning and headed out east.
The group is exploring all 178 miles of the Mother Road across the Texas Panhandle.
“That’s Skelly doesn’t eat much, doesn’t talk back, but people love it, they take pictures,” said John Neff, driving a 1971 Chevy Nova.
“The open road is just awesome, I love being on it, seeing all the countryside and of course all the people,” said Doug Diller, driving a 1929 Ford.
“I’ve been across here so many times in my past, but I help build overpasses and stuff at Groom, and you know they brought the big cross in here, and they have several things in here that are interesting,” said Terry Watson, driving a 1956 Ford.
Some of the owners of the restored vehicles say they not only look forward to crossing back the Mother Road but also to doing so again in the future.

- SAN ANTONIO - New York Knicks fans were assaulted outside the Hotel Valencia Riverwalk early Sunday morning after Game 5 of NBA Finals.
The incident happened around 12:30 a.m. outside the hotel off East Houston Street.
Police said the 62-year-old and 29-year-old father and son were exiting an Uber when they were assaulted by several individuals. The suspects all ran off after the attack.
The 29-year-old victim didn't want to be identified, but said: "Two guys come up from behind us and just start punching us. We didn't say anything, we didn't do anything. My dad hits the ground immediately. I also go to the ground, they're punching me, punching him, stomp, trying to stomp on us."

A journey that started on June 5 in Southern California has made its way across Arizona and New Mexico and has now reached the Texas Panhandle.

- An investigation is underway after a gunman in Midland killed one person and injured 10 others on Friday. It marks the 23rd mass shooting reported in Texas since the beginning of the year, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive.
The Gun Violence Archive is an independent research organization which defines a mass shooting as a shooting in which four or more people shot at the same time and location, not including the shooter.
The count in Texas reached a peak in 2023, when Gun Violence Archive data shows Texas had 65 reported mass shootings. By 2025, the count had dropped to 37 mass shooting incidents in the state.
The shooting in West Texas has prompted condolences from Texas state leaders and renewed calls from advocates for more action to address gun violence.

- RIO DE JANEIRO (TNND) — Two helicopters collided over Rio de Janeiro on Sunday morning, crashing in the city's western area. All six people aboard were killed in the crash, including American singer and comedian Oliver Tree, according to firefighters.
Rio de Janeiro's Military Fire Department shared that one helicopter crashed into the parking lot of a car dealership and ignited a fire. The fire was quickly extinguished.
Officials have yet to determine the cause of the collision.

- At 12:00 a.m. Saturday, a post-9/11 law allowing the federal government to gather intelligence on foreign nationals will expire after the House of Representatives failed to extend it.
On Thursday, 19 Republicans and 199 Democrats voted against a short-term renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which gives intelligence officials authority to surveil the communications of foreign nationals outside of the United States without obtaining a warrant from a judge.
Some of the lawmakers who opposed the extension, like Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., argued Section 702 was unconstitutional from the moment former President George W. Bush signed it into law in 2008.
"There’s only one way to fix it: Require warrants, judicial warrants," Massie said.

This area only has a 10% chance of development into a tropical cyclone, but the warm moist air mass will be enough to cause a widespread flood threat across portions of Texas and the south-central U.S.
This warm, moist air mass will meet a slow moving cold front over the weekend into next week. As it does, the cold air will force the warmer air up. The warmer air will condense and the water vapor will turn into heavy rain for the region. That heavy rain could lead to flash flooding this weekend into next week.

Strong to severe storms capable of large hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado will be possible Friday afternoon and evening. The main area of focus is the northern TX Panhandle into the OK Panhandle and far northeastern NM.
Storms will fire off around 3-6PM, impacting the central Panhandles by 9-11PM. The severe threat will decrease overnight.
Storms will be fairly widespread also bringing a flood threat. That flood threat will continue into the weekend with our next system (more on that in another post). Widespread rainfall amounts over an inch are expected.

- KERRVILLE, Texas — The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed two more cases of the destructive New World screwworm parasite in Texas on Monday, demonstrating the difficulty of stopping a pest that could potentially devastate the nation's cattle industry.
The new cases were found in a calf and a dog, located hundreds of miles apart in La Salle and Andrews counties. The discoveries bring the total number of confirmed Texas cases to four. The screwworm was first discovered in a 3-week-old calf last week, and a second case was found only miles away in another young calf.
A veterinarian in Andrews County submitted the samples from the infested dog. Early reports indicate the dog had recently been in Mexico with its owners.
