- Description
- The forecast for Australia isn't as dramatic as it's been in recent weeks, but there are still some severe thunderstorms risks around the nation as more summer heat sinks southwards.
But at the same time the weather pattern south of Australia remains spring-like and messy/changeable. Poor ol' Tassie has more windy, colder, changes with that polar boundary still bringing in shots of wintry weather, including just before Christmas.
As for Christmas Day itself, still not yet locked in - but many main centres may be dry, or fairly dry, with thunderstorms and downpours most likely in the tropics. We'll update again for you tomorrow Friday!

- Description
- As we've been saying for several weeks now, we have a spring-like pattern going through December, but with summer-like temperatures. By that we mean windy, changeable, weather with injections of cold, but otherwise still plenty of hot days - especially in the east and north of NZ.
But over the coming week we do see some cold air, with the chance of snow on the mountains this weekend in the South Island and even frosts in some areas (at higher elevation).
All of NZ will feel the cooler airflow, which for some will be cold, others more refreshing.
We also have the latest on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day - the very unsettled weather pattern south of New Zealand and Australia is making it harder to lock in the forecast yet, but we have the latest.

- Description
- People in Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga are monitoring a tropical depression which today is a borderline tropical cyclone offshore east of Vanuatu, and slowly tracking eastwards towards northern Fiji.
At the time of recording this the global Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) was already calling it a tropical cyclone, but the official authority in this part of the world for naming and calling a tropical cyclone is the Fiji Met Service, and at the time of recording this they were not calling it a tropical cyclone. We explain why this happens sometimes - but overall it makes little difference to the forecast, with the low still not expected to power up a lot more than is forecast.
Because it's a borderline system please keep up to date with the Fiji Met Service. We do not have weather videos on either Tuesday or Wednesday to update you, but this video shows our best thinking as of Monday.
For the most part this will hopefully be mostly offshore and only ...

- Description
- Temperature fluctuations continue in the south with both hotter and colder changes in the mix as a spring-pattern stays alive for Tas, Vic and parts of the southern coastline. In saying that, heat will also push through - especially inland - but at times it will be hot right down to the very southern coastline.
The heat will also expand in NSW and the A.C.T a bit more in the week ahead, while most thunderstorms and showers remain in Qld for a time, NT and WA.
We're also tracking a tropical depression near the Top End this week - for now it's not looking significant, but it's worth monitoring.
Plus we have your Australia weather map for Christmas Day - and while not yet locked in we cover what the main centres may be getting and any other noticeable weather features elsewhere for December 25th.

- Description
- Severe gales, heavy West Coast rain, and temperature fluctuations are on the way as spring weather returns following a much more settled previous month.
The return of spring-weather may be frustrating for some, especially in the wind and temperature department with a cold change in the next 24 to 48 hours wiping several degrees off daytime highs, and by the end of the week or Saturday an even colder change goes up the South Island.
But in true December style most cold snaps are short lived - with further westerlies and heat on the way from Australia too, arriving as early as Sunday or next Monday. Spring-like in December can also mean some eastern, northern and inland areas can be hot.
As for Christmas Day? The forecast is not locked in due to the unsettled/stormy weather pattern south of NZ that is driving our weather. We hope by this Thursday we can lock in Christmas Eve and Day with more certainty, but we have the latest map which shows westerl...

- Queensland is more in line for wet weather this week, although WA and the NT still have plenty of showers and thunderstorms in the mix too, and some parts of NSW.
While Tas and Vic have windy weather today, with colder air around bringing plenty of showers to Tas, we do see high pressure increasing this week, lifting temperatures (for a brief time) before the next polar change arrives - spring is carrying on later this year. Drier weather is also in the forecast.
North of Australia there are tropical lows to monitor offshore, but nothing serious at this stage - and while we do see spring-like conditions in the south of Australia, that also means some hot days in the mix too.

- Description
- We have our first forecast for Christmas Eve & Day today, but this coming week looks spring-like as a colder surge of weather moves out of Tasmania and reaches NZ on Monday and Tuesday.
The incoming cold front will bring heavy West Coast rain, a dusting of snow on the Southern Alps and a burst of severe gale nor-westers before the front arrives inland. In fact that windy westerly (kicking in over the next 24 to 48 hours) will boost temperatures ahead of the more "refreshing" cold change - although for some in Southland, Fiordland and Otago there will be a burst of "cold" air twice this week, with a "wintry" change expected by late week with daytime maximum's potentially not even reaching the teens for some!
High pressure is also in the mix - bringing more dry weather and daytime heat - and we give you a look at how the weather looks to be shaping up for the big day (Christmas Day) and also Christmas Eve.

- Description
- More severe thunderstorms are expected in NSW today, while a polar change arrives in Tas on Sunday, with the risk of heavy downpours and thunderstorms looking like they will shift further into Queensland next week.
The more northern shift in thundery weather is due to the colder southerly coming into Australia's SE on Sunday/Monday, ahead of a very large high pressure system. It's this anticyclone that will balloon out into the southern half of Australia and bring a drier period of weather (some may have winds).

- NZ has a cooler/colder change coming in later today and Friday as a southerly change arrives - gone by Saturday as high pressure crosses the country. By Sunday nor'westers and subtropical airflows return, boosting temperatures again.
Even windier nor'westers kick in on Monday, with possible South Island wind warnings and West Coast rain warnings as a cold front arrives. By Tuesday night that cold front moves into the North Island with a decent temperature drop going into next Wednesday for some.
TROPICS:
A potential tropical cyclone may form this weekend near Vanuatu, then drift near Fiji and Tonga next week. At this stage it looks like a lower end storm, but it's one to monitor. We have the latest tracking maps for this tropical depression over the weekend and into next week.

- NSW is the main focus going into Thursday and Friday with thunderstorms, some severe, expected through the interior and spilling over a little into Queensland. We track this area in detail with NSW rain maps to make more sense of it.
In all other states and territories there is a mixture of long dry spells, but also isolated thunderstorms.
Around Tas and Vic (and maybe the A.C.T) a colder change on Sunday and Monday will drop temperatures with wintry temperatures around Tas for a time.
We cover Australia's Big Picture - tracking where the weather is changing or developing the most.

- A colder change is coming for southern NZ later on Thursday and into Friday, with a southerly flow going nationwide - easing humidity and heat for a number of regions.
This weekend the heat returns again, especially by Sunday, with windy nor'westers and potential severe gales developing around the South Island on Monday.
By Tuesday that windy nor'wester heads into the North Island as a cold front slowly moves up the West Coast, bringing some wet weather into the western North Island.
TROPICS
A tropical cyclone may potentially be named this weekend around Vanuatu - but it's a fairly borderline system thanks to high pressure to its south nearer to NZ. Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga may all get rain or thunderstorms from it - with a chance of strong winds for Vanuatu in particular. We show you a few maps to make sense of the current tracking/thinking.

- Heavy downpours and thunderstorms will expand across NSW in particular over the rest of this week, before high pressure moves in and clears them away to the north and east. South-east Queensland may also be affected for a time.
As always, our videos focus on where the weather is changing the most, or most intense - so if we're not talking about your area then chances are your 7 day forecast doesn't show much change.
Across Australia isolated thunderstorms and downpours will increase - but some large dry areas too.
Meanwhile in the south the next high pressure zone this weekend will usher in the polar boundary for Tasmania - but may drop temperatures along the southern coastline for a time, before moving into NSW and the A.C.T early next week.
We bring you the ups and downs across Australia weather-wise with a forecast through until next Monday.

As Phil explains, NZ is smack bang halfway between La Nina weather to our north and polar storms to our south. It's bringing spring-like weather (changeable, sometimes windy) but with summer temperatures.
We show you the highs and lows, calm and windy days, over the next week ahead.

- NSW perhaps has the main weather focus this week and weekend due to thunderstorms and pockets of heavy downpours expected to develop. While thunderstorms and showers pop up in most other states and territories at some point, NSW has more widespread and heavier chances.
Meanwhile the temperature fluctuations continue in the south and south-east with the polar boundary twice expected to drop temperatures in TAS, especially this coming Sunday.
We give you the Big Picture forecast around Australia that is driving your local weather forecast + a 7 day rainfall map to make sense of it all.

- High pressure dominates much of NZ to kick off this week - and likely returns again this weekend - but the process of this will bring temperature fluctuations, especially in the lower South Island where the polar boundary returns later this week.
Many regions lean drier this week, with cooler or more refreshing airflows coming in later in the week.
A subtropical low gets close to NZ, but high pressure should keep it offshore.
High pressure may also weaken the chances of a tropical cyclone forming late this week or weekend around Vanuatu (poses no threat to NZ).

- Showers continue along the very southern coastline of Australia and up in the tropics, while large dry areas dominate elsewhere.
Temperature fluctuations can be expected in the southern half of the nation as the polar boundary again tries to surge back in this weekend to the south-east, while ahead of it the tropical boundary bringing a hot nor'wester will boost temperatures well into the 30s.
As the cooler airflow pushes into the heat this weekend and going into Monday it will create downpours and thunderstorms (some severe) in the eastern side of NSW (especially the north-west) and Qld (especially the south-east).
Next week NSW may have even more thunderstorms and downpours as a north to north-easterly sets up.
Meanwhile a tropical depression around the Solomon Sea may turn into a severe tropical cyclone next week, but for now this poses no threat to Queensland and may well actually track away from Australia and more towards Vanuatu...

- Description
- The first tropical cyclone of the South Pacific Cyclone season may be forming next week well north of NZ with the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia most exposed. Any potential tracking into the New Zealand area will heavily depend on high pressure which is expected to be moving in to our nation a week from now. For now this is just one to monitor but poses no immediate threat to New Zealand - but it's positioning on the planet means it may track towards us at some point.
In the meantime NZ is about to heat up and dry out - with Australian and sub-tropical nor'westers kicking in those in the east, the north and inland areas of both main islands will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s temperature-wise between now and mid-next week. There will also be some brief cooler changes in the mix as airflows shift around a little for some regions.
Rainfall is low over the coming week - except for the southern half of the western South Island.

Meanwhile late next week well north of NZ around the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu we may see our first South-West Pacific tropical cyclone - although at this early stage it can't be locked in, but we talk about where it may form.

Before this happens hotter weather pushes into SA, NSW and Qld, then the temperature drop this weekend will spark thunderstorms, some severe, into eastern NSW and south-east Qld.
WA has thunderstorms here and there, but not too many action in WA or NT at this stage.
Meanwhile Vic, Tas and the ACT will all notice temp changes in the coming days as more polar air moves around Tas in particular.

- A large low pressure system is bringing unstable weather conditions to most of the North Island today, resulting in downpours, thunderstorms (some severe) but also a mixture of dry and drizzly/lighter areas.
Low pressure systems like this are well known for "breaking" your local forecast, this is due to the instability the lower air pressure creates - and then our mountains and ranges play a role too. This means very heavy downpours can occur in one spot, while only a short distance away it may be sunny and dry. Understanding this will lead you to watching the rain radar and understanding where these main areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms are tracking across the day.
Otherwise, put simply, there is some wind and rain (over the North Island and upper South Island today/tonight) with it clearing the country on Thursday, gone by the end of tomorrow.
The weekend has west to north-west winds returning, which means many places will be warmer/hotter...

- Areas of rain, thunderstorms, and instability will be crossing NZ over the next 48 hours, with some heavy rain around the North Island, although our mountains and ranges may break that into patchy or more showery weather for others. Low pressure can be notoriously unpredictable.
Thunderstorms and instability can break rainfall forecasts - especially when a large low pressure system is moving in - producing heavier falls than expected in some areas, especially if slow moving. This is especially true for the northern and eastern sides of the North Island over the next couple of days. One positive is that very dry eastern areas of both main islands may get the rain relief they have been wanting for a while now.
Severe thunderstorms are also possible - these don't always have to have thunder and lightning, it's all about the large type of cloud build-up, and these can create very heavy slow moving rain.

- La Niña has officially developed, but it's worth noting the conditions have been around since September with an official announcement needing to lock in these conditions at a particular threshold - which happened last week.
Australia's Bureau of Meteorology has been consistent for months about it likely forming in late spring/early summer and that it looks fairly weak and short lived. While many news outlets report an official La Niña declaration as if a switch has been flicked the conditions have been in our weather maps for months, so we don't see any sudden change to our weather pattern around New Zealand and Australia. But the South Pacific islands may get more rain and humidity due to decreased air pressure.
At the same time that La Niña has formed, a vigorous stormy pattern remains over the Southern Ocean area, frequently bringing cold blasts into the south-east quarter of Australia over November, but only brushing the southern South Island of NZ at t...

By early next week an East Coast storm may send gales - or at least just windy weather- into NSW, the A.C.T and a large part of Vic.
After this is high pressure - and that may help ease heat/humidity and thunderstorms in Queensland - but will drag that same heat and humidity further southwards into WA next week.

But elsewhere there is certainly no shortage of heat - and with tropical heat and humidity combining with low pressure areas and incoming cooler airflows it's the perfect recipe for thunderstorms - some severe - across most of the states and territories at some stage. This makes the weather pattern messier around New Zealand and while we do have high pressure coming in this weekend it's going to be challenged next week by a sub-tropical low, a Tasman Sea low and a very large Southern Ocean low. Certainly busy weather maps.
Today (Friday) and this weekend is largely settled - but there will be some cloudy areas, isolated showers/downpours and isolated daytime/early evening thunderstorms possible. Large dry areas.
Next week there's a brief cold change in the south of the South Island, then the week heats up as nor'westers build, potentially bringing temperatures into the upper 20s, even the lower 30s.
We have your 7 day forecast...

- Description
- Thunderstorms and showers will pop up across parts of Australia over the next week as tropical heat sinks south and south-eastwards, boosting humidity and daytime temperatures for many places.
However the polar boundary and cooler southerly-quarter airflows will continue to bring temperature changes - so as places heat up next week, many may then be followed by a cool change.
Thunderstorms, some severe, are forecast - along with large dry areas.
And of course Tropical Cyclone Fina - please see our special video out about that today here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za51I_Nffgw

- Description
- Special Update --- Tropical Cyclone Fina is now a Category 2 storm just north of the Top End, with the cyclone likely to turn south to south-westwards over the next 24 hours, before passing over (or nearby) to Darwin, most likely on Saturday PM.
Damaging winds and rainfall of 300 to 500mm are possible in Darwin and surrounds - but more details will come during Friday's update (and from the Bureau of Meteorology).
We cover the wind, rain, tracking and compare models showing Fina's likely tracking over the days and week ahead.
Our next update on Fina will be later on Friday morning Australia time.

- NZ: Afternoon downpours, high pressure and a subtropical low

- Description
- New Zealand is halfway between the building La Nina conditions in the tropics north of us, and the stormier than usual weather south of the nation - bringing variety to our weather in the weeks ahead.
We have a taste of this set up over the next 7 days with a subtropical low next week moving towards the upper North Island while at the same time a huge storm in the Southern Ocean may affect the very south.
But we have a lot of high pressure surrounding NZ in the coming days - bringing hotter, drier, weather for many - but also the risk of some afternoon or evening downpours and isolated thunderstorms. It's the high pressure belt separating the La Nina conditions in the north from the stormy weather to New Zealand's south. A few moving parts to monitor at the moment.
*Apologies for the flickering onscreen in the final map today.

- Description
- Tropical Cyclone FINA has been named by the Bureau of Meteorology and may become a Category 2 cyclone within the next 24 hours, posing some threat to Darwin and surrounds this weekend. We explain the storm's position and expected tracking over the next 7 days.
Elsewhere a large low in southern WA may produce severe thunderstorms today, while tomorrow thunderstorms start to form in eastern NSW and south-east Queensland.
The polar boundary is returning to Tas for a time, while cooler southerlies will affect the southern coastline - but next week the tropical heat southwards over SA, Qld and NSW.
It's a busy forecast and an extended video today.

- Description
- Heavy rain continues to move along the north-east of the North Island today with drier weather coming in behind it.
Over the days ahead high pressure will increase around NZ but will be centred offshore - so a few showers are possible in both main islands this weekend, but with large dry areas.
Next week a large subtropical low will likely drift southwards towards NZ with an increasing easterly wind in the north... but high pressure around southern NZ may weaken this low, or limit how far south it can track. It's still not locked in - but we show you the latest.

- Description
- There is the chance of a tropical cyclone this week north of Darwin and it may affect the Top End and the Kimberley. Australia's Bureau of Meteorology has increased their cyclone outlook from a moderate risk yesterday, to today a high risk of cyclone formation.
But as we discuss it's still a messy forecast - and it's definitely unclear about intensity and precise tracking (and therefore where is most exposed to it). We expect these details to become clearer over the next 24 - 48 hours.
Elsewhere there are some very large dry areas, but windy weather is likely in the coming days in parts of the lower half of Australia, and into the eastern side of NSW to Victoria. High pressure mostly remains south of Australia in the coming week, but Tassie has a chance of it passing over them (a nice change!).
The polar boundary isn't done with southern Australia either - but we also see a shot of hotter tropical air reaching coastal SA for a time. More spring up...

- NZ: Heavy rain coming upper NI & West Coast, high pressure returning too
- Runtime

- Description
- New Zealand's weather is coming in from a number of directions over the coming week as large high pressure east of NZ combines with both a subtropical flow and a westerly flow to drive in heavy West Coast rain and pockets of heavy rain in the upper North Island.
The main time frame for wet weather is between now and Thursday morning, with a surge of gusty nor'westers today (potentially severe gale for a time through the Southern Alps).
But high pressure returns to NZ over the coming week, but that may also cause some daytime showers or downpours in a few northern and inland locations.
The polar boundary also briefly returns to the lower South Island - nothing major but a dip in temperatures coming.
We also have your 7 day rainfall map to make sense of it all.

- Description
- A tropical depression may form into the first tropical cyclone of the season later this week, but it's still NOT locked in at this stage. However various computer models continue to show a powerful cyclone by Friday west of Darwin, other modelling shows a lazier low with rain and thunderstorms but not as much wind. We'll have more details in the days ahead once we can lock in if it will form into a tropical storm or not. The Bureau (BoM) is now also indicating a "moderate" risk later this week.
Elsewhere high pressure remains mostly offshore but does bring some drier areas, but also some windier weather in the southern states over the coming week. Showers will continue in some areas, but there are some large dry stretches in the mix too for many.
And that polar boundary won't go away just yet - it's bringing further pulses of colder southerlies across Australia's southern coastline at times. In fact, there's a growing chance we may see it lingering off and on ...

- We're in between highs this week which means NZ has warmer, subtropical, winds in the mix - but also some cooler airflows brushing the southern South Island.
Rain may be heavy on both the West Coast and some upper North Island regions, in particular Bay of Plenty.
Temperatures look to be above normal for many this week following a weekend cool down.
We have your NZ forecast to Sunday as powerful offshore high pressure zones continue to mix up our weather.

- Description
- Severe thunderstorms are in the forecast for Qld, NT and WA over the weekend and/or next week, but a polar southerly will help cut that humidity back for some next week as it pushes the tropical boundary back northwards too.
Cold changes continue in the south and south-east, with Vic and Tas most exposed to these.
And we focus on the tropical depression near Darwin that may become a tropical cyclone, but as we show you the modelling is not yet in agreement.

- NZ 7 Day: Incoming cold front, but warmer air next week (14/11/25)

- Description
- A cold front is moving into the South Island today and tonight and will cover the island by early Saturday dropping temperatures and bringing West Coast rain and a few showers elsewhere. This front will weaken further on Saturday as it moves into the western and upper North Island, but some isolated heavy falls are possible for a brief time as it moves in.
Sunday morning will be colder/cooler in a number of places too, but by Sunday afternoon temperatures lift up - with subtropical airflows in the mix next week, along with nor'westers too, helping drive up temperatures again.
Windy weather also kicks back in again around Tuesday and Wednesday with possible severe gales (like around inland Canterbury) for a time.
A few thunderstorms and showers are expected next week - with another potential cool down for some places by the end of next week.
We have your 7 day rainfall map and latest soil moisture maps too.

- NZ: Brief polar airflow coming, but the subtropics visit next week! (13/11/25)
- Runtime

- Description
- Low pressure is dropping southwards today, over the South Island leaving some heavy showers in its wake for the upper North Island.
A short lived cold snap will spread up the South Island on Friday PM (or overnight) and into Saturday where it reaches the lower North Island - before clearing most places by Saturday night. It will bring lower morning temperatures to both islands over the weekend, but by next week the subtropical airflow returns thanks to a huge and strong anticyclone east of the country. This will scoop mild air from Rarotonga and Tonga and drag it down over most of the country for a time.
But the weather pattern remains messy, with plenty of showers coming into the nation over the next week - along with some large dry areas.
Despite the brief cold change, most places will likely be warmer than average for this time of year over the coming 7 days due to the prolonged northerly or subtropical flow.
