- Family, friends and fellow officers gathered in Childress to honor fallen Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Sergio Romero and remember the service and sacrifice he made in the line of duty.
Troopers from across Texas and several other states attended a memorial ceremony at the Childress High School gym. Romero was killed last week while trying to make a traffic stop on Highway 287. Cameras were not allowed inside the gym.
During the ceremony, Romero’s siblings shared memories of him growing up. They said, “He’s out there, he’s watching over us.”
Jazmin Duran, a family friend who grew up with Romero, said his death stunned those who knew him.
“I think we were all shocked. It just you just don’t expect it,” Duran said. “Especially someone that, you know, so close and that you grew up with in such a small community. It was. It was just unexpected.”

- Description
- Amarillo city leaders have approved an $85,000 external audit to investigate what went wrong with the city’s water meters and billing process after about 55,000 residents were overcharged following the rollout of a new billing system in March.
City Council voted to hire an outside agency to examine the problems, which officials have described as involving multiple parts of the system. Mayor Cole Stanley said the city’s internal review has been looking at “the meters themselves,” the computation that transmits meter data, the billing software and staff.
“As of recent, we've been focused on the meters themselves. Then you've got the computation that transmits that. That's a separate step. Then you get the billing software, and then you've got staff,” Stanley said. “So those four components right there have the internal review going. But the bottom line is, our customers have been inconvenienced.”

- Friday, June 19, 2026: Rain/Storm Chances Friday with Severe Risk Saturday and Sunday
MORNING: Heavy rain continues in the eastern/southern/southeastern TX Panhandle this morning. Localized flash flooding remains a concern through the late morning as these storms slowly move north.
AFTERNOON/EVENING: More rain is possible, especially to the west into New Mexico. Storms could fire off around 3-5PM and move east/southeast (Tucumcari/Clovis/Portales) and east/northeast (Clayton). Heavy rain is possible. I wouldn't rule out some strong winds and small hail.
WEEKEND: Severe storm chances increase into the weekend as we start to heat back up again. Level 2/5 risk for areas to the north and northeast both days. Large hail and damaging winds are possible. The tornado threat is low but not zero. Flash flooding will also be possible.
Hope you have a great Friday! ABC 7 Amarillo

- Description
- Juneteenth celebrations in Amarillo are bringing community members together to honor the day enslaved people in Texas learned they were free and to celebrate freedom, culture and unity.
Organizer Melody Graves said understanding the historic message delivered on June 19, 1865, remains a key part of the celebration.
“We have to remember our contributions and what we had to overcome to get to these places are things that we should constantly remember. And Juneteenth just gives us an opportunity to come together with everybody in the city and be able to celebrate and talk about history and remember where we came from, and be empowered about where we have the ability to go,” Graves said.
Graves said the goal is to uplift the community and come together as one.
“Oftentimes, our community gets a bad rep for whatever may happen, but ultimately it is our opportunity to show that we are a community, that we love each other, that we're fe...

- A new report is raising fresh concerns about the future of Social Security, warning that the program's financial outlook has deteriorated and that millions of Americans could face automatic benefit reductions if Congress fails to act.
According to the latest projections, Social Security's trust fund is now expected to be depleted in 2032 — one year earlier than previously forecast. If lawmakers do not approve changes before then, benefits could be automatically reduced by roughly 22 percent.
The warning is renewing pressure on Washington to address a problem that policymakers have acknowledged for decades but have repeatedly struggled to solve.

- Dozens of children at the Maverick Boys and Girls Club got their hands dirty for science as part of a new summer program aimed at teaching gardening, nutrition and life skills.
Home Depot and Prairie View A&M partnered with the Maverick Boys and Girls Club to bring the Learn, Grow, Eat and Go program to summer campers, including supplies for raised garden beds.
Amanda Harris, store manager at Home Depot, said the partnership was an easy yes after the club reached out.
“We just love giving back. But they reached out to us and said Absolutely. We jumped on board,” Harris said. “I do believe it was close to a $5,000 donation that we gave to be able to get all this stuff for them to put in raised garden beds so these kids can learn, you know, how to grow and do things with their hands and just get dirty, like kids like to do.”
Maverick Boys and Girls Club CEO Donna Soria said the effort is about more than gardening, using the gard...

The newly released information has reignited questions that first surfaced during the COVID-19 pandemic about the extent of American involvement in overseas laboratories studying dangerous pathogens and whether federal officials were fully transparent with the public about those programs.
Among those leading the push for further investigation is Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who has spent years clashing with former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci over gain-of-function research and the origins of COVID-19.

- Description
- As we transition from the spring into the summer months, more people will be traveling on I-40 and Route 66 in the Texas Panhandle.
That’s one of the primary reasons why the owners of Jericho Gap are investing to bring this ghost town back to life.
“The reason why we’re doing this is to preserve history in the area and in the Texas Panhandle and on Route 66 because so much of it is on the cusp of being lost,” said Blair Schaffer, co/owner of Jericho Gap.
“Towards the end of Jericho’s heyday, I would say maybe there were just a few people left,” said Blanca Schaffer, co/owner of Jericho Gap. “The last person to leave was in 1995, and it was already considered a ghost town then.”
Funding from a national trust for historic preservation to help preserve Route 66 is enabling Jericho Gap to undertake some much-needed refurbishment projects.

“When the weather service issues a heat advisory, we are permitted to close down five of our major trails just because we have most rescues on those trails,” said Mysti Garvin, park interpreter and volunteer coordinator.
Some trails stay open during this heat advisory, so ABC 7 News asked what determines whether they remain open.
“Well, they are the most shaded trails; they stay cooler, they're easier to access if we have to have any rescues off of them,” said Garvin.

“The open road is just awesome, I love being on it, seeing all the countryside and of course all the people,” said Doug Diller, driving a 1929 Ford.
“I’ve been across here so many times in my past, but I help build overpasses and stuff at Groom, and you know they brought the big cross in here, and they have several things in here that are interesting,” said Terry Watson, driving a 1956 Ford.

Customer Daniel Smit left a negative review online after having a bad experience at the newest ice cream shop in town -- "Local Scoop."
Shop owner Malary White Goldman says it was an attack on her business. The heated dispute was caught on camera.
Daniel Smit says he went to the grand opening for the Local Scoop back in March. He was hoping to get a taste of some of his favorite ice cream flavors.
But what happens next is far from sweet.
"Don't you ever worry about the Local Scoop again, okay?" said Malary in a video.
This is the aftermath after "constructive criticism" goes wrong.
"Just didn't have a good experience, so I wrote a bad review," said Smit.
It's something he does all the time, no matter if the experience was good or bad.

- Description
- What time of day should you water your plants in the summertime?
Watering your plants in the morning is the best option. It minimizes the amount of evaporation, allowing the water to soak into the soil better. This is because of how much water vapor the atmosphere can store at different temperatures. The cooler it is, the less water vapor (less evaporation). The warmer it is, the more water vapor (more evaporation).
Remember to water in the morning for the most efficient use of water!
