- We have your forecast for this weekend, next week, Waitangi Day and the long weekend next weekend as high pressure grows around the country. Many regions will have more "summer like" weather, but on Monday/Tuesday a burst of wind, rain and a temperature drop is expected as a low tracks south of the country.
But by the end of Tuesday the next big high is rolling in - and should bring a fairly settled week next week. It's still a week away, so can't be locked in with total certainty yet, but there is the chance of a little bit of wet weather on Waitangi Day in the lower half of the South Island (we'll lock that in with more detail in our Monday update). High pressure is still expected for the long weekend in many regions.

Our next ClimateWatch update (monthly outlook) will be on Monday, Feb 2, taking a look at the bigger picture driving our weather going through the month of February.

- Description
- Excessive heat carries on today and into Saturday - but those near the southern coastline with notice the cooler change arriving, with those further inland feeling it by Sunday as a southerly change comes in following days of extreme heat. This will push that heat to the northern border of NSW and into inland Qld going into next week - and those in WA will also feel some hotter days as higher pressure moves south of the nation.
In the tropics it's hard to get a firm grasp of where wet weather will precisely be, with various weather models at odds over a large pool of low pressure - and if it will remain large and lazy, or potential spin up into a tropical cyclone around the Gulf of Carpentaria. Keep up to date with BoM this weekend to monitor that.
Meanwhile, next week the eastern side of NSW and Qld has some wet weather chances - and inland areas of both states should start to see thunderstorms and heavy downpours - but precisely where is harder to confirm, a...

- We take a closer look at the excessive heat continuing today, Friday and Saturday in the south-eastern quarter of Australia, in particular SA, Vic and NSW. A cooler/colder change comes in on Sunday and Sunday night for many and the extreme heat pushes further northwards into inland Queensland.
There's an unofficial tropical cyclone today north of Norfolk Island - it's not going to last long and will only bring some wet weather and higher humidity to Norfolk Island.
From a rain/showers/thunderstorms point of view across Australia it's a messy forecast - with no definite answer as to who will all get rain, but we show you two of the world's leading rain forecasters side by side to give you at least a general idea as to which areas have the better chances of rain and which places are more likely to lean dry over the next 7 days.

- Description
- A cold front is moving up the South Island today, and falling apart, but high pressure is coming in behind it, bringing a warmer/hotter weekend. By Monday, Feb 2, a low south of NZ will bring a burst of windier weather, southern and western rain, northern showers/downpours - and a colder southerly change, dropping temperatures for much of NZ going through Monday and/or Tuesday.
By Tuesday though, high pressure again retuns and may linger over much of the nation going into Waitangi Day and the long weekend.
This morning an unofficial tropical cyclone had formed south of Fiji and well north of NZ. It's a borderline system and will be short lived and is fast leaving the tropics. It's not a named storm for these reasons. It will fall apart in the next 36 hours and won't bring severe weather to NZ based on any modelling we've seen, because of so much high pressure in our part of the world.

- More extreme heat will continue today, Thursday, Friday and Saturday before a cooler/colder change comes in on Sunday dropping temperatures in the south and south-east of the nation, and nudging the heat back northwards for a time.
Between the heat and the cooler air we will have thunderstorms and wet weather, with NSW perhaps getting the lion's share of that next week (although we're still waiting another day or two to really confirm that).
WA, the NT and Qld all have showers and thunderstorms with the chance of heavy rain next week around the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Norfolk Island also has the chance of an ex-tropical low bringing some rain/showers and humidity.
If you live in the southern western half of WA we aren't talking too much about you in today's update with mostly dry, easterly driven, weather on the way.

- High pressure covers New Zealand today and despite a weak cold front coming in to southern NZ on Thursday more high pressure returns going into the weekend. But, there is a catch - on Monday a burst of cold air from the sub-antarctic region south of NZ will move in, bringing rain, some thunderstorms and showers, gale force winds and even a dusting of snow on the Southern Alps.
The good news, for those sick of the wind and cold, is that more high pressure comes in after it and may well linger into the long Waitangi weekend. We don't yet have a forecast for the long weekend, but we do have a map for Waitangi Day to help make sense of what may be shaping up.
Lastly, there is a tropical depression between Vanuatu and Fiji and while it's close to being a tropical cyclone it's expected to fall apart before reaching NZ due to high pressure over us - but it may bring a few showers and higher humidity and heat to those in Northland this weekend (but no severe weather i...

We track the heat and temperature changes over the coming week and into early February.
An ex-tropical cyclone in central WA will bring heavy rain to remote areas, and links up to a line of convergence (cloud build-ups, showers, thunderstorms) right to the southern coastal of WA to the east, and may spillover a bit into SA.
Windy weather continues in parts of NSW, the A.C.T, Vic and SA - further fuelling the heat and the extreme fire risk. But a colder change should arrive by Sunday or Monday in the south-east.
Meanwhile there are tropical lows to monitor, one around the Gulf of Carpentaria and two more out towards Fiji - none of them are confirmed to be cyclones, but all three lows have that potential next week.

The high pressure isn't overly powerful and so we may still get showers, isolated thunderstorms, and even a little bit of wind in some areas by Thursday - but compared to the past week it will be much more settled with minimal chance of severe weather.
We're monitoring the tropics - low pressure zones around Fiji may form into tropical storms as we go into February, but for now they are well away from NZ.
Monday next week, Feb 2, we may get a burst of windier weather and western and southern rain as high pressure slips east of NZ, so make the most of the final week of weather in January!

We break it down for you as there are a lot of moving parts (hence the longer runtime of our video today - normally we aim for 8 minute updates).
Next week the low finally moves off NZ and winds become lighter in many places as higher air pressure moves in - but with that comes the added risk of daytime thunderstorms and downpours, especially inland areas. Two tropical lows to monitor - the main one at this stage is for the Kimberley this weekend with a possible tropical cyclone coming in, then helping create heavy downpours and severe thunderstorms down central/eastern WA to the southern coastline - next week this may drift further into SA but for now SA and Vic look mainly dry.
The heat is expanding too - excessive heat (which is usually over 40 degrees) will push into SA, NSW, the A.C.T and inland Vic.
Tas isn't too unsettled but there are some ups and downs with temperatures as high pressure zones move through.

Rain has eased in a number of North Island regions but drizzle and showers can still be expected, especially in the west, along with windy westerlies developing.
As we go into Friday PM and Saturday AM a colder southerly change moves up the South Island with a dusting of snow likely on the peaks of the Southern Alps on Friday night (above about 1800m). Humidity eases further for those in the north where it has been very muggy for the past day or two. Single digit overnight lows are expected across inland parts of the South Island and Central North Island on Saturday morning, but winds in the North Island will have more of a westerly lean to them - helping dry out eastern areas of the upper North Island.

We track the temperature changes in the week ahead across the nation, also the downpours and thunderstorms (not too many of them to be honest, but the tropics and top half of Australia has the highest chance). There may also be some wet weather in the south-east for a time too, but rainfall totals don't look like much.

- Description
- A tropical low is coming into New Zealand mid to late this week with heavy rain and severe gales, along with extremely high humidity for a time around the North Island in particular.
Some regions may see one or two month's worth of rain in just a couple of days, in places that have already had more rain than usual in recent weeks. Slips and flooding are possible, especially around the North Island and maybe even some parts of the South Island. The low is interacting with other low pressure in the area and this means forecasts are still going to change a bit in the coming days as it's slightly messy in it's setup.
By Friday and Saturday a colder/cooler/refreshing southerly comes in - but again, heads up campers, trampers and boaties - more gales are possible for a time as the low moves south-east of NZ and those southerly winds come in.

In the south-east of Australia easterly winds will kick in over the coming week, gusty at times in southern and coastal parts of NSW and into Vic (esp near the mountains/ranges).
Large dry areas are in the mix going into the next week with fewer rain events and thunderstorms in the southern half of the nation, although coastal NSW certainly has plenty of cloudy and showery/wet days in the mix.

- A colder, cooler or more refreshing change (depending on how you view it) is moving into New Zealand over today and the weekend, dropping humidity levels in northern NZ and bringing some cold nights into the South Island interior this weekend.
But next week high pressure will be in southern NZ while a deepening tropical low (still unclear if it will be a tropical cyclone or just a tropical depression) will sink southwards - this will create a windy easterly flow into NZ, especially the upper North Island, likely tilting more north-east late week as the low moves in with the chance of heavy rain and severe gales. But it's still a week away, so we need more time to lock it in with more precision.

Windy weather is likely to blow through parts of NSW, the A.C.T and Vic, and eases further going into SA and WA.
A tropical depression in the Coral Sea may turn into a tropical cyclone next week - current modelling indicates that Norfolk Island may get strong winds and heavy rain, but the tracking isn't locked in yet - neither is the certainty of it becoming an official tropical cyclone. - Low pressure covers central and northern parts of NZ today with higher humidity and downpours and hit and miss thunderstorms, with cooler airflows coming in to the south and east over the coming weekend. The cooler airflow is due to high pressure that will be situated south of New Zealand, dredging up subantarctic air in some regions.
But next week a low pressure zone leaving the tropics (around New Caledonia) may form into a tropical cyclone and drift southwards towards NZ. It's likely the anticyclone south of NZ will affect the tracking of this low - and while the forecast one week from now is not yet locked in, the latest maps do suggest rain, wind and tropical humidity may affect the North Island.

- To quote the Little River Band, it's time for a Cool Change - with daytime temperatures dropping in a number of regions, especially those in the south and east of both main islands, over the days ahead.
The reason? A large anticyclone south of Tasmania. This strong high pressure zone is dredging up subantarctic air and pushing it into southern and eastern regions in the coming days. Some places only have maximum temperatures in the low to upper teens - quite the contrast to the mid to upper 30s some places had over the weekend.
The cool (or cold for some) air may hang around for a number of days - not the greatest beach weather in some locations, but not all regions are as affected - especially those in the north and west going into the weekend.

There are at least four low pressure zones to monitor this week, three of them having tropical or subtropical connections.
A tropical cyclone near New Caledonia is possible later this week or weekend. It's not locked in yet, with so many other lows in the region sometimes they can "steal energy" off each other, making for large lazy lows rather than one particularly aggressive one. Heat will increase this week thanks to a pulse of hot nor'westers out of Australia, making for a hot Friday, Saturday and Sunday with some places (like inland Hawke's Bay) potentially reaching the mid 30s this weekend. However coastal parts of Southland and Otago may well be cooler over the coming week.
Rain returns to the West Coast this weekend and by Sunday a surge of damaging nor'west gales is possible around the South Island and lower North Island - not locked in yet but certainly showing up for a few days in long range maps.
We tracks the lows, the highs, the thunderstorms and temperature fluctuations.
Programming Notes:
- We are not in our usual studio set-up this week, so apologies if the videos visually appear a little different (back to normal from Monday next week)

- Description
- We have the latest forecast for New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and the first two weeks of January. While the longer range forecast may well change, it shows a theme of high pressure zones tracking along just south of Australia while tropical areas of low pressure continue to meander around.
A few thunderstorms, some severe, may form around Qld and NSW in particular (outside of the usual tropical ones).
We track the temperature changes and the wet/dry weather.
Remember, long range forecasts will change - but the Big Picture long range animation shows generally the likely weather expected around the Australia region.
Programming Notes:
- Phil is offscreen for a couple of weeks providing some video updates still (we're not in our usual studio so apologies if anythings look different)
- We are taking a short break - this is our final video. Our next video update will be on Tuesday January 6th.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

- Description
- Drier weather, hotter days and lighter winds are all coming - but between now and Sunday there will still be windy areas, wet weather, and severe thunderstorms.
On Friday and Saturday a southerly flow will work northwards up the nation, bringing some colder winds for a time in the southern South Island and alpine areas, and a cooler morning for a number of regions around NZ on Sunday (although nothing major). There will be more thunderstorms and downpours in both main islands over the coming days.
But during Sunday and Monday high pressure expands over the country bringing lighter winds and hotter days - and a few inland downpours and thunderstorms.
A tropical low is worth monitoring near Fiji next week - but for now poses no threat to NZ, and doesn't look overly serious. Still, it's in a part of the world where they can power up suddenly.

- Severe Category 4 Tropical Cyclone Hayley is approaching the Kimberley and will move in on New Year's Eve with conditions already deteriorating. While this storm is hitting a remote part of WA we cover which towns are closest to it.
There is a large low still over Queensland, bringing more rain and thunderstorms over the coming week as it unravels. Low pressure continues around the top half of Australia.
Meanwhile the southern part of Australia looks drier overall, with some cooler airflows in the mix off the Southern Ocean.
We track Australia's weather through to Monday of next week.

- Description
- Many people are asking us when "summer weather" will return - and we have more traditional summer-like weather on the way, but we have to get through the large, deep, low pressure zone first. That low is creating more gales and heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms over the last two days of 2025 - then starts to ease and clear away over the first couple of days of January.
As we go into this weekend high pressure builds and while some may have a cooler southerly flow for a time, the skies will dry out further going into Sunday with hotter, drier, weather thanks to high pressure likely kicking off next week.
There is a subtropical low to keep an eye on, dropping south from Fiji next week, but it looks large but lazy and fairly weak - and apart from some easterlies in northern NZ it's, for now, not expected to bring rain. But we'll monitor it and will have more details tomorrow with a special 14 day outlook.

- Description
- Tropical Cyclone Hayley has formed and will likely impact part of the Kimberley just north of Broome with a burst of wind and some heavy rain. Meanwhile in Qld a large area of low pressure is going to bring some heavy, slow moving, rain and thunderstorms to both eastern and western parts of the state, in the tropics. Further southwards into NSW and A.C.T and Vic it is much drier, but some inland thunderstorms and showers are coming.
Apart from a few showers Tas is looking more settled, less windy but the heat may still not be there for all due to cooler/refreshing southerly airflows, which may affect large parts of coastal southern Australia at times.
Phil tracks the highs and lows in Australia's Big Picture weather outlook, through to this Sunday.
Next update: Tomorrow/Tuesday.

- A depression west of the upper North Island is helping bring rain and strong winds to parts of New Zealand, today, tonight and into Tuesday. Generally speaking the wind and rain is tracking down the North Island and will stop around the upper half of the South Island as high pressure grows in the south.
We track the movement of the windiest weather, and which areas are most exposed to rain - but we also take a look at when the winds ease and drier weather comes in.
New Year's Eve looks look intense weather-wise, but with low pressure in the area it's going to spark some daytime and early evening downpours and thunderstorms, especially around the western and upper North Island.
New Year's Day sees much larger dry areas and the winds easing further for most, although may still be a little windy in some spots - our video explains more. Still more daytime downpours and possible thunderstorms.

- There is low pressure in the north, high pressure to the south - and that's mixing up the temperatures in some places.
Low pressure around the tropics is driving in some heavy rain areas in the coming week to Qld, NT and WA - but especially around Qld in the top half from east to west.
There are more refreshing airflows continuing in the southern coastal areas, for example Melbourne has maximum temperatures between just +17 degrees and +29 degrees.
We track Australia's weather and rainfall for the next 7 days ahead.

- Heavy rain and damaging wind gusts are expected to descend down the nation over the coming days bringing a wet and windy end to the year in a number of locations - although not everyone has wind and rain as our mountains and ranges break up the flow. The mountains and ranges also enhance the wind and rain, making it more intense for others.
Heavy rain and strong wind warnings are expected to increase from MetService as the low moves in.
There is some good news - the weather is likely to break up more going into New Year's Eve and New Year's Day with less severe weather around and fewer warnings expected.
We break down the wind, rain, dry, calm and thunderstorm risk over the coming week as we say farewell to 2025 and hello to 2026.

- We've got Christmas Day and Boxing Day covered, plus the last weekend forecast for 2025 - then we focus on what is building up towards New Year's Eve.
Thunderstorms are mainly in the northern half of the nation, but a few will form in the south, along with more windy and colder/cooler/refreshing changes in the mix.
The south-east corner of Oz looks coolest - while the northern half and south-west corner of WA looks hottest, although a cool down is coming for southern WA again after Christmas Day.
We have the latest on Tropical Cyclone Grant, heading to Cocos, and a couple of other tropical low pressure zones near the Kimberley and FNQ next week (nothing major showing up yet).
Programming Note: This is Phil's last onscreen video forecast for 2025, but he will be back this weekend (either Saturday or Sunday) with an offscreen update as we head towards New Year's Eve and the start of 2026.

- Description
- Low pressure looks to be driving New Zealand's weather more as we enter the final 7 days of 2025.
For Christmas Day and Boxing Day the nation lies between high pressure north of NZ and low pressure near the lower South Island. This will mean more windy west to north-west winds for a number of places off and on over the next couple of days.
Low pressure looks to move in more-so on Sunday and into next week - but doesn't mean wind or rain for everyone, there will still be long dry spells and mild to hot weather in the mix. But colder air flows do flirt with the lower South Island and the West Coast has heavy rain at times.
Large lows don't always bring wet and windy weather - sometimes our mountains and ranges can make for very sunny, calm, weather but it's worth noting that sudden downpours or showers can also form due to the instability.
New Year's Eve is still not locked in - but we'll have more details this coming weekend about that...

- Description
- A large high pressure zone should ensure a fair amount of dry weather over the southern half of Australia on Christmas Day, with the south-east corner (including Tasmania) definitely feeling cooler air flows, some might even call them wintry in Tas.
The top half of Australia will be hotter and more humid, with low pressure zones bringing thunderstorms and wet weather areas into the mix.
Hottest main centre looks to be Perth, getting up to close to 40 degrees. Coolest main centre will be Hobart, with a high of 12 (although may go a bit higher if the sun comes out and the winds ease).
Many places look dry - but a few locations in the north/tropics may be quite wet. We break it down for you.
There's also a low in the Coral Sea worth monitoring next week (not looking like a storm at this stage), meanwhile in WA offshore a tropical cyclone is looking more likely - but too early to lock in. Broome looks to be the nearest main centre to that...

A similar weather pattern remains for Boxing Day and going into the weekend for some - as potentially more low pressure moves in.
Coldest weather will be in the lower one third of the South Island, hottest weather in the eastern North Island.

Many of the main centres don't look too bad, but Melbourne and Hobart may be the coldest/coolest. Much of Tasmania looks caught up in a windier south-west flow around then.
In the tropics we're seeing much more life as far as daily downpours and thunderstorms are concerned, with larger parts of Queensland also seeing more thunderstorms.

It's an unsettled forecast for the rest of the year - but not all will have bad weather, with large dry areas in the mix and also some heat still coming too (especially in the north and east of both islands).
But southern and south-western parts of the South Island (and at times the lower North Island) have the most changeable weather coming in.

Wintry weather again brushes Tas with some windy weather in the days leading up to Christmas.
We cover 7 day rainfall across Australia with this video forecast out to Boxing Day.

- Description
- A cold snap is moving up NZ today and Saturday, before easing Sunday and clearing most places on Monday - it will bring a drop in temperatures nationwide, a burst of windy weather, some rain/showers and isolated thunderstorms, and a dusting of snow on the Southern Alps, maybe even some on the highest North Island mountains.
There is also a frost risk this weekend and on Monday morning in some regions.
Next week the westerlies crank back up again - boosting the heat in the east, especially the eastern North Island.
Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day all look similar - westerlies may be blowing in the north and central areas, some West Coast rain (and western North Island isolated showers) and colder air stuck around the lower third of the South Island. This is still not locked in yet - but the forecast is becoming clearer.
We also have a 7 day rainfall map to make sense of it all.
