- Benjamin Franklin once wrote, "in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."
True, but the devil is in the details. And in the U.S. there are a lot of details.
The American tax code is thousands of pages long and filled with ever-changing rules for deductions, credits, exceptions, subsidies, and much more. It's been estimated that we spend $146 billion and 11.6 billion hours each year just completing the paperwork. And then there’s the essential questions of who pays and how much?
So in the latest edition of our monthly “Big Fix” series — where we explore solutions to some of America's toughest problems — we’re trying to solve for the tax code.
For some, that means raising taxes on the wealthy. With income inequality and budget deficits continuing to grow, many progressives see higher rates on the richest Americans as a way to level the playing field. A "millionaire's tax" recently passed in W...

- “The Pitt,” the popular HBO medical drama set in a fictional Pennsylvania emergency room, includes some truly outlandish plotlines: a patient’s heart is pumped by hand; another loses a leg in a waterslide collapse. But one element is rooted in something increasingly realistic and threatening.
In the last ten years, cyberattacks have become a huge issue impacting vulnerable sectors like Healthcare companies, schools and other essential infrastructure. Last month, the University of Mississippi Medical Center closed nearly three dozen clinics for over a week after hackers breached their network and demanded a payout. Last summer, a ransomware attack brought down computer networks for the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office for weeks, causing some criminal cases to grind to a halt.
Management can feel incentivized to fork over ransom because it is often more costly to fight the attack, and in sectors like healthcare, the consequences of logistical grid...

- Martin. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Living Single. In Living Color.
They’re just a few of the shows from the 1990’s boom in Black-centered television.
In a new book, PBS Newshour co-anchor Geoff Bennett argues this was a golden era of TV, which for the first time offered full and varied depictions of Black life on the small screen. Black Out Loud: The Revolutionary History of Black Comedy from Vaudeville to ‘90s Sitcoms traces the roots of Black comedy back to the early minstrel shows in the late 19th century.
Bennett, a South Jersey native, explores how performers like Moms Mabley, Hattie McDaniel, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, Dave Chappelle and many others pushed social change, subversively challenged racial stereotypes, all while keeping their audiences, both Black and white, laughing through it all.
Bennett joins us to share this history and talk about the impact it had on his life.

- Description
- Weeks into the Iran war, it’s still unclear where it is heading and how long it will continue.
Over the weekend, President Donald Trump threatened to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants and energy infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened to shipping within 48 hours. But on Monday, hours before the deadline expired, Trump said he was postponing strikes, writing on Truth social that the U.S was in “very good and productive conversations” with Tehran and giving them five days to work out. Iranian officials, however, flatly denied there were peace talks underway and said it was a ploy by the president to lower energy prices and buy time for military planning.
Markets did surge, and oil prices fell sharply with Trump’s announcement, as investors bet the strait could reopen soon. But ordinary Americans haven’t felt much relief. The national average for a gallon of gas now sits at $3.96, according to AAA, up 35% compared to before the U....

- Should Americans have to prove citizenship in order to register to vote?
Senate Republicans are pushing to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act this week, including a key provision that requires proof of citizenship with a passport or birth certificate to register to vote in federal elections. In addition, the SAVE Act would limit mail-in voting, require a photo ID to vote and mandate states turnover voting rolls to the Department of Homeland Security.
Republicans argue the reforms are necessary to ensure secure elections and prevent noncitizens from voting. Democrats say noncitizen voting is already illegal and extremely rare – a study by the conservative Heritage Foundation found only 77 confirmed cases over two decades. Democrats also argue that the barriers in the bill would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters across party lines.
The SAVE Act faces an uphill battle in the Senate. With the filibuster, Republicans ne...

- Are you saving enough for retirement?
Do you think you’ll have enough to enjoy your golden years – lazy days of pickleball, traveling, playing with grandkids, volunteering or pursuing new hobbies?
Only a third of Americans say they feel financially prepared. A majority worry they’ll run out of money and wish they’d started saving sooner, and nearly half don’t have a retirement savings account. Younger generations, meanwhile, wonder whether Social Security will be viable in the long run.
The good news is that people with 401(k)s or IRAs have been helped by recent years of stock market growth, but retirement remains out of reach for many who are living paycheck to paycheck. And with persistent inflation and an uncertain economy, things may get even harder. Already, more people are putting retirement on pause to return to work, and a recent Vanguard report showed a record number of its account holders raiding their 401(k)s to cover daily...

- A case out of the Radnor School District, where a student allegedly used AI to generate nude images of classmates, is raising urgent questions about sexual harassment in the age of artificial intelligence.
The school community there is actively grappling with how to proceed in a world where guardrails haven’t kept pace with technological advances. This tension was on full display in January when Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot created and shared nearly 2 million deepfake sexualized images of women in what critics called an “industrial-scale abuse of women and girls.”
Today on Studio 2, we’ll take a closer look at the growing issue of nonconsensual AI-generated sexual imagery and what it means for victims.

- Iran war dividing the Trump coalition | Studio 2 from WHYY | 3/16/26

- Description
- Is President Donald Trump's coalition cracking over the Iran war?
Trump campaigned on ending the "era of endless wars" and putting “America first.” At a rally days before the 2024 election, he pledged: “You’re not going to have a war with me and you’re not going to have a Third World War with me.”
But now, with U.S. strikes on Iran, some of the loudest voices in the MAGA movement are calling that broken promise a betrayal. Tucker Carlson, Steve Bannon and Megyn Kelly are among those who have long championed anti-interventionism and are skeptical of regime change foreign policy. Joe Rogan, who endorsed Trump in 2024 on his widely popular podcast, is also calling the war “insane.”
Still recent polls show that the vast majority of President Trump’s supporters remain with him: 77% of Republicans voters support military action in Iran, while 89% of Democrats oppose it. But as this conflict widens and the costs grow, will that bac...

- Description
- Big tech is spending billions on data centers to power their energy-hungry AI. This comes at a time when Americans are facing record-high electricity costs. And a backlash is growing.
Data center development is facing mounting resistance in communities across the country. This year alone, at least 25 projects were cancelled because of resident pushback over worries that the facilities will drive up electric bills, consume vast amounts of water and pollute the environment. And the opposition is bipartisan – many of the cancellations were in counties that voted for President Donald Trump.
Now there’s growing demand that companies supply their own power, sometimes referred to as BeYONCE or “Bring Your Own New Clean Energy.” Last week, President Trump met with executives of companies including Google, Meta, Microsoft and OpenAI to ask them to sign a pledge to shoulder more of the costs. It’s called the Ratepayer Protection Pledge. But for some crit...

- Soaring costs of gas and cars | Studio 2 from WHYY | 03/10/26
- Date posted
- Description
- Gas prices are up 19% since the US initiated strikes in Iran, the latest cost surge hitting American drivers. The cost of buying a car is up 30% in less than a decade, as the price of insurance, maintenance and other auto-related fees have skyrocketed.
Fuelling the increase is both post-pandemic inflationary cost drivers and an industry emphasis on larger vehicles with more luxury features.
But what then accounts for this paradox of more Americans struggling to afford cars while consumers seem to continue to demand pricier options?
All of this comes amid a major shift in global auto trends, as more consumers are opting for electric vehicles and Chinese EV giant BYD has become the world-wide leader in the market.
As President Donald Trump’s regulatory rollbacks, tariffs, and disdain for green infrastructure have given the auto industry less incentive to prioritize EVs, critics say these moves will hurt both American consumers and man...

- Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has spent more than a year at the helm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and he remains one of the most polarizing figures in President Donald Trump’s cabinet.
He’s often discredited medical science, questioned public health experts, and brought skepticism to established government guidelines during a tenure that’s seen the firing of tens of thousands of HHS employees and cuts of over $2 billion in scientific research funding.
Critics say Kennedy’s changes to policy recommendations for vaccines, fluoride, and Tylenol are already harming people’s health and could have far-reaching consequences.
Some of his priorities have found more bipartisan appeal, including his criticism of food additives and ultra-processed foods — most recently calling out Dunkin’ and Starbucks. But his backing of the herbicide glyphosate has splintered his “Make America Healthy Again” movement.

- After decades of complaints by venues, artists and fans, a major antitrust case against Live Nation and its subsidiary, Ticketmaster, kicked off this week. In his opening statement, U.S. attorney David Dahlquist called the concert industry “broken” and claimed that Live Nation used monopoly powers to bully venues and rip off fans. Lawyers for Live Nation pushed back, denying the monopoly status and insisting that the company is “all about bringing joy to people’s lives.”
The case comes at a difficult moment for live music. Many artists have seen their revenue plummet with the rise of digital streaming, and ballooning costs have made staging a tour more expensive. Meanwhile, rising ticket prices are pushing some fans out of seeing their favorite musicians.
Today, we’re talking about why concert tickets are so expensive, what is at stake in this antitrust case, and how all this affects the live music scene in the Philadelphia region.

- Rapid developments in artificial intelligence are changing modern warfare and raising a new batch of ethical questions.
The U.S. military reportedly used Anthropic’s AI model Claude in the strikes in Iran and in Venezuela. But now the Pentagon has ended its contract with the tech company after a dispute over how the system would be deployed.
Anthropic wanted to put guardrails on Claude’s use – banning mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons without a human in the so-called “kill chain.” Military officials said they would follow lawful uses, but wouldn’t agree to restrictions imposed by a private company. As a result, Anthropic has been blacklisted and the Pentagon has struck a deal with OpenAI.

- What lower interest rates mean for homebuyers | Studio 2 from WHYY | 03/03/26
- Date posted
- Description
- Mortgage rates dropped below 6% last week for the first time in years, a sign that some economists believe will trigger a more active and competitive housing market.
As rates peaked near 7.8 percent in October 2023, many homeowners locked into lower rates were averse to selling, and prospective buyers have been wary of the added monthly mortgage costs associated with higher rates.
An analysis at the time found that renting had become cheaper than buying for most Americans.
Today’s picture looks different. House prices have risen by 9% since 2023. However, falling interest rates mean that mortgage payments are up by only 7%, compared with a 16% increase for market rents.
Today, the average property in Philadelphia sells for around $250,000, a mortgage averages $1,400 a month, and the typical rent is $1,900.
Purchasing a home, though, remains unaffordable for many. Prices have outpaced incomes and remain near hi...

- The U.S. attack on Iran is poised to become a hinge point in the history of the Middle East. Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei was killed, and the oppressive regime that has ruled for more than four decades has been significantly weakened.
But the endgame for the U.S. and Israel remains unclear. Will the attacks result in the regime change the majority of Iranians want? Or will the Trump administration settle for agreements with Khamenei’s successors that limit the county’s capacity for nuclear weapons?
In response to the American and Israeli offensive, Iran launched retaliatory attacks across the region, including strikes on U.S. military bases, and so far the operation has claimed the lives of four American service members, U.S. Central Command said Monday.
On the domestic front, Democrats are pushing a vote aimed at limiting President Trump’s authority to use military force against Iran. They argue that his actions w...

Last June, the United States carried out strikes on Iran, citing the growing threat of its nuclear ambitions as well as the war with Israel. Now, tensions are rising once again. Reports of unrest, the possibility of missile exchanges and renewed fears over nuclear development have put the region as well as the world on edge.
In this episode, we break down the conflict in the middle east and the U.S. role in it. President Donald Trump has publicly suggested that a military strike could be “easily won.” But behind closed doors, his top military adviser, Dan Caine, reportedly warned of something very different: a conflict that could come with serious risks, including long-term strain on military resources and American casualties.
So what are the real options on the table? Could a limited strike spiral into a broader war? Is regime change even possible? And if it is, what wou...

The United States spends more money on health care than any other country — $5.3 trillion and counting — making up 18% of the GDP, the largest share of any sector. And yet, health outcomes don’t match the investment. Compared to similar countries, the U.S. has higher child mortality, more preventable death and lower life expectancy.
Meanwhile, millions of Americans struggle to afford care. Nearly half say they’re forced to choose between medical care and basic living expenses and over a third report skipping or postponing medications or treatment because of cost.

- Description
- What does the Supreme Court’s rebuke of President Donald Trump’s tariff policy say about the limits on presidential authority? Does the court’s 6-3 decision show that constitutional checks and balances are working as intended?
The court decided Friday that the government’s collection of $133 billion dollars in tariff revenue was unlawful. How refunds will be handled, and how much money might ultimately be returned, remains unclear. That repayment process is still being resolved and could prove to be a chaotic one.
President Trump hasn’t hidden his anger at the decision, calling it a “disgrace,” adding he’s “ashamed of certain members of the court.” He also promised to pursue alternative means for maintaining his tariffs and announced plans to impose new global tariffs of up to 15% using different legal authority.
The decision is a big setback to the president’s economic agenda and his presidential authority. Tariffs have be...

- Looksmaxxing: Why young men are breaking their own jaws | Studio 2 from WHYY | 2/19/26

- What is looksmaxxing and what does it say about the state of young men in America?
The trend, which has become popular among some hyper-online young men, focuses on maximizing physical attractiveness, with rating systems for a certain vision of masculinity.
Their scoring methods judge facial harmony, distinctive gender features, low body fat and a range of physicalities, including eyebrow thickness, skin clarity, nasolabial folds, coloring and contrast, nose shape and teeth.
Although the concept originated in fringe, misogynistic online spaces, looksmaxxing terminology has moved into the mainstream among teens. It is often used jokingly, but has also become fodder for bullying and self-doubt, with people now critiquing traits such as canthal tilt or clavicle width.
Online influencers monetize these insecurities, funneling them toward AI analysis apps and increasingly extreme advice. This ranges from skincare routines and gym regimen...

- The federal government will no longer regulate greenhouse gases, including emissions from cars, trucks and power plants, in a huge reversal for climate policy.
The Trump administration announced last week it would revoke the so-called “endangerment finding,” a key Obama-era ruling underlying many federal climate limits. This scientific finding says that six planet-warming gases – including carbon dioxide and methane – pose a threat to human health, allowing the federal government to regulate them under the 1970 Clean Air Act.
Climate deregulation has long been a goal of the president, who views many of the rules as burdensome and costly to business. Trump has also repeatedly questioned climate science and has called climate change a “con job,” a “scam” and a “hoax.” He has pushed for increased fossil fuel production, including trying to revive coal production and has pulled the United States out of the Paris Agreement and the U.N. Lawmakers remain divided over the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement tactics, including use of warrants and face masks.
We’ll also discuss the fallout from the Epstein files, Trump’s approval ratings and midterm strategies and the Republican push to pass the SAVE America Act, their election overhaul that would require voters to show ID and proof of citizenship.
Closer to home, we talk about local resistance to cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Philadelphia City Council has introduced seven bills aimed at curbing ICE’s legal authority in the city. There’s also growing pushback ...

- On Monday, federal immigration agents surrounded the Montgomery County home where Guadalupe Lopez lives with her mother, her cousin, Jose Manuel Cordova Lopez, and her two younger brothers, who are 8 and 13.
In a video Lopez provided to WHYY News, she is heard screaming as she records agents busting open the door to a room where she is with her younger brothers, one of whom is heard crying.
Lopez said agents pointed guns at her brothers. The video ends when an agent knocks her phone out of her hand. Lopez said he also hit her in the side of the face.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the operation was a “targeted” attempt to detain Cordova Lopez because the Mexican national’s visa expired in December 2021 and he was charged last year with a DUI. Lopez said officers followed Cordova-Lopez's car back to the house and that he fled inside the house after being blocked in by agents. DHS alleged Cordova-Lopez “weaponized his vehi...
