- The construction boom of data centers going up across the Texas Panhandle is doing wonders for the housing market.
Clarendon city leaders have discussed reviewing RV park ordinances, regulations, and code enforcement to better prepare for future growth.
“So, as we’ve seen an increase in people coming here and the city, the RV parks the city has been looking at ordinances and visiting with attorneys and looking to local communities to see if there is anything we need to do to change our ordinances and make sure we are making this a safe place to live for our citizens,” said Jacob Fangman, mayor of Clarendon.
“One of the first things they got with me about was the potential for this to be a challenge related to public safety and public health concerns related to water supply and all kinds of issues, including emergency responses,” said Floyd Hartman, interim city administrator for Clarendon.

- Gov. Bob Ferguson arrived in Spokane on Sunday afternoon to meet with first responders and monitor a growing wildfire crisis after declaring a statewide emergency and imposing a burn ban amid record drought, strong winds and rapidly spreading fires.
Ferguson called the situation an “unprecedented catastrophe” and said he expects a large response.
Ferguson said he has spoken with President Trump and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
About 5,000 homes and 60,000 people have been evacuated as firefighters work to contain the fires, and authorities have opened an evacuation shelter at the Spokane Convention Center. - Briscoe County and other counties in rural parts of the Texas Panhandle, it can be quite challenging to attract new businesses.
The county did get one new business to come to Briscoe County: a renewable computing company, and they set up just south of Silverton off Highway 207.

For the third year in a row, United Way and Panhandle Community Services hosted the poverty simulation to build awareness and help train volunteers to better understand the needs of the community. During the simulation, participants are placed in the role of a local family living on a limited income and must make choices such as whether to pay rent, buy groceries or get to work.

- Potter County leaders are again grappling with overcrowding at the Potter County Jail, a problem the sheriff warned could worsen if the facility fails another inspection.
During Monday’s commissioners' meeting, Sheriff Brian Thomas asked commissioners to approve a six-month contract with a private jail in Haskell County to temporarily relieve overcrowding. Under the proposal, the Haskell County facility would take 50 inmates and Potter County would pay $900,000.
Thomas told commissioners the cost would be “$98.50 per person,” adding, “It’s expensive.” He said the same option was offered about a year ago as a two-year contract, but he negotiated it down to six months.

“Yields are going down, and crop conditions are going drastically in the wrong direction,” said Ryan Wieck, an Ag producer. “There’s just no way to keep up with irrigation on these crops. The dryland crops have dried out and died, and some of them never even came up. Our irrigated crops they’re really struggling.”

“Yields are going down, and crop conditions are going drastically in the wrong direction,” said Ryan Wieck, Ag producer. “There’s just no way to keep up with irrigation on these crops. The dryland crops have dried out and died, and some of them never even came up. Our irrigated crops they’re really struggling.”
“On an average day like today when it’s going to be 100-plus or say 104 degrees, these crops will be using as much as half an inch of water per day,” said Kevin Heflin, agronomist with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Services.

During Monday’s commissioners' meeting, Sheriff Brian Thomas asked commissioners to approve a six-month contract with a private jail in Haskell County to temporarily relieve overcrowding. Under the proposal, the Haskell County facility would take 50 inmates and Potter County would pay $900,000.
Thomas told commissioners the cost would be “$98.50 per person,” adding, “It’s expensive.” He said the same option was offered about a year ago as a two-year contract, but he negotiated it down to six months.

- Lake Meredith in the Texas Panhandle is one of 35 lakes in the state infested with zebra mussels. That’s why Texas Game Wardens are advising all boaters who bring a boat to this lake: once you put the boat on a trailer, out of the water, you need to clean, drain, and dry.
“We’ve got staff out doing surveys for larval zebra mussels, and we found those mussels and then local staff went out and looked at the boat ramps and the rocks around the boat ramps, and we found attached viable adults,” said Caleb Huber, fisheries biologist for Texas Parks & Wildlife.
Boaters are required by law to drain all water from their boats and from on-board receptacles, such as bait buckets, before leaving the lake area.
