- Next week has the chance of windier westerlies kicking in across Tas, parts of Vic, southern/eastern NSW and around the A.C.T - but many other parts of Australia have lighter winds and mainly dry weather.
Showers continue in some eastern/coastal parts of NSW and Qld, but the majority of downpours will be through WA's interior and the West Coast of Tasmania.

- Low pressure is leaving the South Island today but another low will brush the upper North Island on Saturday bringing rain with some isolated heavier falls, before clearing away on Sunday.
Sunday will becoming windier with westerly quarter winds ramping up, rising to gale in some exposed parts of NZ, with those winds intensifying on Monday and likely again on Wednesday. Damaging gusts are possible in both main islands - we highlight where and when this will be most likely.
A warmer airflow is moving over parts of the South Island today and Saturday, while the North Island remains milder thanks to a subtropical flow for now - but by Sunday and Monday colder air again moves over NZ, especially the South Island on Sunday and/or Monday.
Next week temperature do lift again, but spring's wild westerlies will be the main feature of NZ's weather next week, along with more heavy West Coast rain.

- A surge of windier westerlies is coming in next week and will produce gales around Tasmania and Bass Strait, maybe coastal Vic, with gusty winds also affecting areas closer to the mountains and the Great Dividing Range going into eastern Vic and south-eastern NSW.
At the moment high pressure covers SA, NSW, the A.C.T and Vic with lighter winds, while low pressure is over southern WA - and that low will fall apart today and going into Friday, but will leave behind some showers and downpours for southern WA going into the weekend.
We're also seeing brief bursts of more tropical heat through the tropical north of WA, NT and Qld.

- The final weekend of winter on the meteorological calendar will bring spring-like westerlies across the nation, ramping up further on Sunday and easing gradually on Monday, but may return again next Wednesday.
The windy westerlies will boost temperatures following the current set-up over the South Island. Today and Friday more heavy rain and snow falls over the South Island with a lot of single digit maximum temperatures. By Saturday some eastern South Island places may shoot up into the 20s.
The North Island, which isn't affected by the current cold air over the South Island, has cloud and showers about going into the weekend - and maybe some locally heavy rain in the upper North Island due to some northern offshore low pressure.
Next week the westerly winds dominate the beginning of spring.

Behind it is high pressure (currently over SA) and that will drift into NSW, Vic and the A.C.T bringing lighter winds and much drier weather - but it begins with a cooler southerly flow that goes up into Qld.
Some weak low pressure is developing for a time over the southern half of WA and will bring heavy rain between Perth and Bunbury, then along the southern coastline - but also inland too. It falls apart before properly moving into SA.
Tropical heat expands over Cape York Peninsula, then slides westwards over the top third of the NT and into the Kimberley while the polar boundary comes in close to WA next week, and brushes over parts of Tas bringing colder air. Small signs of the changing seasons.

Heavy rain spills over eastwards with some heavy falls making it to the Canterbury Plains and into Otago. - Low pressure is today moving into NSW and Vic bringing widespread areas of light to moderate rain and pockets of heavy downpours. The downpours/thunderstorms stretch as far north as the NT and Qld down to SA and Vic. Heaviest rain today is in the mountains and north of them in Vic, and around southern NSW (west of the Great Dividing Range) and around the A.C.T (also mostly to the west).
The wet weather clears eastern and south-eastern parts of Australia going into Wednesday and Thursday as high pressure moves quickly in to SA then Vic & NSW. But behind this high is the next developing low for southern WA and this may produce some heavy slow moving rain/downpours, especially between Perth and Bunbury on the western side and between Albany and Esperance on the southern side. There is a fine line between what could be heavy rain or heavy snow for alpine and higher elevation parts of Canterbury in particular, but also Otago, so keep an eye on your local WeatherWatch.co.nz or RuralWeather.co.nz forecasts, along with MetService warnings and watches, as it won't take much for heavy rain to fall as heavy snow, or vice versa. - Low pressure is today over South Australia driving widespread moderate rain across large parts of the state, and linking up to thunderstorms/downpours tracking through the southern half of NT.
The low will spread into NSW and Vic going into Tuesday with more widespread rain with heavy falls, especially in Vic, but extending from SA into NSW and even Qld.
By Wednesday the low exits Australia and heads to NZ as a significant rain event, but behind it will be high pressure bringing lighter winds and drier skies to those areas affected by the low today and Tuesday.

- A low exiting Australia this week will bring some significant West Coast rain, with spillover into the east and south affecting Southland, Otago and Canterbury - and maybe even Nelson/Tasman and Marlborough to some degree.
The North Island does get clipped by this wet weather too, mostly in the west of the island - and there remains some uncertainty about wet weather chances in the upper North Island this Saturday (we show you the latest due to a possible area of subtropical low pressure).
From a wind point of view we're not done with the windy weather yet - but it won't be as intense as it was yesterday/Sunday. West to NW winds pick up further this afternoon and tonight around the South Island and lower North Island. Winds will be mild in temperature for many though, with subtropical connections for a time in a number of regions this week.

- A large but fairly weak low pressure zone is today moving out of WA and into SA, dragging with it thunderstorms and a temperature drop. Ahead of it northerlies blow with mostly dry weather.
The low will track over SA on Monday and that placement near the coastline gives it a little more energy as it continues to move eastwards into NSW and Vic going into Tuesday. This increases the chances of rain with heavy falls, especially in SA from Ceduna to Adelaide, and again around Vic (near the Alps) and southern NSW near the Vic border. Some of the downpours will be a bit hit and miss, but we try to give you as much precision as we can now that the low has formed.
Thunderstorms/downpours will also affect the southern half of the NT and the southern third of Qld as well.

- We have a big change in airflow with the freezing southerlies of the past couple of weeks finally fading and a windier westerly kicking in this weekend, boosting temperatures for a time (especially in the east of both islands) ahead of a colder Sunday for the South Island.
Winds may reach severe gale over the South Island and into the southern and eastern North Island overnight Saturday and into Sunday. Westerlies continue on into next week too, especially for the South Island and around Cook Strait.

- We're finally seeing a spring weather pattern emerging, which is defined by an uptick in westerly winds, stronger winds, and brief lifts in temperatures. But there's a catch. As you know we've had a "classic winter" these past several weeks, bringing normal to below normal temperatures and the polar boundary frequently launching itself north of the country - dredging up colder southerlies. We see no immediate end in sight to this, meaning as we drift closer to a spring weather pattern it may be a "classic spring" with wintry snaps continuing. This hasn't always been the case in spring over the past several years, especially in northern NZ.

- We have two things going on over the next few days ahead. 1) A large but fairly weak low will develop and track eastwards just north of NZ. 2) A polar southerly moving up the country over the weekend and into early next week.

- There are three main features to Australia's weather today - 1) The stormy low exiting the south-east, 2) a cold front zipping along WA's southern coastline and towards SA, 3) an enormous high pressure zone moving in from the southern Indian Ocean.
As the stormy low departs today it will leave cloud and westerlies in it's wake, followed by the active cold front moving into SA today. That front will continue tracking eastwards and will fall apart in the south-east, bringing showers across SA, Vic, NSW and Tas.
Going into the weekend it's all about powerful/large high pressure around SA, Vic and Tas. - Another burst of polar air is heading towards New Zealand, starting this weekend in the South Island and spreading over the North Island on Sunday/Monday of next week. Compared to the cold blast we had last week, this one is weaker - but it will deliver another wintry southerly, especially along the eastern side of New Zealand with another dusting of snow for the hills and ranges. This southerly doesn't look to come with a lot of moisture.
Before the southerly goes nationwide the north of the country will have a low moving through - this has the potential to deliver some heavy rain around East Cape, Gisborne and northern Hawke's Bay, but the weakness of the low makes it a little tricky to lock in this heavier rain just yet. - NZ is in between weather systems this week, generating different wind flows on different days and driving in a few showers. Frosts are still possible but they are mostly at the start of this week and mainly through the South Island's interior and around the Central Plateau.
Northerly quarter winds again kick in this week for a time, with a potential switch to a colder southerly around Sunday - although modelling is not yet locked in for this.

- Two significant wintry blasts are coming for the southern half of Australia, especially affecting southern WA, SA, Vic, the A.C.T, NSW and Tas over the weekend and again next week. These pulses of polar air are coupled with gale force winds that will become severe gale for a time in a number of places increases the chance of wind related damage and power outages. We have special wind maps to drill down deeper. (Keep up to date with Bureau of Meteorology official severe weather warnings).
Rainfall will exceed 100mm in parts of Victoria and southern NSW around the mountains, but those right on the eastern coastline will get the wind but with significantly reduced rainfall.

- Temperatures will start to lift this weekend both by day and by night in most (but not all) regions. We track the various wind directions, but generally speaking we have more northerly quarter winds over the country starting this weekend and continuing next week.
A low that is developing in the Tasman Sea will cross the South Island this week - bringing a brief return to southerly winds for the eastern coastline going into the start of next week, but nothing compared to the southerly we just had.

- It's not everyday we talk about the chances of snow in WA and SA but as the polar boundary races in this weekend - and again next week - it brings the chance of snow to the highest peaks in southern WA and the highest peaks in the southern half of SA, before falling in the usual places through the mountains, hills and ranges of Vic, southern NSW, the A.C.T and Tas. Certainly good news for the skifields and those that love winter cold.
These wintry surges bring gales - potentially damaging - from the west for a time from the western coastal side of southern WA through to the entire eastern side of NSW, with two significant surges of wind.
With the polar air also comes rain and heavy showers, some with hail, and biting wind chill - especially important to know for livestock and any early newborn lambs in particular, and especially when coupled with wet weather which can be tough for some animals.

- We have another update on Typhoon Dolphin as it tracks due west, with the storm expected to cross the capital of Naha, on Okinawa Island, on Friday - and will affect Japan's Ryukyu island group as early as tonight through to the end of Friday.
Dolphin has weakened and is no longer a Super Typhoon, but it is still packing wind gusts of 185km/h along with 12 metre waves and 300mm+ of rain.
Dolphin will move into China's east over the weekend, where it will turn from a wind event to a rain event with the chance of widespread flooding and landslides.
Taiwan is on the southern outer edges of the typhoon, but may still be clipped by some heavy rain for a time.

- Big frosts this morning and more heavy frosts are expected tonight, but a shift in windflow this weekend will see more northerly quarter winds developing, and next week more westerlies kicking in.
There is expected to be some weekend rain and showers - although still some large dry areas around NZ - we track where this wet weather will most likely be. Heavy rain is possible in the north-west corner of the South Island, the West Coast and up to Mt Taranaki.
Next week eastern NZ looks driest and sunniest as those westerlies arrive - bringing more rain to the West Coast and showers for the western North Island. There will also be a lift in overnight temperatures from this weekend into next week for many regions, hopefully helping ease those power bills for you!

- A large scale windy burst of more wintry weather is building south of Australia and will rush across the nation from west to east starting this weekend and continuing into next week - followed by a second burst next week, again going from WA to NSW.

- Heavier frosts are coming for parts of the country tonight and again tomorrow night as high pressure crosses NZ bringing light winds, clearer skies, and locking in the cold that has just spread over us.
However, by Friday, this weekend and kicking off next week, that same high will lie north-east of NZ and will start to drag down a milder northerly with connections to Tonga and Fiji. This will see frosts reduce and temperatures lift up.
There is also the chance of western and northern wet weather from Friday to Monday - it's still not locked in as to how much will fall, so we'll focus on that more in our Thursday and Friday video updates.

- A wintry outbreak has seen snow in Dunedin and some in Christchurch this morning with snow flurries and colder southerlies spreading into the southern and eastern North Island this afternoon, with snow most likely above 200 or 300 metres, but some sleety rain/snow mixes may go lower for a time.
The polar boundary, measuring the coldest of the southerly airflow, spreads northwards today, reaching Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula by mid afternoon and Northland by this evening. It may not bring a lot of wet weather, for some none at all, but it will bring a drop in temperatures.
This kicks off a few cold days around NZ with heavy frosts at night thanks to high pressure moving in. This high will ensure light winds and clearer skies in many regions going into Wednesday and/or Thursday.

- El Niño continues to intensify and will do so right through to the end of our spring in NZ and Australia. For now it hasn't disrupted our weather too much, although it is harder to measure it in winter in our part of the world due to the usual chaotic wintry weather from south of our nations. With El Niño we'll be looking for more high pressure stuck in the Tasman Sea going into spring as historically El Niño has done this, bringing dry weather to Australia and more westerlies into NZ during our spring and summer months - and that can reduce rainfall inland and to the east of both countries.
We are seeing an uptick in high pressure which may be more noticeable this month, but still enough variety to bring in occasional wet weather to most, but not all, regions.
For large parts of Australia dry weather looks to increase over the coming few weeks, while in New Zealand it's a messier pattern with more showers.

- The subantarctic airflow spreads over NZ today/tonight and into Saturday, dropping temperatures nationwide. Snow flurries are possible today to lower levels around Southland and Otago (above 200 or 300m).
As we go into the weekend many regions have dry or mainly dry weather as high pressure builds. This high pressure zone will cover NZ early to mid next week, locking in the cold air and bringing heavy frosts to the South Island and even parts of the North Island. Frosts will likely go north of Auckland for a time.
But next week some areas may get the northerlies returning - ahead of a low pressure zone in the Tasman Sea. It's not clear yet how this low will impact NZ but it's likely to bring a change to milder air for a time, especially in the north of NZ.

- The most powerful storm on the planet at the moment rapidly intensified over the past 36 hours, going from the equivalent of a Category 1 hurricane, to that of a Category 5 storm (the most powerful).
For now Super Typhoon Dolphin remains at sea and will strengthen further over the next two days.
Next week it continues to track West to North-West and will likely cross Japan's islands well south of Tokyo and closer to Taiwan. Both Taiwan and China will likely be directly hit by the large typhoon over a week from now.
We show the intensity and tracking of this typhoon in this special update. We may well have another update next week as it moves closer to land.

- It will be a cold again tonight in the south-east and central parts of Australia following the polar snap around Vic and Tas. The A.C.T, NSW and even southern Qld and the southern half of the NT will feel the colder air, as will SA - where high pressure is building.
High pressure will track east bring more cold nights/mornings and frost risks through the weekend, while temperatures lift for a time in WA.
Next week showers increase for coastal Qld - still some large dry areas (especially inland) and this will also clip NSW for a time. There are also two lows to track next week, one moving into WA bringing showers from Exmouth southwards, and the other low will cross Tasmania bringing wintry weather back to Vic, southern NSW, Tas and the A.C.T - and yes, more snow for the skifields.

- A polar change (another one!) arrives on Friday for the South Island and goes nationwide on Saturday, leaving NZ under a cold southerly flow through to the middle of next week. Temperatures will drop nationwide over the next 48 hours as this moves through.
Snow will fall below 400m with the possibility of it lower to 100m briefly (unlikely to add up to much below 200m). Snowfall in NZ's coastal areas can be tricky due to the relatively mild ocean around us in comparison to the polar airflow moving in.
Snow will likely affect some highways in the South Island and the Central Plateau in the North Island.
Following this cold snap frosts and black ice will become the next feature going into next week - with more cold southerlies, as high pressure slowly builds.
There is also a low pressure zone in the Tasman Sea by mid-next week - it's unclear yet how it will affect NZ.
