Description: For the first time this year a southerly from off Antarctica is heading towards the South Island, followed by more polar air going into the weekend along with large dry areas developing.

The polar boundary, which surges over NZ at times during winter, will go as far north as Australia's Norfolk Island - meaning everyone in NZ will feel the colder airflow this weekend.

We track snow, rain and wind flows over the next few days, weekend and into early next week.

We're also monitoring a new low in the Tasman Sea next week.

Description: While it's not overly stormy we do have polar air returning to Tas, Vic, the A.C.T, southern NSW and south-eastern SA over the next day or two, with snow on the hills and ranges of Tas, Vic and NSW.

The colder southerly wind will be felt as far north as Queensland. Qld does have eastern coastal showers but they are fairly isolated with large dry areas. Over the next day or two most of the showers are actually in FNQ.

Warmer/milder weather will return to WA but a low around Monday next week could help trigger some wet weather further north into the state.

Description: Friday will be a wintry day across NZ as the next cold front arrives, bringing snow to lower levels of the South Island and across the mountains, ranges and also Central Plateau of the North Island. Snow may go lower than it did this past weekend - although amounts and exact details are still being worked out.

Before this arrives, high pressures crosses the country meaning more frosts as far north as Auckland and Northland overnight tonight/Wednesday morning. By Thursday nor'west winds will be blowing nationwide and should lift temperatures a bit.

The weekend looks cold nationwide - although the wet weather risks have backed off in a number of regions. This is a bit of a change from yesterday's video update - which means we'll need another day or so to confirm just what is happening this weekend, but for now ...

Description: Wintry weather is certainly moving into Vic, Tas, the A.C.T and brushing southern NSW and south-east SA over the next 48 hours, as the polar boundary lifts northwards bringing cold air behind it.

Rainfall isn't too big, although the west coast of Tas will be the most likely place for heavy showers, along with some coastal parts of Vic.

FNQ also has the chance of some heavy downpours with an unrelated burst of showers north of roughly Townsville over the coming week.

We'll see a few showers and more cloud moving back into parts of eastern Australia, while most of the NT and WA have dry weather, other than mostly coastal showers in the south and south-west of WA.

Description: High pressure will cross NZ over the next few days meaning more cold nights/mornings with frosts, but a nor'wester will develop and spread up the country mid to late week, ending/limiting frosts for a time and dragging in more cloud with showers and rain. Some of this will turn to snow from Thursday night in the South Island and into the North Island's mountains and ranges going into Friday and the weekend.

By Saturday the polar boundary will be well north of NZ, bringing colder weather and showers (and snow flurries higher up) across both main islands, and a burst of wintry weather for the eastern side of the country (Otago northwards) with rain, sleet, snow and cold south to south-east winds.

Description: There's a powerful high moving across southern Australia in the days ahead and will bring large dry areas as far north as the Top End and as far east as NSW as it moves in from WA. On the edges of this high we have the cold snap affecting the south-east of Australia (especially southern and eastern Vic and Tas).

Next week there is another injection of colder weather, but modelling today has reduced this a little due to the shape and size of this next incoming high, meaning the coldest of this weather will be for Tas and Vic. Tas also has the chance of severe gales with the next cold blast.

There's still the risk of some downpours in northern Qld too, from Tully to Cairns and Port Douglas, otherwise showers are fairly short lived and isolated along the eastern side of Australia, while the western side of the nation stays mostly dry other than a few showers in the mix for south-western WA.

Description: Downpours, some squally with the chance of thunderstorms and even small tornadoes are possible for parts of NZ over Friday PM and Saturday AM as a cold change sweeps over NZ. The sub-antarctic airflow will drop temperatures right across NZ, bringing snow to low levels for a time overnight tonight and Saturday for the South Island, and then snow on the Central Plateau and North Island mountains/ranges going through the weekend.

There will be large dry areas in the mix - and not everyone will have gusty winds, but there is a surge of potentially severe gale west to south-westerlies along the western North Island and around Auckland on Saturday.

Description: There are two noticeable cold snaps coming for south-eastern Australia over the next week, but in between them will be a very large high pressure zone, ensuring that most inland areas are dry. There is one exception - Queensland, which may have some inland wet weather expanding across the state for a time.

Description: Nor-west winds will be building over parts of NZ going into Thursday with rain on the West Coast becoming heavy - then colder air arriving at night and across Friday for the South Island. By Saturday the polar airflow boundary will surge right across NZ from the Deep South up to the Far North.

Snow is possible to low levels in the lower South Island - but the snow level itself moves around a bit and there are some large dry areas in the mix. Description: A burst of wintry weather is coming in for Tas, but will also affect Vic and parts of SA, along with southern parts of NSW and around the A.C.T. From a moisture point of view it's not looking overly wet for northern parts of Vic and going into NSW. Most of the wet weather will be on Tasmania's west coast with up to 150mm coming, and along Victoria's southern coastline. Snow is expected above 600 to 800m (and may go lower in Tasmania for a time).

Description: High pressure still covers NZ but that will slide offshore as we go into Friday and the weekend as a polar southerly change arrives. Snow levels continue to move around, but early estimates suggest snow may fall below 200m for a time in the lower South Island (Southland and Otago) and in the North Island may get down to 600m around Central Plateau - but it's worth noting that wind directions matter and some areas may have a low snow level but dry skies along with it.

Central Plateau looks to get snow on the highways, along with the South Island's alpine passes - and other South Island highways may be impacted.

Description: West to north-west winds blow through the South Island and lower North Island today bring heavy West Coast rain and thunderstorms. While large parts of the North Island are drier, there is a front clearing today to the east and a few showers possible behind it.

Showers continue off and on this week, especially in western regions of both main islands. Eastern areas are drier and milder than they have been but it may be a bit windy today and there are a couple of colder pulses of air for the lower half of the South Island and out over the Chatham Islands coming in over the days ahead.

Description: There are large dry areas in the forecast this week and weekend across Australia but heavy rain is possible, especially in coastal NSW (north of Port Macquarie) and potentially up to about Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. It's not heavy and widespread for everyone, but an offshore trough/weak low may encourage repetitive downpours, lifting rainfall totals.

Today, of course, it's wet around parts of SA, Vic and Tas as a windy west to south-westerly flow continues and more snow flurries expected for the ski fields and higher elevation areas from Tas to southern NSW and around the mountains of the A.C.T.

Description: Westerlies kick back in again this week which will bring a break to those in the east as far as wet weather is concerned, with the bulk of the rain and showers affecting western NZ.

Description: A wintry change of weather will move into the south-east of Australia over the coming days and while it does bring some snow chances back to the skifields it's not overly cold for many regions. But Tasmania is more caught up in the cold with polar airflows frequently in the mix along with heavy west coast showers and potential gales. This set-up also affects Vic to a lesser degree, but the windier and colder/cooler weather may also affect some parts of SA, NSW and the A.C.T.

Meanwhile eastern coastal Australia has more offshore showers moving in until that westerly change arrives.

Description: Wet weather and cloud continues along the eastern side of the country with the heaviest rain now moving into northern Hawke's Bay and surrounding regions. Driest weather, for the most part, is along the western side of NZ.

It may be quite cloudy along eastern NZ before sunrise tomorrow/Matariki.

But this weekend high pressure is moving in and should bring lighter winds, drier skies and clearer skies - leading the way to some heavy frosts through the South Island's interior and frosty weather spreading into the North Island more so on Sunday.

By the start of next week northerly quarter winds kick in, with nor'westers picking up in the South Island and the lower North Island - ahead of the next cold front as we go through next week.

Description: Showers continue along the eastern side of Australia today and showers heavier downpours forming in the NT and some parts of SA. High pressure is currently parked over Tassie but will slowly drift eastwards towards NZ this weekend.

After the high has left - and before the next week moves eastwards - there will be a wintry, colder and windier south-west flow that will be most noticeable over Tasmania, Bass Strait and Victoria, but will also affect parts of SA, southern NSW and the A.C.T. For Tas in particular this means a prolonged spell of colder air, windier weather and heavy west coast rain and showers, while some snow is also possible at higher elevation areas around Tas and Vic.

The westerly change will eventually replace the showery south to south-east flow in coastal NSW - so drier weather is coming back with sunnier skies.

Apart from scattered/isolated showers around parts of Australia there are large dry skies in the forecast.

Description: Rain continues today along the eastern South Island and lower North Island, coming in from the east with heavy falls. Over the next 48 hours this rain shifts further up the eastern North Island (into Hawke's Bay) and eases in the lower South Island (eventually easing around Kaikōura).

As the rain moves northwards a colder southerly comes in behind it - bringing gales into Wellington and strong to brisk southerly quarter winds into other parts of NZ as we go into the end of the week.

This weekend high pressure grows - so expect a cold and frosty start for the South Island on Matariki Friday, then lighter winds move over the North Island for the weekend.

Description: We have plenty of showers in the forecast, pretty much affecting all states and territories over the coming week - although some places have very low rainfall. There will be a few heavier falls here and there with isolated thunderstorms.

Eastern coastal areas have showers in the mix across the week while inland areas are much more hit and miss - with some large dry zones in the mix too.

Description: Low pressure will cross the upper North Island in the days ahead and that set-up actually pushes more heavy rain into the eastern South Island then moves into the eastern North Island.

Driest weather will be in Westland and Fiordland.

We track where the heaviest rain will be (North Canterbury to Marlborough) where slips and flooding are possible over the next 48 hours. Some of this heavy rain may also brush Wairarapa and and the eastern North Island.

As we go through the week the polar boundary slides further northwards bringing colder air - but there will be some large sunny areas in the mix too.

Description: Generally speaking rainfall is lowering across the nation following some widespread wet weather this week, but showers are going to return to the eastern coastline of Australia next week as a colder south-easterly flow comes through - with polar air out in the Tasman Sea it means the Tasman islands and the eastern side of the country will be cooler.

High pressure is growing south of WA and that will drift towards Tas in the coming week.

This weekend there will be widespread showers and thunderstorms in central/southern parts of NT and even a few showers for the Top End.

We track Australia's weather for the next several days, including where snow might fall today and tonight.

Description: A colder change is coming - and so too is a large low which will develop and grow over northern NZ this weekend and through next week. The combination of a large northern low and a southern polar change means heavy rain will turn to heavy snow in some areas - but not for all. Generally speaking the very south of the South Island will have colder, drier, air overall - so even though snow flurries may go down to low levels they may not add up to much. Further north into Canterbury and Marlborough snow may be heavier - but the totals and how low down it goes keeps changing (due to the forecasts of the specific size and placement of the northern low changing slightly each day - which has a big consequence further southwards for the precise placement of rain vs snow and where that will lie).

Description: Low pressure areas south of SA and around Tas are today bringing more thunderstorms and downpours from SA to Vic and into Tas, with dry spells.

Over the coming days low pressure moves off to NZ and high pressure comes in behind it - but the southern placement of these highs means more east to south-east winds for many parts of Australia, especially the eastern coastline next week with more showers and colder winds for coastal NSW.

There's likely to be a thundery burst of weather through the southern half of the NT and despite isolated hit and miss downpours and showers around some parts of WA and SA there should be increasing dry weather for many, although from Bunbury to Albany in WA another burst of wet weather is expected next week.

Finally, we take a look at the Northern Hemisphere with a typhoon that is forecast to develop - while this doesn't affect Australia in any way, long range modelling is today showing it having air pressure down to 87...

Description: A cold front is moving into NZ from Friday to Sunday with low pressure developing west of NZ and then tracking over the upper North Island going into next week. This low may become quite large, and while large doesn't always mean stormy it does push subtropical fuelled moisture into some regions - and when that mixes with polar air it can create heavy snow in a narrow area and wintry weather conditions.

At this stage heavy rain risks affect a number of regions, but the lower North Island (like Wairarapa) might be exposed to some of this rain, along with Marlborough and Canterbury.

The West Coast will get the heavy rain first - and some thunderstorms - to start with over the next couple of days.

Description: El Niño is officially here and still getting stronger in the months ahead, but it's harder to notice its effects in New Zealand and Australia at this time of the year. The concern will be going into spring and summer, as El Niño has historically increased the chances of some regions having much lower rainfall, and it can also add more oomph to the heat in the hotter months, and that can lead to bushfires and drought. But our part of the world is a distance from where El Niño is measured, and we have other climate drivers that affect our weather (like what happens over the Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean and Tasman Sea).

We're seeing thresholds rising above where El Niño is being measured - we talk about how it is measured and why sea surface temperatures (SSTs) play a role - and how warmer than usual SSTs over the Tasman Sea may be a positive if you need rain.

Description: Thunderstorms in SA this morning will spread further into NSW today and wet weather will also spread over parts of Vic, Tas and the A.C.T. Behind this is a change to windy westerlies - up to gale force in exposed places - which is likely to affect southern parts of SA, Vic, the A.C.T, Tas and the south-east corner and eastern side of NSW over Thursday and/or Friday.

Temperatures drop behind the westerlies as they turn more south-west, bringing snow above a few hundred metres to Tas and also possible around the Victorian Alps.

Showers continue around southern and western parts of WA - with more on the way, although a bubble of high pressure will dry things out for a time,

Description: Many regions have settled weather at the moment with frosts as far north as Auckland this morning, but still some showers in eastern Northland and from about Mahia Peninsula to East Cape. Those showers will continue to ease further over the next couple of days.

In the South Island the frosts will become less noticeable in the coming days as a warmer north to north-west flow develops, ahead of heavy West Coast rain later on Friday and into Saturday. Snow will likely develop on the ranges and lower to a few hundred metres (maybe lower) going into Sunday and next week.

The cold front moves into the North Island on Sunday and Monday then low pressure is expected to stall around the North Island going into next week. This may drag down subtropical rain for eastern NZ (today's update shows it affecting Canterbury - but this may change) and where that rain meets polar air there may be pockets of heavy snow around the mountains of Canterbury and Marlborough.

Description: The nights and mornings ahead will be colder in a number of regions - but an even colder change is coming this Sunday and next Monday as a polar airflow moves in, and may linger for most of next week.

More rain will move into NZ from the west, bringing heavy West Coast rain by Friday/Saturday, then some of that rain and showery weather moves over the North Island by Sunday and/or Monday of next week.

The polar change moves over the South Island on Sunday, then over the North Island by Monday.

Snow may fall as low as 200m (or potentially 100m for a time) in parts of the lower South Island early next week. Not locked in yet.

Description: High pressure lies south of NZ today and that placement encourages a colder south-east wind into the North Island bringing areas of rain and showers. Some of these showers also affect the eastern side of the South Island, although drier weather is moving in there.

This week high pressure moves over the country bringing lighter winds, clearer skies and colder nights - increasing the chances of frosts over the country.

But a warmer nor'wester kicks in this Friday and Saturday and may reach severe gale in some locations, along with heavy West Coast rain which will spillover a little into the east and will brush parts of the lower North Island from Mt Taranaki to Horowhenua/Wellington.

A wintry change moves up the South Island on Sunday turning rain to snow in the mountains and ranges.

Description: A cold front with strengthening winds is moving into WA from the south-west and will bring a colder change this weekend, which will move into SA next week.

Showers elsewhere today are mostly along the eastern coastal side of Australia, but a few wet weather areas are forming in western NSW. Over the coming week more downpours (hit and miss) will form inland for southern Qld and inland parts of NSW - surrounded by either dry zones, or limited rainfall. This wet weather may end up pushing up the totals as it moves southwards into the Victorian Alps on the northern side, and the southern ranges and mountains of NSW. Coastal showers continue in Qld and NSW but should ease next week once nor'westers develop.

The developing northerly flow next week (ahead of the cold front reaching SA) will also push wet weather into northern Tas.

Description: Damaging wind gusts and heavy rain will continue to affect some parts of the North Island and brushing Marlborough today as a low remains just to the north of the country. Coupled with incoming high pressure further south it's encouraging a very strong southerly wind through Wellington, Cook Strait, Whanganui and over Taranaki, with parts of Auckland and Northland also affected.

This weekend the low moves east/north east of NZ and will bring further rain and showers to the eastern North Island from East Cape to Wairarapa, and should clear from coastal Marlborough.

Description: The chance of wet weather increases through inland parts of NSW and Qld going through this weekend and into next week. While we do see some heavier falls there will still be large dry areas and it's too far out to lock in yet - but we show you the maps and compare 7 day rainfall modelling to give you a stronger understanding of what may (or may not) happen where you live.

Eastern/coastal NSW and Qld has showers and patches of rain around for a few more days yet, caught up in a south-easterly flow out of the Tasman and Coral Seas. There are large dry areas in many other states and territories thanks to high pressure in the south-east.

Description: Low pressure continues to slowly move across the upper North Island and for some that will bring the sun out, for others it will bring rain or showers. The instability caused by low pressure could produce some pockets of heavy rain - but our mountains and ranges will also break some of that up.

Meanwhile the polar southerly in the South Island will today and tonight move into the lower half of the North Island before easing going into Friday. This will bring snow into the ranges and mountains of the lower and central North Island.

There's also some heavy rain in the north-east of the South Island around North Canterbury and southern Marlborough over the next day or so.

A few showers and spits of rain are about the nation today - but there are large dry areas thanks to a heap of high pressure just south of the continent. Over the coming days the high moves more eastwards, but may stall for a time over Tassie - but it will eventually move off to NZ by late weekend or early next week.

A stormy low will push into south-western WA on Friday and going into Saturday and Sunday weakens to some degree. Colder weather, strong winds (with marine gales) and squally showers with thunderstorms will all be possible in WA's south-west around Friday and/or Saturday.

Description: For the next few days low pressure will crawl over the upper North Island, driving in rain as far south as the South Island, which will then mix with a polar airflow to bring snow on the mountains, ranges and hilltops of the South Island, and some wet weather into the upper South Island.

There are pockets of slow moving heavy rain - and that coupled with NZ's mountains and ranges means that rainfall totals in your forecast may well change each day this week. We show you the latest on the expected areas of rain, snow and who gets the cold change - and when.
