- Flames from a fast-moving wildfire tore through a railroad trestle bridge outside the Canyon city limits, causing part of the bridge to collapse and prompting evacuations for nearby residents.
The wildfire broke out Thursday evening as strong winds and dry conditions helped flames spread quickly across parts of Randall County near Canyon. A nearby resident, Katherine Gonzales, said people were told to evacuate as the fire moved closer to their home.
“It was that devastating, really,” Gonzales said.
Gonzales said she watched the bridge catch fire as conditions worsened.
“I saw the flames. There was over there by the railroad tracks. And it wasn't really that bad at the time. And they were saying that, since it's on their side, then we were okay. And all of a sudden, it got worse because the wind. And then it. And then everybody was evacuated,” she said.

- Jan Jekielek, author of the New York Times bestseller Killed to Order and senior editor at The Epoch Times, testified before Congress Thursday on China's alleged forced organ harvesting industry.
He joined the National Desk's Dee Dee Gatton to react to the ongoing summit and weigh in on what, if anything, should be said behind closed doors.
On the Iran-China-U.S. dynamic
Jekielek said China has little incentive to help broker a deal that would cut off a key source of cheap oil.
China kind of needs that oil from Iran that it has been getting at fire sale prices — breaking the sanctions, blockades, and so forth," he said, echoing remarks made by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. "So I don't think that China actually needs to be convinced at all about participating in this way.
At the same time, Jekielek argued, Beijing has a conflicting interest in seeing the Middle East conflict drag on.
They want to keep that conflict going as long as possible,...

Juan Rodriguez with the Texas A&M Forest Service said emergency crews faced another major challenge as multiple wildfires broke out at the same time.
“Trying to figure out which fire was where and where it was going and what it was impacting at the time, and as well as the locations that the fires had started,” Rodriguez said. “The fires started in open rangeland and had a lot of fuel to grow and continue.”
Firefighters were able to stop the fire’s forward progress overnight, preventing nearby neighborhoods from burning.

The Iranian regime's obstruction of the strait and the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports have choked off about 20% of the world's crude oil supply and caused energy and other petroleum product prices to skyrocket. James Bellar, a board member of the Continuum of Care, said he is especially concerned about an increase among senior citizens.
“If you have an elderly person in your life and you know, you start seeing some erratic money things, check on them. CASA estimates Dunlap donated more than 600 blankets, each made by hand. Her daughter, Becky Elizabeth Dunlap, said the blankets offered a kind of comfort that went beyond typical donations.
“Everybody gives things like toiletries and stuffed animals and such, but a blanket or a quilt or stitching is something entirely different because this is something that they can wrap around them,” Becky Elizabeth Dunlap said. “Maybe they don't have somebody's arms to put around them, but they can put that blanket around them and keep them warm and keep them safe.”
Jarah Mendoza, executive director of Amarillo Area CASA, said the blankets often became one of the few consistent belongings children could keep as they moved through the foster care system.

- In about two weeks, the summer camp season gets underway across the Lone Star State.
On Wednesday, the staff at Ceta Canyon Camp & Retreat Center celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony commemorating the opening of the 2026 summer camp season, as they are one of two facilities in the Texas Panhandle to meet all the requirements so they can be open and offer summer camp activities this summer.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott put in new requirements with (Heaven’s 27 Bill) after the tragedy at Camp Mystic, where 27 people, 25 campers and 2 staffers died from a catastrophic flood.
“Last year, there were 375 camps licensed as of last week, we were one of nine, and that says a lot and is a big deal,” said Joe Alarcon, CEO of Ceta Canyon Camp & Retreat Center. “A lot of camps are struggling to get their license before camp starts, which is in a couple of weeks.”

- A year after Ariana Estrada was shot and killed, her family is working to raise awareness about domestic violence and connect women with resources that could help them leave dangerous relationships.
In June 2025, David Crowder was indicted for murder after police said he walked up to a car with an AR-style rifle and shot Estrada multiple times after chasing her.
Now, Estrada’s relatives are urging victims to seek help before it is too late.
“You just have to commit and not think that this cannot happen to you, because we would have. We never thought that this would be something that we'd be dealing with in our lifetime. Like it's not something that anybody should have to deal with, but they will. And there's a lot of help. There's a lot of help in Amarillo that people don't know about for a reason,” said Natosha Marez, Estrada’s aunt.

- Description
- The City of Amarillo is facing continued backlash from residents over unusually high water bills, with some customers reporting charges two to three times higher than normal.
Frustrations were voiced during Tuesday’s city council meeting, where the issue was not listed on the agenda but was raised during public comment.
“My March bill—they said I used 13,000 gallons. My April bill—I was told I used 48,000 gallons. That’s a huge, huge discrepancy,” said Amarillo resident Heather Ward.
Another resident, Elaine Oliver, said her bill far exceeded her other monthly expenses.
“$400 for my water bill is more than my gas, my electric, my internet, and my phone,” Oliver said.
Before the meeting, Amarillo City Manager Grayson Path held a press conference acknowledging problems tied to the city’s new water billing system.
Path explained that some customers, particularly in billing district 14, saw dupl...

- High water bills are not on the agenda for Tuesday's Amarillo City Council meeting, residents are expected to complain about them during public comment.
Last week, ABC 7 News spoke with residents who were billed for enough water to fill two residential swimming pools.
Councilman Les Simpson asked City Manager Grayson Path to investigate what he called ""historically high" water bills.
During a 2 p.m. news conference on Tuesday, Path admitted there were some errors identified by the meters, but the city can't pinpoint why.
"One example is similar bills in billing district 14 displayed incorrect water usage graphs, that show duplicate read entries, although the actual usage appears to be correct," Path said. "Another example is some customers experienced shorter billing cycles in March, followed by longer billing cycles in April. This is caused by our conversion in our in our (new billing system) rollout process. And so which has caused...

On any given day, there’s an average of 11,000 to 20,000 vehicles that make their way through Clarendon on US 287.

Testimony is expected from survivors, the survivors' attorney, and a human rights advocate, with a press conference scheduled to follow.
“This is where Palm Beach County, I’m going to apologize, because there was a grave miscarriage of justice by our state attorney back there, Barry Krischer,” Frankel said in an interview after a $4 million federal funding announcement.
