- What’s going on in the ER? Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania are all near the top of the list for hours patients spend waiting for their name to be called.
One of the reasons for the bottleneck is that American hospitals have a “boarding” problem. Patients who come into the ER and need inpatient care often spend hours, sometimes days, on a stretcher waiting for a hospital bed to open up.
And there is no bandaid solution to the backlog. According to researchers, the financial structure of hospitals is a little bit like airlines – they intentionally overbook to maximize profits. Add onto that a backlog of care needs shirked during COVID, healthcare worker burnout, rising insurance costs, and an aging population — and suddenly you have a crisis looming.
If something doesn’t change, researchers project that the US could face a critical hospital bed shortage by 2032. So how can we get more urgency in the emergency department? And wh...

- Inflation, redistricting war, Pa.’s role in control of U.S. House | Studio 2 from WHYY | 05/12/26

- Description
- Inflation hit its highest level in three years — driven by surging costs for energy, food and housing, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report released Tuesday morning. Just a few days ago, the Trump administration declared an economic victory thanks to a stronger than expected jobs report. Still, the latest data shows prices rising faster than wage growth, and a new CNN poll showed President Trump at a career low approval rating on the economy.
Those polled put much of the blame on the war in Iran, putting Republicans on the defensive heading into the midterms. Against that backdrop, the recent Supreme Court ruling weakening the Voting Rights Act has unleashed a new round of redistricting wars, with several southern states moving swiftly to break up minority-majority congressional districts that reliably vote Democratic.
Locally, Pennsylvania is seen as key in the fight to control the House of Representatives, with four seats currently held by Repu...

- CNN founder Ted Turner died last week, just as the future of the network hangs in the balance. After a competitive bidding war, Warner Bros Discovery, the parent company to CNN, is poised to be absorbed by Skydance Media – the same company that took over Paramount and its subsidiary, CBS, less than a year ago.
If the $111 billion dollar merger moves forward as planned, it will be the biggest media deal of the decade and bring major film studios, streaming powerhouses, and two legacy news giants under the same roof. Though Skydance has pledged to release at least 30 movies in theaters annually and invest in both studios, the proposal has drawn fierce pushback from Hollywood stars. Many argue that consolidation will shrink job opportunities and leave movie buffs and TV lovers with fewer choices.
Critics have also raised concerns about Skydance founder David Ellison. His father is the tech mogul Larry Ellison – one of the richest men in the world and an all...

- Who’s the best living American songwriter? The New York Times recently released their top 30 list, pulling together input from critics, journalists and notable voices from across the music industry. The lineup spans generations and genres, from icons like Bob Dylan and Dolly Parton to modern stars like Taylor Swift, Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar. It all grapples with the same question: how do we define what truly great songwriting looks like?
Lists like this are never just about who’s on them. They call into question who’s left off and why, and if you can really compare a country artist to a hip-hop writer, pop powerhouse or folk legend. Definitive compilations like this one also make us think about commercial success, cultural impact and our own tastes.
On this episode of Studio 2, we’ll look at what separates a good songwriter from a great one, and hear from the people behind The New York Times’ list. We want your hot takes, too, on who belongs and who ...

- Description
- The city of Philadelphia is facing another flashpoint moment for its public schools.
The district’s overhaul of its facilities master plan — including 17 school closures — passed the board of education last week despite rancorous push-back from several members of city council. Meanwhile, Mayor Cherelle Parker is advocating hard for more school funding via a $1 dollar surcharge on Uber and Lyft rides that officials say would stave off cuts to 340 classroom-based jobs.
On this edition of Studio 2, we’re digging into the fallout of the closures and the latest on how the ridehailing companies are lobbying against the tax. We’ll also look at the latest on the heated 3rd Congressional District race, council bills designed to limit ICE, the return of the Filbert Street bus terminal, and much more in a city headlines roundup.

- Fallout after SCOTUS guts Voting Rights Act | Studio 2 from WHYY | 05/04/26
- Date posted
- Description
- A recent Supreme Court ruling on voting rights is shaking the political landscape ahead of the midterms.
In a 6-3 decision, the conservative justices stuck down a Louisiana congressional map that included two majority-Black districts and ruled that race-conscious minority-majority districts were unconstitutional.
Critics of the decision say it will lead to fewer minority candidates, less Black representation, and guts essential protections in the Voting Rights Act.
The consequences are already being felt as the ruling has led to calls for states to redraw their congressional maps, many of them with Republican-controlled legislatures. Last year, President Donald Trump started the flurry of redistricting when he called on Texas to redraw its map, in hopes of gaining five more seats in congress. Blue states followed suit, and some analysts say the latest decision could lead to an era of constant, maximum gerrymanders, especially in states of one pa...

- Date posted
- Description
- For couples in the U.S., making their love official comes with a hefty price tag. The average wedding now costs around $35,000, a figure that can rival a down payment on a first home or years of student loan payments. Social media has intensified the pressure for a picture-perfect wedding, with trends like black tie, detailed themes, multi-day events and designated content creators on the rise.
Guests are also feeling the strain. Between travel, attire, gifts and pre-wedding events like showers and bachelorette parties, attending a wedding can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
In response to high prices, many couples are rethinking tradition altogether, opting instead for backyard ceremonies, courthouse weddings or casual parties in place of formal receptions (think: food trucks and DIYs). Most, however, still agree that the special day is worth the price, no matter how high.
On this episode of Studio 2: the rising cost of weddings and...

- The Big Fix: How to power our future | Studio 2 from WHYY | 4/27/26

- Description
- Energy demand is rapidly growing, fueled by AI data centers, industrial expansion and electrification. According to a recent report by consulting firm ICF, demand for electricity will increase 25% by 2030 and 78% by 2050. But America’s power grid is already overworked and buckling under the load.
Fuel shocks from the war in Iran are only making energy concerns more heated, and despite the United States being relatively energy independent, consumers are still feeling the pain at the pump and in the supply chain.
Some say the answer is to drill more and build more gas-powered plants. Others say this is the moment to double down on renewables and decarbonize our future.
On this episode of The Big Fix, we ask the question that touches everything from your electricity bill to the health of the planet: how should we power the future?

Congress ultimately beat back steeper proposed cuts to NIH last year and appears poised to do so again, but the science reductions that have gone through have left many doctors and researchers reeling.

- Date posted
- Description
- Are doomsday predictions of AI’s impact on workers overblown? There’s still a raging debate about how disruptive automation will be in the workforce and who will be hit hardest.
Verizon CEO Dan Schulman recently delivered a stark warning that unemployment could climb 20% to 30% within the next two to five years as AI and humanoid robots enter the workplace. A report by Boston Consulting group similarly predicts roughly half US jobs will be reshaped by AI in the next two to three years.
But others are more cautious. Most economists agree that while big disruptions are coming, the pace and scale is still uncertain.
This episode, we’ll look at AI's potential to replace workers and ask what past technological upheavals, from the Industrial Revolution to the internet, can teach us about navigating the transition. And we’ll also explore how the changes ahead could ripple into politics, culture and society.

- Stubborn inflation has dogged the U.S. economy for years now. Americans are paying more for groceries, housing, healthcare, and a war in the middle east hasn’t exactly helped. Up until very recently, supply chain disruptions sent gas and fuel prices soaring. All of this may be contributing to consumer sentiment reaching an all time low last week, according to a long-running University of Michigan survey.
So are Americans right to be glum about the economy? Are we headed towards a recession or is this a temporary discomfort?
President Donald Trump has waved away economic concerns, pointing to a thriving stock market and continues to call for interest rate cuts. And if his nominee for Federal Reserve chair gets the green light in tomorrow’s Senate Banking Committee hearing, he just might get them.
So who is President Trump’s pick to lead the central bank? And what might new leadership mean for inflation and the economy?

- Making friends can often feel a bit like dating – it can be awkward and vulnerable. And without the social infrastructure of school or work, it can be challenging to know where to begin.
A conversation that recently trended on X argued that making new friends outside the biggest cities in the U.S. is just harder. “Unless you’re from there, or you move right after college, everyone’s social circle is basically set to people they grew up with or worked with at 22,” one user wrote.
Even for those who have managed to develop connections, a survey by the American Friendship Project found that 40% of participants said they didn't feel as close to their friends as they'd like.
Time and again, research shows that community is critical to our well-being. Having close friends is linked to better mental health outcomes and longer life expectancy. So, how do we meet people if not at school or work? And once we make a connection, how do we get the m...

- Demystifying dementia | Studio 2 from WHYY | 4/8/26
- Date posted

- Description
- One in three older Americans will get some form of dementia – diseases like Alzheimer’s and Lewy body – and the numbers are only expected to grow. And the toll doesn’t stop with the patient. Tens of millions of family members and friends become caregivers, often at enormous personal cost to their own health, careers, and financial security. The economic impact to the country is also enormous, at hundreds of billions of dollars each year.
For decades, people diagnosed with dementia had little hope, but that's beginning to change with breakthroughs in diagnosis, treatment, and even potentially prevention. A simple blood test can now detect biological markers of the disease years before symptoms show. And while we still can’t reverse the course of disease, new drugs offer more tools for treating and managing symptoms.
Scientists are also developing a clearer picture of what puts people at elevated risk for Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases...

- Freedom of style or fashion decline? | Studio 2 from WHYY | 4/07/26

- Description
- Have Americans’ fashion habits become too casual? Are expectations around what’s considered appropriate or respectful attire become too lax? Recent headlines, at least, suggest so.
The restaurant chain Ruth’s Chris Steak House has introduced a business casual dress code for guests, banning ball caps and gym wear in its dining rooms. The move prompted a playful response from competitor Chili’s, which joked its only requirement is that guests be dressed.
The conversation extends beyond restaurants. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy is encouraging airline travelers to bring a greater sense of courtesy and presentation to the experience by asking to “dress up to go to the airport” and “have some decency.”
So what does how we dress say about us as a society? What do we gain or lose by becoming less or more formal? And who should set the rules?

- Artemis II and the new space race | Studio 2 from WHYY | 4/6/26

- Description
- On Monday, the crew of NASA’s Artemis II mission will surpass the record for the farthest distance traveled from Earth by humans.
As the space capsule loops around the moon in the “lunar sphere of influence,” the four astronauts will have the ability to make observations never before seen by human eyes.
The crew is the first to leave Earth's orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972, and NASA’s ramp up of its space program is just getting started. By 2028, the agency in partnership with either SpaceX or Blue Origin, wants to return humans to the lunar surface and gradually build a permanent moon base with landings every six months. “This time the goal is not flags and footprints,” NASA administrator Jared Isaacman said recently. “This time the goal is to stay…America will never give up the moon.”
Meanwhile, China is chasing a similar goal and plans to be on the moon by 2030. So, today on Studio 2 we’re unpacking the new space race. At a c...

- President Trump addresses the nation on Iran | Studio 2 from WHYY | 4/02/26

- Description
- Last night, President Trump addressed the nation with a clear goal – convince increasingly skeptical Americans that the war in Iran is worth fighting. In his first prime-time speech since the conflict began more than a month ago, he argued that military action was necessary because Iran's nuclear program poses an existential threat to U.S. security.
But the 20-minute address left many questions unanswered. It also dashed hopes that the president would announce a firm timeline for ending the war. While he said operations would wrap up "very shortly," financial markets were unconvinced. Oil prices surged and stocks fell sharply today, signaling that investors see no end in sight.
And it's not just the markets. Public opinion has been souring on the operation for weeks, with polls showing that the majority of Americans disapprove of the president’s handling of the conflict. It remains unclear whether the president's remarks will change that.

- SCOTUS weighs birthright citizenship | Studio 2 from WHYY | 03/31/26

- Description
- What does it mean to be an American? And how should we decide who gets to be one? Those are the questions at the center of a landmark Supreme Court case this week, as justices weigh the constitutionality of ending birthright citizenship.
Jus soli -- Latin for “right of soil” -- was enshrined in the 14th amendment to the Constitution in 1868. It was ratified in the aftermath of the Civil War and overturned the Court’s infamous Dred Scott decision, granting citizenship, and the rights that come with it, to formerly enslaved people. Thirty years later, United States v. Wong Kim Ark established that jus soli applied to all children born on U.S. soil regardless of their parents’ immigrant status. The policy makes the U.S. an outlier among other leading developed countries, and yet, in the decades since its adoption, birthright citizenship has been the source of little debate --until now.
In recent years, President Trump has called the right a “crazy p...
